Vertex cover problem studied by cavity method: Analytics and population dynamics
We study the vertex cover problem on finite connectivity random graphs by
zero-temperature cavity method. The minimum vertex cover corresponds to the
ground state(s) of a proposed Ising spin model. When the connectivity
c>e=2.718282, there is no state for this system as the reweighting parameter y,
which takes a similar role as the inverse temperature \beta in conventional
statistical physics, approaches infinity; consequently the ground state energy
is obtained at a finite value of y when the free energy function attains its
maximum value. The minimum vertex cover size at given c is estimated using
population dynamics and compared with known rigorous bounds and numerical

Palette-colouring: a belief-propagation approach
We consider a variation of the prototype combinatorial-optimisation problem
known as graph-colouring. Our optimisation goal is to colour the vertices of a
graph with a fixed number of colours, in a way to maximise the number of
different colours present in the set of nearest neighbours of each given
vertex. This problem, which we pictorially call "palette-colouring", has been
recently addressed as a basic example of problem arising in the context of
distributed data storage. Even though it has not been proved to be NP complete,
random search algorithms find the problem hard to solve. Heuristics based on a
naive belief propagation algorithm are observed to work quite well in certain
conditions. In this paper, we build upon the mentioned result, working out the
correct belief propagation algorithm, which needs to take into account the
many-body nature of the constraints present in this problem. This method
improves the naive belief propagation approach, at the cost of increased
computational effort. We also investigate the emergence of a satisfiable to
unsatisfiable "phase transition" as a function of the vertex mean degree, for
different ensembles of sparse random graphs in the large size ("thermodynamic")

Polynomial iterative algorithms for coloring and analyzing random graphs
We study the graph coloring problem over random graphs of finite average
connectivity . Given a number of available colors, we find that graphs
with low connectivity admit almost always a proper coloring whereas graphs with
high connectivity are uncolorable. Depending on , we find the precise value
of the critical average connectivity . Moreover, we show that below
there exist a clustering phase in which ground states
spontaneously divide into an exponential number of clusters. Furthermore, we
extended our considerations to the case of single instances showing consistent
results. This lead us to propose a new algorithm able to color in polynomial

Streaming and Massively Parallel Algorithms for Edge Coloring
A valid edge-coloring of a graph is an assignment of "colors" to its edges such that no two incident edges receive the same color. The goal is to find a proper coloring that uses few colors. (Note that the maximum degree, Delta, is a trivial lower bound.) In this paper, we revisit this fundamental problem in two models of computation specific to massive graphs, the Massively Parallel Computations (MPC) model and the Graph Streaming model:
- Massively Parallel Computation: We give a randomized MPC algorithm that with high probability returns a Delta+O~(Delta^(3/4)) edge coloring in O(1) rounds using O(n) space per machine and O(m) total space. The space per machine can also be further improved to n^(1-Omega(1)) if Delta = n^Omega(1). Our algorithm improves upon a previous result of Harvey et al. [SPAA 2018].
- Graph Streaming: Since the output of edge-coloring is as large as its input, we consider a standard variant of the streaming model where the output is also reported in a streaming fashion. The main challenge is that the algorithm cannot "remember" all the reported edge colors, yet has to output a proper edge coloring using few colors.
We give a one-pass O~(n)-space streaming algorithm that always returns a valid coloring and uses 5.44 Delta colors with high probability if the edges arrive in a random order. For adversarial order streams, we give another one-pass O~(n)-space algorithm that requires O(Delta^2) colors
Statistical Mechanics of maximal independent sets
The graph theoretic concept of maximal independent set arises in several
practical problems in computer science as well as in game theory. A maximal
independent set is defined by the set of occupied nodes that satisfy some
packing and covering constraints. It is known that finding minimum and
maximum-density maximal independent sets are hard optimization problems. In
this paper, we use cavity method of statistical physics and Monte Carlo
simulations to study the corresponding constraint satisfaction problem on
random graphs. We obtain the entropy of maximal independent sets within the
replica symmetric and one-step replica symmetry breaking frameworks, shedding
light on the metric structure of the landscape of solutions and suggesting a
class of possible algorithms. This is of particular relevance for the
application to the study of strategic interactions in social and economic
networks, where maximal independent sets correspond to pure Nash equilibria of
a graphical game of public goods allocation
Random Graph Coloring - a Statistical Physics Approach
The problem of vertex coloring in random graphs is studied using methods of
statistical physics and probability. Our analytical results are compared to
those obtained by exact enumeration and Monte-Carlo simulations. We critically
discuss the merits and shortcomings of the various methods, and interpret the
results obtained. We present an exact analytical expression for the 2-coloring
problem as well as general replica symmetric approximated solutions for the
thermodynamics of the graph coloring problem with p colors and K-body edges.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figure
Next nearest neighbour Ising models on random graphs
This paper develops results for the next nearest neighbour Ising model on
random graphs. Besides being an essential ingredient in classic models for
frustrated systems, second neighbour interactions interactions arise naturally
in several applications such as the colour diversity problem and graphical
games. We demonstrate ensembles of random graphs, including regular
connectivity graphs, that have a periodic variation of free energy, with either
the ratio of nearest to next nearest couplings, or the mean number of nearest
neighbours. When the coupling ratio is integer paramagnetic phases can be found
at zero temperature. This is shown to be related to the locked or unlocked
nature of the interactions. For anti-ferromagnetic couplings, spin glass phases
are demonstrated at low temperature. The interaction structure is formulated as
a factor graph, the solution on a tree is developed. The replica symmetric and
energetic one-step replica symmetry breaking solution is developed using the
cavity method. We calculate within these frameworks the phase diagram and
demonstrate the existence of dynamical transitions at zero temperature for
cases of anti-ferromagnetic coupling on regular and inhomogeneous random

Techniques of replica symmetry breaking and the storage problem of the McCulloch-Pitts neuron
In this article the framework for Parisi's spontaneous replica symmetry
breaking is reviewed, and subsequently applied to the example of the
statistical mechanical description of the storage properties of a
McCulloch-Pitts neuron. The technical details are reviewed extensively, with
regard to the wide range of systems where the method may be applied. Parisi's
partial differential equation and related differential equations are discussed,
and a Green function technique introduced for the calculation of replica
averages, the key to determining the averages of physical quantities. The
ensuing graph rules involve only tree graphs, as appropriate for a
mean-field-like model. The lowest order Ward-Takahashi identity is recovered
analytically and is shown to lead to the Goldstone modes in continuous replica
symmetry breaking phases. The need for a replica symmetry breaking theory in
the storage problem of the neuron has arisen due to the thermodynamical
instability of formerly given solutions. Variational forms for the neuron's
free energy are derived in terms of the order parameter function x(q), for
different prior distribution of synapses. Analytically in the high temperature
limit and numerically in generic cases various phases are identified, among
them one similar to the Parisi phase in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model.
Extensive quantities like the error per pattern change slightly with respect to
the known unstable solutions, but there is a significant difference in the
distribution of non-extensive quantities like the synaptic overlaps and the
pattern storage stability parameter. A simulation result is also reviewed and
