    Backup and Recovery Mechanisms of Cassandra Database: A Review

    Cassandra is a NoSQL database having a peer-to-peer, ring-type architecture. Cassandra offers fault-tolerance, data replication for higher availability as well as ensures no single point of failure. Given that Cassandra is a NoSQL database, it is evident that it lacks the amount of research that has gone into comparatively older and more widely and broadly used SQL databases. Cassandraā€™s growing popularity in recent times gives rise to the need of addressing any security-related or recovery-related concerns associated with its usage. This review paper discusses the existing deletion mechanism in Cassandra and presents some identified issues related to backup and recovery in the Cassandra database. Further, failure detection as well as handling of failures such as node failure or data center failure has been explored in the paper. In addition, several possible solutions to address backup and recovery including recovery in case of disasters have been reviewed

    A Study of Mongodb and Oracle in an E-Commerce Environment

    As worldwide e-commerce expands, businesses continue to look for better ways to meet their evolving needs with web solutions that scale and perform adequately. Several online retailers have been able to address scaling challenges through the implementation of NoSQL databases. While architecturally different from their relational database counterparts, NoSQL databases typically achieve performance gains by relaxing one or more of the essential transaction processing attributes of atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability (ACID). As with any emerging technology, there are both critics and supporters of NoSQL databases. The detractors claim that NoSQL is not safe and is at a greater risk for data loss. On the other hand, its ardent defenders boast the performance gains achieved over their relational counterparts. This thesis studies the NoSQL database known as MongoDB, and discusses its ability to support the growing needs of e-commerce data processing. It then examines MongoDB\u27s raw performance (compared to Oracle 11g R2, a relational database) and discusses its adherence to ACID

    Implementing an institutional repository for digital archive communities: Experiences from National Taiwan University

    This paper presents an empirical study of expanding and extending DSpace digital repository system for an academic institution. National Taiwan University created a portal web site, the Digital Archives Resource Centre (DARC), to provide the digital archives communities with preservation base for their rich research materials, and to provide the public with a helpful information retrieval service. Several modifications and extensions for the DSpace system are made in order to integrate various database resources with different formats among university departments. In this paper, we will present our empirical case in which adjustments of the DSpace system are made in areas such as data submission, metadata mapping, digital rights management, user interface and visualization. Our discussion will be focused on the useful applications in which digital archives communities benefit from the adapted DSpace system in disseminating their contents and long-term preservation within NTU campus. We will also discuss the ways in which the users benefit from the new system for searching and using digital archives

    Representation recovers information

    Early agreement within cognitive science on the topic of representation has now given way to a combination of positions. Some question the significance of representation in cognition. Others continue to argue in favor, but the case has not been demonstrated in any formal way. The present paper sets out a framework in which the value of representation-use can be mathematically measured, albeit in a broadly sensory context rather than a specifically cognitive one. Key to the approach is the use of Bayesian networks for modeling the distal dimension of sensory processes. More relevant to cognitive science is the theoretical result obtained, which is that a certain type of representational architecture is *necessary* for achievement of sensory efficiency. While exhibiting few of the characteristics of traditional, symbolic encoding, this architecture corresponds quite closely to the forms of embedded representation now being explored in some embedded/embodied approaches. It becomes meaningful to view that type of representation-use as a form of information recovery. A formal basis then exists for viewing representation not so much as the substrate of reasoning and thought, but rather as a general medium for efficient, interpretive processing

    Effective interprocess communication (IPC) in a real-time transputer network

    The thesis describes the design and implementation of an interprocess communication (IPC) mechanism within a real-time distributed operating system kernel (RT-DOS) which is designed for a transputer-based network. The requirements of real-time operating systems are examined and existing design and implementation strategies are described. Particular attention is paid to one of the object-oriented techniques although it is concluded that these techniques are not feasible for the chosen implementation platform. Studies of a number of existing operating systems are reported. The choices for various aspects of operating system design and their influence on the IPC mechanism to be used are elucidated. The actual design choices are related to the real-time requirements and the implementation that has been adopted is described. [Continues.
