Exploring Which Agile Principles Students Internalize When Using a Kanban Process Methodology

    Get PDF
This paper reports on a case study of the Agile Kanban project methodology, which while growing in popularity, has had far less analysis on its usefulness in the classroom as compared to other frameworks such as Agile Scrum. Our study provides insight into why the Kanban methodology is useful by mapping student comments about the methodology to the twelve principles laid down in the Agile Manifesto. Our analysis identified two key agile principles that help to explain the value of Kanban. Specifically, we found that the students focused on self-organizing teams and reflection at regular intervals, and that these two principles led to improved team communication and coordination. Our findings are useful for those looking to use or define a process management methodology for student teams as well as others exploring the more general challenge of incorporating agile into the classroom

Scrum methodology in context-based secondary chemistry classes: effects on students’ achievement and on students’ perceptions of affective and metacognitive dimensions of their learning

Teaching with Scrum methodology includes ceremonies, roles and artefacts supporting students in planning, monitoring and directing their learning process. It scafolds students’ learning in complex and sometimes overwhelming context-based learning environments. Efects of the implementation on both students’ learning outcomes and self-reported perceptions of six afective and metacognitive outcomes were investigated. Six teachers implemented Scrum methodology in a context-based secondary chemistry module on Green Chemistry. Their classes formed the experimental group. Based on how students experienced the quality of the implementation, teachers of the experimental group were subdivided into top-teachers and growth-teachers. Consequently, their students formed two sub-experimental groups. The comparison group, which did not use Scrum methodology, consisted of students taught by four teachers. A pre-test post-test control group design was used to study its efect on students’ achievements and self-reported afective and metacognitive outcomes. Students of both experimental groups outperformed students of the comparison group with a large efect-size (top-teachers); and medium efect-size (growthteachers) on learning outcomes. Findings on students’ perceptions of afective and metacognitive outcomes revealed medium and small efects of Scrum methodology. Despite the fact that the implementation is challenging for teachers, it appears that Scrum methodology has positive efects on students’ achievement and on students’ perceptions of afective and metacognitive dimensions of their learning.NWO023.004.069Teaching and Teacher Learning (ICLON

Computer Science has been increasingly prevalent in K-12 education in recent decades. Most Americans believe that Computer Science is as important as other skills taught in school; further, parents are putting pressure on districts to offer Computer Science programs (1.1). To meet this demand, many teacher preparation programs are adding Computer Science Education to their offering of degrees. This thesis investigates Agile and Scrum product development as a potential method of Computer Science instruction, explores the standards relevant to a Computer Science teacher, and offers a prospectus for a new Graduate Level Methods class to prepare Computer Science teachers to utilize the Scrum framework in standards-based instruction at the K-12 level (1.3). To create the prospectus, research from peer-reviewed articles, case-studies, and implementation guides relating to the topics of Scrum and Computer Science standards are reviewed. The implementation, validity and importance of Scrum, and its educational variant eduScrum, are compared based on the roles, rituals, and artifacts utilized in each framework. The results justify eduScrum as a valid method for problem-based, constructivist Computer Science instruction (2.10-2.12). The background, validity, and importance of three sets of Computer Science standards (K-12 Computer Science Framework, NYSED, and ISTE) are explored (3.1-3.3). These standards were selected for their relevancy to Computer Science certification in New York State and the support of industry, professionals, and lawmakers. The results justify the inclusion of all three standards as crucial to curriculum in New York State (3.4). The thesis culminates in the creation of a prospectus for the Student Learning Objectives and structure of a Methods of Computer Science Instruction class at the Graduate level (4.1-4.4). The SLO’s are created utilizing Bloom’s taxonomy (4.1). The prospectus recommends Scrum in the creation of Learning Segments utilizing relevant standards, topics, concepts and research literature. The prospectus models Scrum at all levels and is a valid way to teach constructivist, problem-based learning (4.2). More research is needed on the effectiveness of Scrum with low performing students, the use of eduScrum at the K-12 level and the implementation of the prospectus as a class at SUNY/Buffalo State

Explosion welding is often used when conventional welding methods cannot provide welded joint of two dissimilar materials, but also when some specific geometry should be welded, or large surfaces of metal plates. The formation of a joint in explosive welding is based on the dynamic effect of the high pressure created by the explosion. For this purpose, most often some industrial explosives of low detonation parameters are used, and one of them is DEMEX, produced by TRAYAL, Serbia. In this research DEMEX was applied to weld plates of two different types of steel. Prior to the experimental procedure of welding, the selected metal plates, the explosive obtained from the producer was subjected to initial quality control: measurement of its bulk density and detonation velocity, using optical probes and a photodetector connected with an electronic counter. The experimental setup for welding was as follows: explosive DEMEX in powdery state was applied in a uniform layer over the upper plate, which was horizontally placed over the lower plate, in parallel position, with small wooden spacers, marginally placed between them. Activation was performed by an electro-detonating cap and a small booster of plastic explosive. The welded joint was examined using methods of ultrasonic defectoscopy, liquid penetrants testing and microstructural analysis of the welded joint. Cross-sectional microstructural analyses of the welded plates were performed using a stereo and optical microscope to analyze the weld zone
