A network transparent, retained mode multimedia processing framework for the Linux operating system environment

    Get PDF

A video codec is a device or software module that enables the use of compression for digital video. Historically, video was stored as an analog signal on magnetic tape

    Augmented Reality Framework and Demonstrator

Augmenting the real-world with digital information can improve the human perception in many ways. In recent years, a large amount of research has been conducted in the field of Augmented Reality (AR) and related technologies. Subsequently, different AR systems have been developed for the use in different areas such as medical, education, military, and entertainment. This thesis investigates augmented reality systems and challenges of realistic rendering in AR environment. Besides, an object-oriented framework, named ThirdEye, has been designed and implemented in order to facilitate the process of developing augmented reality applications for experimental purposes. This framework has been developed in two versions for desktop and mobile platforms. With ThirdEye, it is easier to port the same AR demo application to both platforms, manage and modify all AR demo application components, compared to the various existing libraries. Each feature that the ThirdEye framework includes, may be provided by other existing libraries separately but this framework provides those features in an easy-to-use manner. In order to evaluate usability and performance of ThirdEye and also for demonstrating challenges of simulating some of the light effects in the AR environment, such as shadow and refraction, several AR demos were developed using this framework. Performance of the implemented AR demos were benchmarked and bottlenecks of different components of the framework were investigated. This thesis explains the structure of the ThirdEye framework, its main components and the employed technologies and the Software Development Kits (SDKs). Furthermore, by using a simple demo, it is explained how this framework can be utilized to develop an AR application step by step. Lastly, several ideas for future development are described

Augmented reality device for first response scenarios

    Get PDF
A prototype of a wearable computer system is proposed and implemented using commercial off-shelf components. The system is designed to allow the user to access location-specific information about an environment, and to provide capability for user tracking. Areas of applicability include primarily first response scenarios, with possible applications in maintenance or construction of buildings and other structures. Necessary preparation of the target environment prior to system\u27s deployment is limited to noninvasive labeling using optical fiducial markers. The system relies on computational vision methods for registration of labels and user position. With the system the user has access to on-demand information relevant to a particular real-world location. Team collaboration is assisted by user tracking and real-time visualizations of team member positions within the environment. The user interface and display methods are inspired by Augmented Reality1 (AR) techniques, incorporating a video-see-through Head Mounted Display (HMD) and fingerbending sensor glove.*. 1Augmented reality (AR) is a field of computer research which deals with the combination of real world and computer generated data. At present, most AR research is concerned with the use of live video imagery which is digitally processed and augmented by the addition of computer generated graphics. Advanced research includes the use of motion tracking data, fiducial marker recognition using machine vision, and the construction of controlled environments containing any number of sensors and actuators. Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware, Services, and Applications

Today, there is a strong trend towards networked multimedia devices. However, common multimedia software architectures are restricted to perform all processing on a single system. Available software infrastructures for distributed computing — commonly referred to as middleware — only partly provide the facilities needed for supporting multimedia in distributed and dynamic environments. Approaches from the research community only focus on specific aspects and do not achieve the coverage needed for a full-featured multimedia middleware solution. The Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware (NMM) presented in this thesis considers the network as an integral part. Despite the inherent heterogeneity of present networking and device technologies, the architecture allows to extend control and cooperation to the network and enables the development of distributed multimedia applications that transparently use local and remote components in combination. The base architecture of this middleware is augmented by several middleware services that especially aim at providing additional support for developing complex applications that involve mobile users and devices. To this end, previously not available services and corresponding abstractions are proposed, realized, and evaluated. The performance and applicability of the developed middleware and its additional services are demonstrated by describing different realized application scenarios.
