    Automatic lighting design

A significant problem in the automatic design of 3D graphics is the configuration of the lighting for a scene. The number of lights included, and the properties of these lights, has an enormous impact on what a viewer can judge about the content (the objects), properties (the geometric characteristics and spatial relations of the objects) and other aesthetic qualities of a scene. The traditional approach to lighting design for image synthesis is based on manual design methods, whereby users interactively specify values of lighting parameters, render the scene, and modify the lighting parameters until the desired visual properties of the scene are achieved. Non-expert users encounter a number of difficulties in selecting the appropriate lighting parameters, as the process requires both a subtle technical and aesthetic understanding of lighting in computer graphics. In this thesis, perceptual aspects such as contrast and the non-linear characteristics of our perceptual response to colour are combined with practical studio lighting techniques and a novel treatment of shadows, to yield an extension to existing perceptual approaches to lighting design. This so-called ideal lighting approach optimises the lighting configuration for a scene with respect to a set of absolute perceptual metrics. An intuitive approach to lighting design, lighting-by-example, is also proposed and extensively explored in forms that exploit both the perception-based lighting framework and a new wavelet formulation. User studies are conducted both to configure the perception-based lighting objective function and to evaluate the performance of the proposed lighting design approaches. Finally, we develop an interactive interface for the lighting design process that incorporates both the ideal lighting and lighting-by-example approaches.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

The idea to write the thesis about television production came into my mind a long time ago. I knew that this area of media technology was the most interesting for me. I had an internship in Aito Media Oy television production company in 2009, and I studied TV Production at Ferris State University, USA for one academic year 2010-2011. The main objective for my thesis is to research, compare and describe all steps in production of a television show from the developing an idea through planning, budgeting, shooting and editing to the final release of the TV show on the screen. Also I would like to observe the technologies used nowadays and determine the role of a producer in the TV production. To reach my objective, I read several books and electronical materials on different topics about phases of the production, equipment and techniques, communication and documentation. Furthermore, I use knowledge from my own experience, which I got while studying and making practical tasks at Television and Digital Media Production program at Ferris State University. I learned the professional skills required in all aspects of different phases of television production, including studio workflow, camera operation, field equipment, multicamera directing and the responsibilities and organ-izational expertise of the producer. At the same time, I explored the latest production techniques and technology, such as audio and lighting work-stations, non-linear editing, high-definition television and 3D television.Ajatus tehdä opinnäytetyöni televisiotuotannosta tuli jo kauan sitten, koska tiesin, että se on henkilökohtaisesti mielenkiintoisin alue mediatekniikassa. Olin työharjoittelussa Aito Media Oy tv-tuotantoyhtiössä vuonna 2009, ja lukuvuodessa 2010-2011 opiskelin Ferris State University:n TV-tuotanto ja Digimedian koulutusohjelmassa, Yhdysvaltoissa. Työn päätavoitteena on tutkia, vertailla ja kuvata kaikki tv-ohjelman tuotannon vaiheet alkaen idean kehittämisestä, sekä suunnittelun, budjetoinnin, kuvausten ja editoinnin kautta lopullisen tv-ohjelman version julkaistamiseen. Myöskin haluan havainnoida nykyaikaisia tekniikoita ja määrittää tuottajan roolin tv-tuotannossa. Tavoiteeni saavuttakseni olen lukenut useita kirjoja ja elektronisia lähteitä erilaisilla aiheilla, kuten tv tuotannon vaiheet, laitteisto ja tekniikat, viestintä ja dokumentointi. Lisäksi käytän tietoja omasta kokemuksestani, mitkä sain kun opiskelin Ferris State University:ssa ja tein erilaisia tv tuotannon liittyviä tehtäviä. Olen oppinut tarvittavaa ammattitaitoa kaikilla tv-tuotannon vaiheilla, kuten työnkulku studiossa, cameran operointi, tuotantolaitteiden käyttö kentällä, monicameroiden ohjaus sekä tuottajan vastuut ja järjestelytaidot. Samalla tutkin viimeisimpiä tuotantomenetelmiä ja tekniikkaa, kuten ääni- ja valaistustyöasemien käyttöä, käytössä olevia editointiohjelmistoja ja teräväpiirtotelevision ja 3D television ominaisuuksia

    Herr Lubitsch Goes to Hollywood

Ernst Lubitsch, the German film director who left Berlin for Hollywood in 1923, is best remembered for the famous "Lubitsch touch" in such masterpieces as Trouble in Paradise and Ninotchka, featuring Greta Garbo. Kristin Thompson's study focuses on Lubitsch's silent films from the years between 1918 and 1927, tracing the impact this director had on consolidating classical Hollywood filmmaking. She gives a new assessment of the stylistic two-way traffic between the American and the German film industries, after World War I each other's strongest rival in Europe. By 1919, Lubitsch had emerged as the finest proponent of the German studio style: sophisticated, urbane and thoroughly professionalized. He was quick to absorb 'American' innovations and stylistic traits, becoming the unique master of both systems and contributing to the golden ages of the American as well as the German cinema. Utilizing Lubitsch's silent films as a key to two great national cinemas, Thompson's meticulously illustrated and extensively researched book goes beyond an authorial study and breaks new ground in cinema history.

The System Paradigm Revisited. Clarification and Additions in the Light of Experiences in the Post-Socialist Region

    Get PDF
Abstract The term paradigm was introduced to the philosophy of science by Thomas Kuhn – he used this term to denote the specific approach applied by a school of reasearch to examine its subject matter. Researchers using the same paradigm seek answers to similar questions, and employ similar methods and concepts. In an article published in 2000, the author of this essay introduced the term system paradigm, which focuses on the systems functioning in a society. This study develops the theoretical considerations outlined in that earlier article on the basis of experience on post-socialist transition. The first part compares the socialist and capitalist systems, describing their main characteristics, and concludes that the capitalist system has become established in former socialist countries, except for North Korea and Cuba. The second part analyzes varieties of capitalism within a typology which classifies prevailing forms of politics and government. Three markedly different types are identified: democracy, autocracy, and dictatorship. Huntington wrote about the “third wave” of democratization. This study concludes the third wave has dried up: for the 47 post-socialist countries, only a tenth of the population live in democracy, while autocracy or dictatorship prevails in all other countries in this group. The third part of this essay applies the conceptual and analytical apparatus to Hungary, where capitalism exists, and autocracy is the prevailing politico-governmental form – here we can find important characteristics common to other capitalist countries or other autocracies. This finding is compatible with the observation that there are some, less fundamental, characteristics unique to Hungary, or “Hungarica”, which differ from the characteristics of all other countries

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to prepare a written script suitable for use in choreography classes on the college level. The script identified, analyzed, and clarified the current non-objective choreographic approaches of three contemporary dance artists. The three selected non-objective choreographic approaches were multimedia by Alwin Nikolais, chance/indeterminacy by Merce Cunningham, and computer by Jeanne Beaman. The script was organized to provide a flexible supplement and guide for viewing the selected films pertaining to the non-objective choreographic approaches of these choreographers. The three available 16 millimeter films selected for analysis in the scripts were FUSION by Alwin Nikolais, RAINFOREST by Merce Cunningham, and STATIONARY DANCE by Jeanne Beaman
