    Evaluation of cross-layer reliability mechanisms for satellite digital multimedia broadcast

    This paper presents a study of some reliability mechanisms which may be put at work in the context of Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (SDMB) to mobile devices such as handheld phones. These mechanisms include error correcting codes, interleaving at the physical layer, erasure codes at intermediate layers and error concealment on the video decoder. The evaluation is made on a realistic satellite channel and takes into account practical constraints such as the maximum zapping time and the user mobility at several speeds. The evaluation is done by simulating different scenarii with complete protocol stacks. The simulations indicate that, under the assumptions taken here, the scenario using highly compressed video protected by erasure codes at intermediate layers seems to be the best solution on this kind of channel

    Video over DSL with LDGM Codes for Interactive Applications

    Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) network access is subject to error bursts, which, for interactive video, can introduce unacceptable latencies if video packets need to be re-sent. If the video packets are protected against errors with Forward Error Correction (FEC), calculation of the application-layer channel codes themselves may also introduce additional latency. This paper proposes Low-Density Generator Matrix (LDGM) codes rather than other popular codes because they are more suitable for interactive video streaming, not only for their computational simplicity but also for their licensing advantage. The paper demonstrates that a reduction of up to 4 dB in video distortion is achievable with LDGM Application Layer (AL) FEC. In addition, an extension to the LDGM scheme is demonstrated, which works by rearranging the columns of the parity check matrix so as to make it even more resilient to burst errors.     Providing 3D video services: the challenge from 2D to 3DTV quality of experience

    Recently, three-dimensional (3D) video has decisively burst onto the entertainment industry scene, and has arrived in households even before the standardization process has been completed. 3D television (3DTV) adoption and deployment can be seen as a major leap in television history, similar to previous transitions from black and white (B&W) to color, from analog to digital television (TV), and from standard definition to high definition. In this paper, we analyze current 3D video technology trends in order to define a taxonomy of the availability and possible introduction of 3D-based services. We also propose an audiovisual network services architecture which provides a smooth transition from two-dimensional (2D) to 3DTV in an Internet Protocol (IP)-based scenario. Based on subjective assessment tests, we also analyze those factors which will influence the quality of experience in those 3D video services, focusing on effects of both coding and transmission errors. In addition, examples of the application of the architecture and results of assessment tests are provided

    Multimedia streaming over wireless channels

    The improvements in mobile communication systems have accelerated the development of new multimedia streaming techniques to increase the quality of streaming data over time varying wireless channels. In order to increase multimedia quality, error control schemes are indispensable due to time-varying and erroneous nature of the channel. However, relatively low channel capacity of wireless channels, and dependency structure in multimedia limit the eectiveness of existing error control schemes and require more sophisticated techniques to provide quality improvement on the streaming data. In this thesis, we propose sender driven multimedia streaming algorithms that incorporate error control schemes of FEC, ARQ, and packet scheduling by considering media and channel parameters such as packet importance, packet dependencies, decoding deadlines, channel state information, and channel capacity. Initially, we have proposed a multi-rate distortion optimization framework so as to jointly optimize FEC rate and packet selection by minimizing end-to-end distortion to satisfy a specified Quality of Service under channel capacity constraint. Minimization of end-to-end distortion causes computational complexity in the rate distortion optimization framework due to dependency in encoded multimedia. Therefore, we propose multimedia streaming algorithms that select packet and FEC rate with reduced computational complexity and high quality as compared with multi-rate distortion optimization framework. Additionally, protocol stack of a UMTS cellular network system with W-CDMA air interface is presented in order to clarify the relation between proposed multimedia streaming algorithms and UMTS system that is used in simulations. Finally, proposed algorithms are simulated and results demonstrate that proposed algorithms improve multimedia quality significantly as compared to existing methods

    DVB-NGH: the Next Generation of Digital Broadcast Services to Handheld Devices

    This paper reviews the main technical solutions adopted by the next-generation mobile broadcasting standard DVB-NGH, the handheld evolution of the second-generation digital terrestrial TV standard DVB-T2. The main new technical elements introduced with respect to DVB-T2 are: layered video coding with multiple physical layer pipes, time-frequency slicing, full support of an IP transport layer with a dedicated protocol stack, header compression mechanisms for both IP and MPEG-2 TS packets, new low-density parity check coding rates for the data path (down to 1/5), nonuniform constellations for 64 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) and 256QAM, 4-D rotated constellations for Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK), improved time interleaving in terms of zapping time, end-to-end latency and memory consumption, improved physical layer signaling in terms of robustness, capacity and overhead, a novel distributed multiple input single output transmit diversity scheme for single-frequency networks (SFNs), and efficient provisioning of local content in SFNs. All these technological solutions, together with the high performance of DVB-T2, make DVB-NGH a real next-generation mobile multimedia broadcasting technology. In fact, DVB-NGH can be regarded the first third-generation broadcasting system because it allows for the possibility of using multiple input multiple output antenna schemes to overcome the Shannon limit of single antenna wireless communications. Furthermore, DVB-NGH also allows the deployment of an optional satellite component forming a hybrid terrestrial-satellite network topology to improve the coverage in rural areas where the installation of terrestrial networks could be uneconomical.GĂłmez Barquero, D.; Douillard, C.; Moss, P.; Mignone, V.
