    Dynamically generated multi-modal application interfaces

    This work introduces a new UIMS (User Interface Management System), which aims to solve numerous problems in the field of user-interface development arising from hard-coded use of user interface toolkits. The presented solution is a concrete system architecture based on the abstract ARCH model consisting of an interface abstraction-layer, a dialog definition language called GIML (Generalized Interface Markup Language) and pluggable interface rendering modules. These components form an interface toolkit called GITK (Generalized Interface ToolKit). With the aid of GITK (Generalized Interface ToolKit) one can build an application, without explicitly creating a concrete end-user interface. At runtime GITK can create these interfaces as needed from the abstract specification and run them. Thereby GITK is equipping one application with many interfaces, even kinds of interfaces that did not exist when the application was written. It should be noted that this work will concentrate on providing the base infrastructure for adaptive/adaptable system, and does not aim to deliver a complete solution. This work shows that the proposed solution is a fundamental concept needed to create interfaces for everyone, which can be used everywhere and at any time. This text further discusses the impact of such technology for users and on the various aspects of software systems and their development.     Mobile Music Development Tools for Creative Coders

    This project is a body of work that facilitates the creation of musical mobile artworks. The project includes a code toolkit that enhances and simplifies the development of mobile music iOS applications, a flexible notation system designed for mobile musical interactions, and example apps and scored compositions to demonstrate the toolkit and notation system. The code library is designed to simplify the technical aspect of user-centered design and development with a more direct connection between concept and deliverable. This sim- plification addresses learning problems (such as motivation, self-efficacy, and self-perceived understanding) by bridging the gap between idea and functional prototype and improving the ability to contextualize the development process for musicians and other creatives. The toolkit helps to circumvent the need to learn complex iOS development patterns and affords more readable code. CSPD (color, shape, pattern, density) notation is a pseudo-tablature that describes performance interactions. The system leverages visual density and patterns of both color and shape to describe types of gestures (physical or musical) and their relationships rather than focusing on strict rhythmic or pitch/frequency content.     A component-based collaboration infrastructure

    Groupware applications allow geographically distributed users to collaborate on shared tasks. However, it is widely recognized that groupware applications are expensive to build due to coordination services and group dynamics, neither of which is present in single-user applications. Previous collaboration transparency systems reuse existing single-user applications as a whole for collaborative work, often at the price of inflexible coordination. Previous collaboration awareness systems, on the other hand, provide reusable coordination services and multi-user widgets, but often with two weaknesses: (1) the multi-user widgets provided are special-purpose and limited in number, while no guidelines are provided for developing multi-user interface components in general; and (2) they often fail to reach the desired level of flexibility in coordination by tightly binding shared data and coordination services. In this dissertation, we propose a component-based approach to developing group- ware applications that addresses the above two problems. To address the first prob- lem, we propose a shared component model for modeling data and graphic user inter- face(GUI) components of groupware applications. As a result, the myriad of existing single-user components can be re-purposed as shared GUI or data components. An adaptation tool is developed to assist the adaptation process. To address the second problem, we propose a coordination service framework which systematically model the interaction between user, data, and coordination protocols. Due to the clean separation of data and control and the capability to dynamically "glue" them together, the framework provides reusable services such as data distribution, persistence, and adaptable consistency control. The association between data and coordination services can be dynamically changed at runtime. An Evolvable and eXtensible Environment for Collaboration (EXEC) is built to evaluate the proposed approach. In our experiments, we demonstrate two benefits of our approach: (1) a group of common groupware features adapted from existing single- user components are plugged in to extend the functionalities of the environment itself; and (2)coordination services can be dynamically attached to and detached from these shared components at different granules to support evolving collaboration needs

    Virtual Frameworks for Source Migration

    Virtual Frameworks for source migration is a methodology to extract classes and interfaces from one or more frameworks used by an application. After migration, a new set of frameworks called virtual frameworks can replace the original frameworks used. The classes and interfaces extracted are used to create a proxy layer for these new frameworks. The application then depends on this proxy layer, and through it the new frameworks, rather than on the original frameworks. A combination of three patterns: Bridge, Adapter, and Proxy are used in these new frameworks. By doing so the changes made to the application source code are minimized during migration

