    The SNS logistics network design : location and vehicle routing.

    Large-scale emergencies caused by earthquake, tornado, pandemic flu, terrorism attacks and so on can wreak havoc to communities. In order to mitigate the impact of the events, emergency stockpiles of food, water, medicine and other materials have been set up around the US to be delivered to the affected areas during relief operations. One type of stockpile is called the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS). The SNS logistics network is designed to have multiple stages of facilities, each of which is managed by different levels of governmental authorities - federal, state and local authorities. The design of a logistics network for delivery of the SNS materials within a state are explored in this dissertation. There are three major areas of focus in this dissertation: (1) the SNS facility location model, which is used to determine sites for locating Receiving, Staging and Storage (RSS) and Regional Distribution Nodes (RDNs) to form a logistics network to deliver relief material to Points of Demand (PODs), where the materials are directly delivered to the affected population; (2) the SNS Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), which is used to assist the SNS staff in determining the numbers of various types of trucks, and the routing schedules of each truck to develop an operational plan for delivering the required relief materials to the assigned PODs within the required duration; (3) the location-routing analysis of emergency scenarios, in which the facility location model and the VRP solution are integrated through the use of a computer program to run on several assumed emergency scenarios. Using real data from the department of public health in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, a transshipment and location model is formulated to determine the facility locations and the transshipment quantities of materials; a multiple-vehicle routing model allowing split deliveries and multiple routes per vehicle that must be completed within a required duration is formulated to determine the routing and scheduling of trucks. The facility location model is implemented using Microsoft Solver Foundation and C#. An algorithm combining the Clark and Wright saving algorithm and Simulated Annealing is designed and implemented in C# to solve the VRP. The algorithm can determine whether there is shortage of transportation capacity, and if so, how many of various types of trucks should be added for optimal performance. All the solution algorithms are integrated into a web-based SNS planning tool. In the location-routing analysis of emergency scenarios, a binary location model and an algorithm for solving VRP solution are integrated as a computer program to forecast the feasibility of distribution plans and the numbers of required trucks of various types. The model also compares the costs and benefits of direct and indirect shipment. A large-scale emergency scenario in which a specific type of vaccine is required to be delivered to the entire state of Kentucky is considered. The experiments are designed based on the real data provided by the Kentucky state government. Thus the experimental results provide valuable suggestions for future SNS preparedness planning

    Coverage & cooperation: Completing complex tasks as quickly as possible using teams of robots

    As the robotics industry grows and robots enter our homes and public spaces, they are increasingly expected to work in cooperation with each other. My thesis focuses on multirobot planning, specifically in the context of coverage robots, such as robotic lawnmowers and vacuum cleaners. Two problems unique to multirobot teams are task allocation and search. I present a task allocation algorithm which balances the workload amongst all robots in the team with the objective of minimizing the overall mission time. I also present a search algorithm which robots can use to find lost teammates. It uses a probabilistic belief of a target robot’s position to create a planning tree and then searches by following the best path in the tree. For robust multirobot coverage, I use both the task allocation and search algorithms. First the coverage region is divided into a set of small coverage tasks which minimize the number of turns the robots will need to take. These tasks are then allocated to individual robots. During the mission, robots replan with nearby robots to rebalance the workload and, once a robot has finished its tasks, it searches for teammates to help them finish their tasks faster

