    Distributed storage manager system for synchronized and scalable AV services across networks

The distributed storage manager system provides multiple protocol support for initializing and downloading both streamed and file-based content and provides optimum control mechanisms to organize the storing and retrieval of content that are remained accessible to other multiple heterogeneous devices

    A personalized system for scalable distribution of multimedia content in multicast wireless networks

The architecture takes into account both the user preferences and context in order to provide personalized contents to each user. In this way, third-party applications filter the most appropriate contents for each client in each situation. One of the key characteristics of the proposal is the scalability, which is provided, apart from the use of filtering techniques, through the transmission in multicast networks. In this sense, content delivery is carried out by means of the FLUTE (File Delivery over Unidirectional Transport) protocol, which provides reliability in unidirectional environments through different mechanisms such as AL-FEC (Application Layer Forward Error Correction) codes, used in this paper. Another key characteristic is the context-awareness and personalization of content delivery, which is provided by means of context information, user profiles, and adaptation. The system proposed is validated through several empirical studies. Specifically, the paper presents evaluations of two types that collect objective and subjective measures. The first evaluate the efficiency of the transmission protocol, analyzing how the use of appropriate transmission parameters reduces the download time (and thus increasing the Quality of Experience), which can be minimized by using caching techniques. On the other hand, the subjective measures present a study about the user experience after testing the application and analyze the accuracy of the filtering process/strategy. Results show that using AL-FEC mechanisms produces download times until four times lower than when no protection is used. Also, results prove that there is a code rate that minimizes the download time depending on the losses and that, in general, code rates 0.7 and 0.9 provide good download times for a wide range of losses.     Evaluation of unidirectional background push content download services for the delivery of television programs

    Este trabajo de tesis presenta los servicios de descarga de contenido en modo push como un mecanismo eficiente para el envío de contenido de televisión pre-producido sobre redes de difusión. Hoy en día, los operadores de red dedican una cantidad considerable de recursos de red a la entrega en vivo de contenido televisivo, tanto sobre redes de difusión como sobre conexiones unidireccionales. Esta oferta de servicios responde únicamente a requisitos comerciales: disponer de los contenidos televisivos en cualquier momento y lugar. Sin embargo, desde un punto de vista estrictamente académico, el envío en vivo es únicamente un requerimiento para el contenido en vivo, no para contenidos que ya han sido producidos con anterioridad a su emisión. Más aún, la difusión es solo eficiente cuando el contenido es suficientemente popular. Los servicios bajo estudio en esta tesis utilizan capacidad residual en redes de difusión para enviar contenido pre-producido para que se almacene en los equipos de usuario. La propuesta se justifica únicamente por su eficiencia. Por un lado, genera valor de recursos de red que no se aprovecharían de otra manera. Por otro lado, realiza la entrega de contenidos pre-producidos y populares de la manera más eficiente: sobre servicios de descarga de contenidos en difusión. Los resultados incluyen modelos para la popularidad y la duración de contenidos, valiosos para cualquier trabajo de investigación basados en la entrega de contenidos televisivos. Además, la tesis evalúa la capacidad residual disponible en redes de difusión, por medio de estudios empíricos. Después, estos resultados son utilizados en simulaciones que evalúan las prestaciones de los servicios propuestos en escenarios diferentes y para aplicaciones diferentes. La evaluación demuestra que este tipo de servicios son un recurso muy útil para la entrega de contenido televisivo.This thesis dissertation presents background push Content Download Services as an efficient mechanism to deliver pre-produced television content through existing broadcast networks. Nowadays, network operators dedicate a considerable amount of network resources to live streaming live, through both broadcast and unicast connections. This service offering responds solely to commercial requirements: Content must be available anytime and anywhere. However, from a strictly academic point of view, live streaming is only a requirement for live content and not for pre-produced content. Moreover, broadcasting is only efficient when the content is sufficiently popular. The services under study in this thesis use residual capacity in broadcast networks to push popular, pre-produced content to storage capacity in customer premises equipment. The proposal responds only to efficiency requirements. On one hand, it creates value from network resources otherwise unused. On the other hand, it delivers popular pre-produced content in the most efficient way: through broadcast download services. The results include models for the popularity and the duration of television content, valuable for any research work dealing with file-based delivery of television content. Later, the thesis evaluates the residual capacity available in broadcast networks through empirical studies. These results are used in simulations to evaluate the performance of background push content download services in different scenarios and for different applications.     Video adaptation for mobile digital television

