The need for transmission and archive of mammograms and ultrasound Images has dramatically increased in tele-healthcare applications. Such images require large amount of' storage space which affect transmission speed. Therefore an effective compression scheme is essential. Compression of these images. in general. laces a great challenge to compromise between the higher compression ratio and the relevant diagnostic information. Out of the many studied compression schemes. lossless . IPl. (i- LS and lossy SPII IT are found to he the most efficient ones. JPEG-LS and SI'll IT are chosen based on a comprehensive experimental study carried on a large number of mammograms and ultrasound images of different sizes and texture. The lossless schemes are evaluated based on the compression ratio and compression speed. The distortion in the image quality which is introduced by lossy methods evaluated based on objective criteria using Mean Square Error (MSE) and Peak signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR). It is found that lossless compression can achieve a modest compression ratio 2: 1 - 4: 1. bossy compression schemes can achieve higher compression ratios than lossless ones but at the price of the image quality which may impede diagnostic conclusions. In this work, a new compression approach called Ilvbrid Region-based Image Compression Scheme (IIYRICS) has been proposed for the mammograms and ultrasound images to achieve higher compression ratios without compromising the diagnostic quality. In I LYRICS, a modification for JPI; G-LS is introduced to encode the arbitrary shaped disease affected regions. Then Shape adaptive SPIT IT is applied on the remaining non region of interest. The results clearly show that this hybrid strategy can yield high compression ratios with perfect reconstruction of diagnostic relevant regions, achieving high speed transmission and less storage requirement. For the sample images considered in our experiment, the compression ratio increases approximately ten times. However, this increase depends upon the size of the region of interest chosen. It is also föund that the pre-processing (contrast stretching) of region of interest improves compression ratios on mammograms but not on ultrasound images

Large size data requires more storage space, communication time, communication bandwidth and degrades host image quality when it is embedded into it as watermark. Lossless compression reduces data size better than lossless one but with permanent loss of important part of data. Data lossless compression reduces data size contrast to lossy one without any data loss. Medical image data is very sensitive and needs lossless compression otherwise it will result in erroneous input for the health recovery process. This paper focuses on Ultrasound medical image region of interest(ROI) lossless compression as watermark using different techniques; PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG2000 and Lempel Ziv Welsh (LZW). LZW technique was found 86% better than other tabulated techniques. Compression ratio and more bytes reduction were the parameters considered for the selection of better compression technique. In this work LZW has been used successfully for watermark lossless compression to watermark medical images in teleradiology to ensure less payload encapsulation into images to preserve their perceptual and diagnostic qualities unchanged. On the other side in teleradiology the extracted lossless decompressed watermarks ensure the images authentication and their lossless recoveries in case of any tamper occurrences

Imaging technology has long played a principal role in the medical domain, and as such, its use is widespread in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous health conditions. Concurrently, new developments in imaging techniques and sensor technology make possible the acquisition of increasingly detailed images of several organs of the human body. This improvement is indeed advantageous for medical practitioners. However, it comes to a cost in the form of storage and telecommunication infrastructures needed to handle high-resolution images reliably. Ordinarily, digital compression is a mainstay in the efficient management of digital media, including still images and video. From a technical point of view, medical imaging could take full advantage of digital compression technology. However, nuances unique to medical data impose constraints to the application of digital compression in medical images. This paper presents an overview of digital compression in the context of still medical images, along with a brief discussion on related regulatory and legal implications. Large size data not only require more storage space but also require more transmission time in communication environment. Mostly this obstacle exists in every type image communication process such as in satellite and distributed health facilities provision applications. Data compression causes reduction in storage space and communication time. Data compression is divided into two main categories, lossy and lossless. Although in lossy compression the compression ratio is higher than lossless but mostly important part of data is lost. During data lossless compression important data is not lost and only size reduction taking place. Teleradiology is a health promoting technology used to share medical images among different experts located apart from each other to analyze the image data for patient better treatment and surgical planning. Medical image data is very sensitive data and need its compression without any loss otherwise it will result in erroneous input into health recovery process. This paper focuses on Ultrasound medical image lossless compression using different techniques. PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG2000 version j2c, JPEG2000 version jp2 in lossless mode techniques were used for this purpose as shown in table 1. The techniques were compared based on compression ratio, time taken during compression and PNG was found the best one. The selected technique is suggested to be used for digital watermarking of Ultrasound medical images. Our consideration is US images because US images are small in sizes as compared to images produced by other modalities and most of information is located in the central part of the image known as Region of Interest (ROI). The rest of the image other than ROI is known as Region of Non Interest (RONI). The main purpose of image compression is the removal of redundant data in such a way that it can be reversed to their original version for the desired operations [Vilas H. Gaidhane et al, 2011]

Significant medical image compression techniques: a review

Telemedicine applications allow the patient and doctor to communicate with each other through network services. Several medical image compression techniques have been suggested by researchers in the past years. This review paper offers a comparison of the algorithms and the performance by analysing three factors that influence the choice of compression algorithm, which are image quality, compression ratio, and compression speed. The results of previous research have shown that there is a need for effective algorithms for medical imaging without data loss, which is why the lossless compression process is used to compress medical records. Lossless compression, however, has minimal compression ratio efficiency. The way to get the optimum compression ratio is by segmentation of the image into region of interest (ROI) and non-ROI zones, where the power and time needed can be minimised due to the smaller scale. Recently, several researchers have been attempting to create hybrid compression algorithms by integrating different compression techniques to increase the efficiency of compression algorithms

Image Compression Techniques by using Wavelet Transform

This paper is concerned with a certain type of compression techniques by using wavelet transforms. Wavelets are used to characterize a complex pattern as a series of simple patterns and coefficients that, when multiplied and summed, reproduce the original pattern.  The data compression schemes can be divided into lossless and lossy compression. Lossy compression generally provides much higher compression than lossless compression. Wavelets are a class of functions used to localize a given signal in both space and scaling domains. A MinImage was originally created to test one type of wavelet and the additional functionality was added to Image to support other wavelet types, and the EZW coding algorithm was implemented to achieve better compression. Image Compression addresses the problem of reducing the amount of data required to represent the digital image. Image compression and decompression are very popular processes in image processing. Image compression is a way in which the data to be transmitted are compressed into a smaller version and then transmitted. Compression is achieved by the removal of one or more of three basic data redundancies: (1) Coding redundancy, which is present when less than optimal (i.e. the smallest length) code words are used; (2) Interpixel redundancy, which results from correlations between the pixels of an imag