    Intelligent deployment strategies for passive underwater sensor networks

    Passive underwater sensor networks are often used to monitor a general area of the ocean, a port or military installation, or to detect underwater vehicles near a high value unit at sea, such as a fuel ship or aircraft carrier. Deploying an underwater sensor network across a large area of interest (AOI), for military surveillance purposes, is a significant challenge due to the inherent difficulties posed by the underwater channel in terms of sensing and communications between sensors. Moreover, monetary constraints, arising from the high cost of these sensors and their deployment, limit the number of available sensors. As a result, sensor deployment must be done as efficiently as possible. The objective of this work is to develop a deployment strategy for passive underwater sensors in an area clearance scenario, where there is no apparent target for an adversary to gravitate towards, such as a ship or a port, while considering all factors pertinent to underwater sensor deployment. These factors include sensing range, communications range, monetary costs, link redundancy, range dependence, and probabilistic visitation. A complete treatment of the underwater sensor deployment problem is presented in this work from determining the purpose of the sensor field to physically deploying the sensors. Assuming a field designer is given a suboptimal number of sensors, they must be methodically allocated across an AOI. The Game Theory Field Design (GTFD) model, proposed in this work, is able to accomplish this task by evaluating the acoustic characteristics across the AOI and allocating sensors accordingly. Since GTFD considers only circular sensing coverage regions, an extension is proposed to consider irregularly shaped regions. Sensor deployment locations are planned using a proposed evolutionary approach, called the Underwater Sensor Deployment Evolutionary Algorithm, which utilizes two suitable network topologies, mesh and cluster. The effects of these topologies, and a sensor\u27s communications range, on the sensing capabilities of a sensor field, are also investigated. Lastly, the impact of deployment imprecision on the connectivity of an underwater sensor field, using a mesh topology, is analyzed, for cases where sensor locations after deployment do not exactly coincide with planned sensor locations

    An improved marine predators algorithm-tuned fractional-order PID controller for automatic voltage regulator system

    One of the most popular controllers for the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) in maintaining the voltage level of a synchronous generator is the fractional-order proportional–integral-derivative (FOPID) controller. Unfortunately, tuning the FOPID controller is challenging since there are five gains compared to the three gains of a conventional proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller. Therefore, this research work presents a variant of the marine predators algorithm (MPA) for tuning the FOPID controller of the AVR system. Here, two modifications are applied to the existing MPA: the hybridization between MPA and the safe experimentation dynamics algorithm (SEDA) in the updating mechanism to solve the local optima issue, and the introduction of a tunable step size adaptive coefficient (CF) to improve the searching capability. The effectiveness of the proposed method in tuning the FOPID controller of the AVR system was assessed in terms of the convergence curve of the objective function, the statistical analysis of the objective function, Wilcoxon’s rank test, the step response analysis, stability analyses, and robustness analyses where the AVR system was subjected to noise, disturbance, and parameter uncertainties. We have shown that our proposed controller has improved the AVR system’s transient response and also produced about two times better results for objective function compared with other recent metaheuristic optimization-tuned FOPID controllers

    Textile Fingerprinting for Dismount Analysis in the Visible, Near, and Shortwave Infrared Domain

    The ability to accurately and quickly locate an individual, or a dismount, is useful in a variety of situations and environments. A dismount\u27s characteristics such as their gender, height, weight, build, and ethnicity could be used as discriminating factors. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is widely used in efforts to identify materials based on their spectral signatures. More specifically, HSI has been used for skin and clothing classification and detection. The ability to detect textiles (clothing) provides a discriminating factor that can aid in a more comprehensive detection of dismounts. This thesis demonstrates the application of several feature selection methods (i.e., support vector machines with recursive feature reduction, fast correlation based filter) in highly dimensional data collected from a spectroradiometer. The classification of the data is accomplished with the selected features and artificial neural networks. A model for uniquely identifying (fingerprinting) textiles are designed, where color and composition are determined in order to fingerprint a specific textile. An artificial neural network is created based on the knowledge of the textile\u27s color and composition, providing a uniquely identifying fingerprinting of a textile. Results show 100% accuracy for color and composition classification, and 98% accuracy for the overall textile fingerprinting process

    Mining a Small Medical Data Set by Integrating the Decision Tree and t-test

    [[abstract]]Although several researchers have used statistical methods to prove that aspiration followed by the injection of 95% ethanol left in situ (retention) is an effective treatment for ovarian endometriomas, very few discuss the different conditions that could generate different recovery rates for the patients. Therefore, this study adopts the statistical method and decision tree techniques together to analyze the postoperative status of ovarian endometriosis patients under different conditions. Since our collected data set is small, containing only 212 records, we use all of these data as the training data. Therefore, instead of using a resultant tree to generate rules directly, we use the value of each node as a cut point to generate all possible rules from the tree first. Then, using t-test, we verify the rules to discover some useful description rules after all possible rules from the tree have been generated. Experimental results show that our approach can find some new interesting knowledge about recurrent ovarian endometriomas under different conditions.[[journaltype]]國外[[incitationindex]]EI[[booktype]]紙本[[countrycodes]]FI
