    Design and prototype of a train-to-wayside communication architecture

    Telecommunication has become very important in modern society and seems to be almost omnipresent, making daily life easier, more pleasant and connecting people everywhere. It does not only connect people, but also machines, enhancing the efficiency of automated tasks and monitoring automated processes. In this context the IBBT (Interdisciplinary Institute for BroadBand Technology) project TRACK (TRain Applications over an advanced Communication networK), sets the definition and prototyping of an end-to-end train-to-wayside communication architecture as one of the main research goals. The architecture provides networking capabilities for train monitoring, personnel applications and passenger Internet services. In the context of the project a prototype framework was developed to give a complete functioning demonstrator. Every aspect: tunneling and mobility, performance enhancements, and priority and quality of service were taken into consideration. In contrast to other research in this area, which has given mostly high-level overviews, TRACK resulted in a detailed architecture with all different elements present

    Delay-centric handover in SCTP

    The introduction of the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) has opened the possibility of a mobile aware transport protocol. The multihoming feature of SCTP negates the need for a solution such as Mobile IP and, as SCTP is a transport layer protocol, it adds no complexity to the network. Utilizing the handover procedure of SCTP, the large bandwidth of WLAN can be exploited whilst in the coverage of a hotspot, and still retain the 3G connection for when the user roams out of the hotspot’s range. All this functionality is provided at the transport layer and is transparent to the end user, something that is still important in non-mobile-aware legacy applications. However, there is one drawback to this scenario - the current handover scheme implemented in SCTP is failure-centric in nature. Handover is only performed in the presence of primary destination address failure. This dissertation proposes a new scheme for performing handover using SCTP. The handover scheme being proposed employs an aggressive polling of all destination addresses within an individual SCTP association in order to determine the round trip delay to each of these addresses. It then performs handover based on these measured path delays. This delay-centric approach does not incur the penalty associated with the current failover-based scheme, namely a number of timeouts before handover is performed. In some cases the proposed scheme can actually preempt the path failure, and perform handover before it occurs. The proposed scheme has been evaluated through simulation, emulation, and within the context of a wireless environment

    Työssä selvitettiin, miten Satakunnan ammattikorkeakoulun NGN-laboratorion verkosta voidaan tarjota palveluliitäntöjä kolmansille osapuolille. Mahdollisia palveluita olisivat esim. NGN-laboratorion älyverkkoliitäntä IN– ja CAMEL-pyynnöille, GSM-viestikeskusliitäntä, kansainvälinen verkkovierailu tai etäälle sijoitettava tukiasema. Työssä oleellinen osa oli tunnistaa palvelut, sekä selvittää tapa jolla toteuttaa niiden vaatimat yhteydet, perustuen standardiratkaisuihin, kuten SIGTRAN tai CESoPSN.This thesis investigated how to provide service connections to third parties from the NGN laboratory. Potential services could be for example the Intelligent Network access for IN and CAMEL requests, access to SMSC, international GSM roaming or a remote base station. It was essential to recognise these services and find out how those connections are realised based on standard solutions like SIGTRAN or CESoPSN

    Overview of UMTS network evolution through radio and transmission feature validation

    This project is based on several UMTS network feature validation with the aim to provide an end-to-end in-depth knowledge overview gained in parallel in the areas of radio network mobility processes (cell camping and inter-system handover), Quality of Service improvement for HSPA data users and transport network evolution towards the All-IP era.Hardware and software validation is a key step in the relationship between the mobile network operator and the vendor. Through this verification process, while executing that functionality or testing a specific hardware, the difference between the actual result and expected result can be better understood and, in turn, this in-depth knowledge acquisition is translated into a tailored usage of the product in the operator’s live network. As a result, validation helps in building a better product as per the customer’s requirement and helps satisfying their needs, which positively impacts in the future evolution of the vendor product roadmap implementation process for a specific customer. Durante los procesos de certificación, mientras se ejecuta una funcionalidad software o se valida un determinado hardware, se obtiene un conocimiento profundo de la diferencia entre el resultado obtenido y el esperado, repercutiendo directamente en un uso a medida de dicha funcionalidad o hardware en la propia red del cliente. Como consecuencia de lo anterior, podemos aseverar que los procesos de validación permiten en gran medida al proveedor adaptarse mejor a los requerimientos del cliente, ayudando a satisfacer realmente sus necesidades. Esto implica directamente un impacto positivo en la futura evolución del portfolio que el fabricante ofrece a un determinado cliente. Este proyecto está basado en la validación de diferentes funcionalidades de red UMTS, cuyo objetivo es proporcionar un conocimiento global de distintos aspectos que conforman el funcionamiento de una red de telecomunicaciones 3G, como son los procesos de movilidad de acceso radio (acampado de red y handover inter-sistema), las mejoras en la calidad de servicio para usuarios de datos HSPA y la convergencia de la red de transporte hacia la era IP.Els processos de validació hardware i software són un punt clau en les relacions comercials establertes entre un operador de telecomunicaciones i el proveïdor d'equipament de la xarxa. En el transcurs dels processos de certificació, a la mateixa vegada que s'executa una funcionalitat software o es valida un determinat hardware, s'obtenen grans coneixements respecte la diferència entre el resultat obtingut i l'esperat, que són d'aplicació directa a l'hora d'establir un ús adpatat a la xarxa del client. En conseqüència, podem asseverar que les campanyes de validació permeten en gran mesura al proveïdor adaptar-se millor als requeriments del client, ajudant a satisfer realment les seves necessitats. Això implica directament un impacte positiu en la futura evol.lució del portfoli que el fabricant ofereix a un determinat client. Aquest projecte es basa en la presentació d'un procès de validació de diferents funcionalitats relacionades amb la xarxa UMTS, amb l'objectiu de proporcionar un coneixement global de la varietat d'aspectes que conformen el funcionament d'una xarxa de telecomunicacions 3G, com són els processos de mobilitat en accès radio (acampat de l'usuari i handover inter-sistema), millores en la qualitat de servei per a usuaris de dades HSPA i la convergència de la xarxa de transport cap a l'era IP

