Image analysis for translating English multimodal texts into Greek : a multimodal semiotics approach to translation training in a Greek higher education context
This study explores the image analysis practices of undergraduate translation trainees in a Greek. university. The key research questions focused on the trainees' perception of the role of visual literacy in translation, the nature of their verbal and visual associations and activities effective for developing this role.
Visual literacy, semiotics, and translation theories provided the conceptual framework for this multimodal semiotics approach to translation training, which guided my examination of the way the trainees described semiotic resources, how they used verbal and visual elements of Cl. translation task, and the extent to which they focused on the visual. Expanding on the concept of mediation, I developed a 'verbo-visual' mediation model that included visual semiotic elements to provide a detailed description of the ways in which the trainees intervened in the translation process.
Through an action research study I gauged the extent to which the trainees had developed visual literacy skills. I planned a series of tasks centred on the translation of a multimodal text from English into Greek. I used direct and video observation of the students as they performed the tasks and afterwards evaluated their translations.
The main findings of my research reveal that the trainees found it difficult initially to consider all the semiotic elements of the data-text whilst simultaneously translating its verbal elements. However. by providing examples of potential verbal-visual interactions and reflecting on and modifying the tasks, I found that the trainees began to appreciate non-verbal elements as potential translational factors. I was thus able to demonstrate a raised level of awareness of the visual elements of multimodal texts to some extent for all trainees in this study.
The research suggests that customized image analysis, photo-elicitation and visualization techniques may play a part in the improvement of translation training in a multimodal semiotics translation environment

Abstract : Art reflects an accumulation of mental experiences through analysis, observation, exploration, and contemplation of the values of religion, culture, politic, tradition, natural beauty, and daily activities in our live. Phenomenon of an object does not automatically represents what it looks. To have an appropriate image of an aesthetic object, contemplation, and interpretation of the essence are required. The traditional Balinese woven product has inspired us to have ideas on philosophical values of life. Interrelated vertical and horizontal lines represents the Balinese life concept of āTri Hita Karanaā, meaning a balance between spiritual and material life. This represents a balanced relationship between humans and God, among humans, and between humans and natural environment. The heteroginity of social life keeps moving in space and time that horizontal conflict occur. There are different ideologies, races, languages, cultures, and interests. When understood with extreme fanatism and when individual or group interests supersede public interests, conflicts in social life will occur. Diversity should be understood as potential strength when it is managed wisely and harmoniously to have a mutual understanding, mutual respect and harmonious diversity. Diversity as a concept of life is manifested in a visual language of painting. The complexity of conceptual expression as the interpretation of the phenomena of life is then translated into personal symbols on media. The basic elements of visual arts such as lines, shapes, dots, colors, are processed in such an aesthetic way to have comprehensive. Art of artistict and aesthetic painting

Social-Semiotic Analysis of Chupa Chups Printed Advertisement
This research will emphasize the visual elements and layout of Chupa Chups ads in printed media that considered as a sign. Morrison (2007) explains that the basic components of printed media advertising can be called signs which consist of: headlines, advertisement agencies (text containing messages intended for ads readers, usually in the form of slogans or taglines), visual elements (brands, logos, color, photo, or illustrated image of the advertised product), and the layout used. This research is done by using qualitative approach by using social semiotics text analysis theory done by descriptive analysis on Chupa Chups printed advertisement. This ad is selected because it uses objects instead of human figures and interesting concept to representing it meaning. The analysis will describe all the marks on the ad while social semiotics focused on visual grammar. This research discusses 3 aspects of visual design meaning (Kress and Leeuwen, 2006) namely representational meaning, interactive meaning, and composition meaning. Found these 3 meanings are complementary in building the image of Chupa Chups product ads so that the purpose of the ad is well delivered to the readers.

K-Space at TRECVid 2007
In this paper we describe K-Space participation in
TRECVid 2007. K-Space participated in two tasks, high-level feature extraction and interactive search. We present our approaches for each of these activities and provide a brief analysis of our results. Our high-level feature submission utilized multi-modal low-level features which included visual, audio and temporal elements. Specific concept detectors (such as Face detectors) developed by K-Space partners were also used. We experimented with different machine learning approaches including logistic regression and support vector machines (SVM). Finally we also experimented with both early and late fusion for feature combination. This year we also participated in interactive search, submitting 6 runs. We developed two interfaces which both utilized the same retrieval functionality. Our objective was to measure the effect of context, which was supported to different degrees in each interface, on user performance.
The first of the two systems was a āshotā based interface,
where the results from a query were presented as a ranked
list of shots. The second interface was ābroadcastā based,
where results were presented as a ranked list of broadcasts.
Both systems made use of the outputs of our high-level feature submission as well as low-level visual features
User Experience Design of Web-Based BPKAD Asset Mapping using Kansei Engineering
User Experience (UX) is an integral part of software development, one of which is web-based mapping. Several factors that affect that UX is acceptable to users include visual aesthetics, ease of menu hierarchy, component layout and display coloring. There are several things that are not implied in UX development, namely the psychological factor of the user in which there is emotion and feeling. This research is located at BPKAD Palembang City which has purposing to 1) Analyzing user psychological factors in terms of feelings and emotions in designing web-based UX for the Palembang City BPKAD Regional Asset Mapping, 2) Interpreting user psychological factors into web-based design elements of the Palembang City BPKAD Regional Asset Mapping. The research stages include determining Kansei Word; Structuring SD Scale; Collecting and Validating Web-Based Mapping Specimen; Category and Item Design Classification; Participant Data Evaluation; Data Analysis and Defining Design Elements. The final result is 5 emotion concepts, these are dynamic & well-organized concept, refreshing concept, spacious concept, professional concept and nautical-look concept. The DEs generated from PLS analysis for dynamic & well-organized concepts are 27 DEs, refreshing concept is 15 DEs, spacious concept is 17 DEs, professional concept is 18 DEs and nautical-look concept is 18 DEs
Visual Infotainment in the political news: A cultural approach in the post-truth era
This article introduces the concept of visual infotainment, the aspects of infotainment found in visual artefacts employed in the news. Using a case study, we examine the photographs published in the digital media to report on the negotiations between the Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot communities, which took place in 2016 and 2017. A four-level visual framing analysis is used to identify a consistent set of frames. It aims to identify the political ideologies that appear to be behind the visual infotainment in these pictorial reports, and the specific ways in which hard news can be transformed into soft news. Our research confirms the presence of visual infotainment elements of personalisation, emotion, morbidity and sensationalism. Overall, the study shows that visual infotainment serves to establish visual frames produced by and for contradictory propagandas, one of which favours ethnic nationalism while the other promotes confl ict resolution
Personalised, de-ideologised and negative? A longitudinal analysis of campaign posters for German Bundestag elections, 1949-2017
Faced with fundamental societal changes such as partisan dealignment and mediatisation, political parties in Germany as well as in other Western democracies professionalise their communication. Drawing on the concept of professionalisation of political communication, the present study investigates changes of campaign posters for German Bundestag elections from 1949 until 2017 with regard to personalisation, de-ideologisation and negative campaigning. By using a quantitative content analysis of visual and textual elements of campaign posters (N = 1,857) and logistic regression analyses, we found an increase in visual personalisation and in visual ideologisation. However, no upwards trend was detected regarding negative campaigning across the four phases of political campaigning. Moreover, we found no empirical evidence for an increasing textual personalisation or textual de-ideologisation. All in all, the findings of this longitudinal analysis indicate an increasing visualisation of political communication
