    Energy-Aware Server Provisioning by Introducing Middleware-Level Dynamic Green Scheduling

    International audienceSeveral approaches to reduce the power consumption of datacenters have been described in the literature, most of which aim to improve energy efficiency by trading off performance for reducing power consumption. However, these approaches do not always provide means for administrators and users to specify how they want to explore such trade-offs. This work provides techniques for assigning jobs to distributed resources, exploring energy efficient resource provisioning. We use middleware-level mechanisms to adapt resource allocation according to energy-related events and user-defined rules. A proposed framework enables developers, users and system administrators to specify and explore energy efficiency and performance trade-offs without detailed knowledge of the underlying hardware platform. Evaluation of the proposed solution under three scheduling policies shows gains of 25% in energy-efficiency with minimal impact on the overall application performance.     THOR: A Hybrid Recommender System for the Personalized Travel Experience

    One of the travelers’ main challenges is that they have to spend a great effort to find and choose the most desired travel offer(s) among a vast list of non-categorized and non-personalized items. Recommendation systems provide an effective way to solve the problem of information overload. In this work, we design and implement “The Hybrid Offer Ranker” (THOR), a hybrid, personalized recommender system for the transportation domain. THOR assigns every traveler a unique contextual preference model built using solely their personal data, which makes the model sensitive to the user’s choices. This model is used to rank travel offers presented to each user according to their personal preferences. We reduce the recommendation problem to one of binary classification that predicts the probability with which the traveler will buy each available travel offer. Travel offers are ranked according to the computed probabilities, hence to the user’s personal preference model. Moreover, to tackle the cold start problem for new users, we apply clustering algorithms to identify groups of travelers with similar profiles and build a preference model for each group. To test the system’s performance, we generate a dataset according to some carefully designed rules. The results of the experiments show that the THOR tool is capable of learning the contextual preferences of each traveler and ranks offers starting from those that have the higher probability of being selected

    Performance improvement in geographic routing for vehicular Ad Hoc networks

    Geographic routing is one of the most investigated themes by researchers for reliable and efficient dissemination of information in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs). Recently, different Geographic Distance Routing (GEDIR) protocols have been suggested in the literature. These protocols focus on reducing the forwarding region towards destination to select the Next Hop Vehicles (NHV). Most of these protocols suffer from the problem of elevated one-hop link disconnection, high end-to-end delay and low throughput even at normal vehicle speed in high vehicle density environment. This paper proposes a Geographic Distance Routing protocol based on Segment vehicle, Link quality and Degree of connectivity (SLD-GEDIR). The protocol selects a reliable NHV using the criteria segment vehicles, one-hop link quality and degree of connectivity. The proposed protocol has been simulated in NS-2 and its performance has been compared with the state-of-the-art protocols: P-GEDIR, J-GEDIR and V-GEDIR. The empirical results clearly reveal that SLD-GEDIR has lower link disconnection and end-to-end delay, and higher throughput as compared to the state-of-the-art protocols.     Categorizing Natural Language-Based Customer Satisfaction: An Implementation Method Using Support Vector Machine and Long Short-Term Memory Neural Network

    Analyzing natural language-based Customer Satisfaction (CS) is a tedious process. This issue is practically true if one is to manually categorize large datasets. Fortunately, the advent of supervised machine learning techniques has paved the way toward the design of efficient categorization systems used for CS. This paper presents the feasibility of designing a text categorization model using two popular and robust algorithms – the Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Neural Network, in order to automatically categorize complaints, suggestions, feedbacks, and commendations. The study found that, in terms of training accuracy, SVM has best rating of 98.63% while LSTM has best rating of 99.32%. Such results mean that both SVM and LSTM algorithms are at par with each other in terms of training accuracy, but SVM is significantly faster than LSTM by approximately 35.47s. The training performance results of both algorithms are attributed on the limitations of the dataset size, high-dimensionality of both English and Tagalog languages, and applicability of the feature engineering techniques used. Interestingly, based on the results of actual implementation, both algorithms are found to be 100% effective in accurately predicting the correct CS categories. Hence, the extent of preference between the two algorithms boils down on the available dataset and the skill in optimizing these algorithms through feature engineering techniques and in implementing them toward actual text categorization applications

    Attention-Inspired Artificial Neural Networks for Speech Processing: A Systematic Review

    Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were created inspired by the neural networks in the human brain and have been widely applied in speech processing. The application areas of ANN include: Speech recognition, speech emotion recognition, language identification, speech enhancement, and speech separation, amongst others. Likewise, given that speech processing performed by humans involves complex cognitive processes known as auditory attention, there has been a growing amount of papers proposing ANNs supported by deep learning algorithms in conjunction with some mechanism to achieve symmetry with the human attention process. However, while these ANN approaches include attention, there is no categorization of attention integrated into the deep learning algorithms and their relation with human auditory attention. Therefore, we consider it necessary to have a review of the different ANN approaches inspired in attention to show both academic and industry experts the available models for a wide variety of applications. Based on the PRISMA methodology, we present a systematic review of the literature published since 2000, in which deep learning algorithms are applied to diverse problems related to speech processing. In this paper 133 research works are selected and the following aspects are described: (i) Most relevant features, (ii) ways in which attention has been implemented, (iii) their hypothetical relationship with human attention, and (iv) the evaluation metrics used. Additionally, the four publications most related with human attention were analyzed and their strengths and weaknesses were determined

    Hybrid Intrusion Detection System for DDoS Attacks

    Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks are one of the major threats and possibly the hardest security problem for today’s Internet. In this paper we propose a hybrid detection system, referred to as hybrid intrusion detection system (H-IDS), for detection of DDoS attacks. Our proposed detection system makes use of both anomaly-based and signature-based detection methods separately but in an integrated fashion and combines the outcomes of both detectors to enhance the overall detection accuracy. We apply two distinct datasets to our proposed system in order to test the detection performance of H-IDS and conclude that the proposed hybrid system gives better results than the systems based on nonhybrid detection

    Sentiment Analysis for Fake News Detection

    [Abstract] In recent years, we have witnessed a rise in fake news, i.e., provably false pieces of information created with the intention of deception. The dissemination of this type of news poses a serious threat to cohesion and social well-being, since it fosters political polarization and the distrust of people with respect to their leaders. The huge amount of news that is disseminated through social media makes manual verification unfeasible, which has promoted the design and implementation of automatic systems for fake news detection. The creators of fake news use various stylistic tricks to promote the success of their creations, with one of them being to excite the sentiments of the recipients. This has led to sentiment analysis, the part of text analytics in charge of determining the polarity and strength of sentiments expressed in a text, to be used in fake news detection approaches, either as a basis of the system or as a complementary element.