    OpenEPC Integration within 5GTN as an NFV proof of concept

    Abstract. Gone are the days, when a hardware is changed on every malfunctioning and the whole operation either stays down or load on the replacing hardware becomes too much which ultimately compromises the QoS. The IT industry is mature enough to tackle problems regarding scalability, space utilization, energy consumption, cost, agility and low availability. The expected throughput and network latency with 5G in the cellular Telecommunication Networks seems to be unachievable with the existing architecture and resources. Network Function Virtualization promises to merge IT and Telecommunications in such an efficient way that the expected results could be achieved no longer but sooner. The thesis work examines the compatibility and flexibility of a 3GPP virtual core network in a virtualization platform. The testbed is established on an LTE (Long Term Evolution) based network being already deployed and OpenEPC is added as virtual core network on it. The integration of OpenEPC in 5GTN (5TH Generation Test Network) is discussed in details in the thesis which will give an account of the possibility of implementing such a simulated vEPC (Virtual Evolved Packet Core) in a real network platform. The deployed setup is tested to check its feasibility and flexibility for a platform which could be used for NFV deployment in future. The monitoring of OpenEPC’s individual components while utilizing the major resources within them, forms the primary performance test. The CPU Load and Memory Utilization is tested on different CPU stress levels having a constant data traffic from actual UEs. At the completion of the thesis work, a consensus is built up based on the test results that the test setup can hold number of subscribers to a certain amount without any performance degradation. Moreover, the virtual core network throughput and network latency is also compared to the commercial LTE networks and theoretical maximum values on similar resources to check performance consistency OpenEPC must offer

    Mestrado em Engenharia Electrónica e de Telecomunicações e InformáticaAs Redes de Próxima Geração prometem trazer muitos benefícios aos operadores de telecomunicações. Os operadores que as implementarem poderão oferecer uma maior variedade de aplicações e serviços aos seus subscritores independentemente da sua localização, com custos e complexidade reduzidos. Desta forma os operadores poderão aumentar a sua oferta, com os novos serviços que podem ser oferecidos, enquanto as suas despesas de capital e operação poderão ser reduzidas com a migração das redes telef ónicas baseadas em TDM para as novas arquitecturas de convergência IP. A presente dissertação efectua um estudo destas redes, apresentando os seus requisitos, arquitecturas, protocolos e princípios de funcionamento, dando especial relevância ao sistemas Media Gateway de Acesso e de Trunking. Desta forma foram estudadas e testadas soluções dos subsistema TISPAN de emulação da rede PSTN baseada em IMS para os acessos fixos e dos sistemas de Trunking TISPAN e IMS. É também apresentado o projecto de desenvolvimento de uma Media Gateway de Acesso a integrar na rede SHipNET da PT Inovação. ABSTRACT: Next Generation Networks will bring many benefits to telecommunication networks operators. Operators that deploy it can potentially offer a much wider range of applications and services, to subscribers irrespective of their location, at reduced cost and complexity. This way, operators will increase their revenues through the additional services that can be offered, while their capital expenditure and operation expenses will decrease with their migration from legacy TDM networks to converged network architectures based on IP. This thesis presents a study of these networks, showing their requirements, architectures, protocols and operational principles, giving special relevance to the Media Gateway systems: Access and Trunking. Thus, were studied and tested solutions of the TISPAN PSTN Emulation Subsystem based on IMS, for fixed access, and Trunking systems of IMS and TISPAN. This thesis also presents the project of development of an Access Media Gateway to integrate into the SHipNET network of PT Inovação