However, individual identifiable patient information needs to be protected in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and the quality of patient data also needs to be ensured in order for data mining tasks achieve accurate results. This thesis describes a patient data transformation system which transforms patient data into high quality and anonymous patient records that is suitable for data mining purposes.;This document discusses the underlying technologies, features implemented in the prototype, and the methodologies used in developing the software. The prototype emphasizes the patient privacy and quality of the patient data as well as software scalability and portability. Preliminary experience of its use is presented.     Distributed D3: A web-based distributed data visualisation framework for Big Data

    The influx of Big Data has created an ever-growing need for analytic tools targeting towards the acquisition of insights and knowledge from large datasets. Visual perception as a fundamental tool used by humans to retrieve information from the outside world around us has its unique ability to distinguish patterns pre-attentively. Visual analytics via data visualisations is therefore a very powerful tool and has become ever more important in this era. Data-Driven Documents (D3.js) is a versatile and popular web-based data visualisation library that has tended to be the standard toolkit for visualising data in recent years. However, the library is technically inherent and limited in capability by the single thread model of a single browser window in a single machine, and therefore not able to deal with large datasets. The main objective of this thesis is to overcome this limitation and address possible challenges by developing the Distributed D3 framework that employs distributed mechanism to enable the possibility of delivering web-based visualisations for large-scale data, which also allows to effectively utilise the graphical computational resources of the modern visualisation environments. As a result, the first contribution is that the integrated version of Distributed D3 framework has been developed for the Data Observatory. The work proves the concept of Distributed D3 is feasible in reality and also enables developers to collaborate on large-scale data visualisations by using it on the Data Observatory. The second contribution is that the Distributed D3 has been optimised by investigating the potential bottlenecks for large-scale data visualisation applications. The work finds the key performance bottlenecks of the framework and shows an improvement of the overall performance by 35.7% after optimisations, which improves the scalability and usability of Distributed D3 for large-scale data visualisation applications. The third contribution is that the generic version of Distributed D3 framework has been developed for the customised environments. The work improves the usability and flexibility of the framework and makes it ready to be published in the open-source community for further improvements and usages.Open Acces

    A Pattern-Based Approach to Scaffold the IT Infrastructure Design Process

    Context. The design of Information Technology (IT) infrastructures is a challenging task since it implies proficiency in several areas that are rarely mastered by a single person, thus raising communication problems among those in charge of conceiving, deploying, operating and maintaining/managing them. Most IT infrastructure designs are based on proprietary models, known as blueprints or product-oriented architectures, defined by vendors to facilitate the configuration of a particular solution, based upon their services and products portfolio. Existing blueprints can be facilitators in the design of solutions for a particular vendor or technology. However, since organizations may have infrastructure components from multiple vendors, the use of blueprints aligned with commercial product(s) may cause integration problems among these components and can lead to vendor lock-in. Additionally, these blueprints have a short lifecycle, due to their association with product version(s) or a specific technology, which hampers their usage as a tool for the reuse of IT infrastructure knowledge. Objectives. The objectives of this dissertation are (i) to mitigate the inability to reuse knowledge in terms of best practices in the design of IT infrastructures and, (ii) to simplify the usage of this knowledge, making the IT infrastructure designs simpler, quicker and better documented, while facilitating the integration of components from different vendors and minimizing the communication problems between teams. Method. We conducted an online survey and performed a systematic literature review to support the state of the art and to provide evidence that this research was relevant and had not been conducted before. A model-driven approach was also used for the formalization and empirical validation of well-formedness rules to enhance the overall process of designing IT infrastructures. To simplify and support the design process, a modeling tool, including its abstract and concrete syntaxes was also extended to include the main contributions of this dissertation. Results. We obtained 123 responses to the online survey. Their majority were from people with more than 15 years experience with IT infrastructures. The respondents confirmed our claims regarding the lack of formality and documentation problems on knowledge transfer and only 19% considered that their current practices to represent IT Infrastructures are efficient. A language for modeling IT Infrastructures including an abstract and concrete syntax is proposed to address the problem of informality in their design. A catalog of IT Infrastructure patterns is also proposed to allow expressing best practices in their design. The modeling tool was also evaluated and according to 84% of the respondents, this approach decreases the effort associated with IT infrastructure design and 89% considered that the use of a repository with infrastructure patterns, will help to improve the overall quality of IT infrastructures representations. A controlled experiment was also performed to assess the effectiveness of both the proposed language and the pattern-based IT infrastructure design process supported by the tool. Conclusion. With this work, we contribute to improve the current state of the art in the design of IT infrastructures replacing the ad-hoc methods with more formal ones to address the problems of ambiguity, traceability and documentation, among others, that characterize most of IT infrastructure representations.