    Mobile digital television is one of the new services introduced recently by telecommunications operators in the market. Due to the possibilities of personalization and interaction provided, together with the increasing demand of this type of portable services, it would be expected to be a successful technology in near future. Video contents stored and transmitted over the networks deployed to provide mobile digital television need to be compressed to reduce the resources required. The compression scheme chosen by the great majority of these networks is H.264/AVC. Compressed video bitstreams have to be adapted to heterogeneous networks and a wide range of terminals. To deal with this problem scalable video coding schemes were proposed and standardized providing temporal, spatial and quality scalability using layers within the encoded bitstream. Because existing H.264/AVC contents cannot benefit from scalability tools, efficient techniques for migration of single-layer to scalable contents are desirable for supporting these mobile digital television systems. This paper proposes a technique to convert from single-layer H.264/AVC bitstream to a scalable bitstream with temporal scalability. Applying this approach, a reduction of 60% of coding complexity is achieved while maintaining the coding efficiency

    FamTV : an architecture for presence-aware personalized television

    Since the advent of the digital era, the traditional TV scenario has rapidly evolved towards an ecosystem comprised of a myriad of services, applications, channels, and contents. As a direct consequence, the amount of available information and configuration options targeted at today's end consumers have become unmanageable. Thus, personalization and usability emerge as indispensable elements to improve our content-overloaded digital homes.     Converged Digital TV Services: The Role of Middleware and Future Directions of Interactive Television

    The migration from analog to digital of the broadcasting technologies, already well consolidated for satellite systems, is becoming a reality also for terrestrial transmission. Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) is also evolving to offer interactive services and a degree of flexibility which can be exploited to offer tailored applications to users which include, for instance interactivity, different levels of personalization, and innovative location-based, as well as context-aware, services. A clear example of this trend is given by the rising success of the Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) which allows for a degree of flexibility on offered services unknown to the traditional broadcasting systems. In this framework, several satellite operators are starting to launch IPTV services using direct satellite links, as well as some terrestrial internet service providers are offering digital TV channels embedded in the IP streaming over XDSL. Furthermore, IPTV services are likely to be broadcast also wirelessly, exploiting advanced broadband access technologies such asWiMAX, LTE, or LTEA. Last, but not least, TV and broadcast services for mobile users have also been deployed in many countries using DVBH and will be soon available on an even broader scale thanks to its satellite counterpart, DVB-SH. In the near future, a set of different technologies able to offer personalized and customized services to different classes of users are expected in the area of wireless broadcasting and convergence of technologies is auspicious. This concept entails different levels of convergence, namely, at terminal level (one device fits all), at service level (convergence of traditional fixed, mobile, and broadcast services), and at transport and network level with a common and standardized set of protocols and at access layer thanks to the harmonic coexistence of different radio technologies.     Visual Targeted Advertisement System Based on User Profiling and Content Consumption for Mobile Broadcasting Television

    Content personalisation is one of the main aims of the mobile media delivery business models, as a new way to improve the user’s experience. In broadcasting networks, the content is sent “one to many”, so a complete personalisation where the user may select any content is not possible. But using the mobile bidirectional return channel (e.g. UMTS connection) visual targeted advertising can be performed in a simple way: by off-line storing the advertisement for selectively replacing the normal broadcasted advertisement. In fact, these concepts provide powerful methods to increase the value of the service, mainly in mobile environments. In this article we present a novel intelligent content personalisation system for targeted advertising over mobile broadcasting networks and terminals, based on user profiling and clustering, as a new solution where the use of content personalisation represents the competitive advantage over traditional advertising

    Context-Aware DVB-H Service Software Framework

    Kontekstilla tarkoitetaan tietoa, jota voidaan käyttää jonkin kokonaisuuden tilanteen luonnehtimiseen. Kontekstitietoinen järjestelmä hyödyntää tätä kontekstia tuottaakseen merkityksellistä tietoa ja/tai palveluita järjestelmän käyttäjälle. Kontekstitietoisuus on yhä olennaisempi käsite tulevaisuuden mobiilipalveluissa ja -sovelluksissa. Personointi on myös olennainen käsite: sitä käytetään tarjotun sisällön ja käyttäjän kiinnostusten väliseen vertailuun. Mobiilipalveluntarjoajat tarvitsevat edullisia sisällönlähetystapoja. Eräs mahdollinen ratkaisu tähän on DVB-H-teknologian käyttö. DVB-H on digitaali-TV-spesifikaatio, joka on suunniteltu käytettäväksi mobiiliympäristöissä. DVB-H:n avulla voidaan tavoittaa suuri joukko asiakkaita erittäin kustannustehokkaasti. Kontekstitietoisuuden ja DVB-H-teknologian yhdistäminen mobiilipalveluksi on potentiaalisesti merkittävä skenaario: tämän kaltaisen palvelun käyttäjät pystyisivät kuluttamaan juuri sellaista sisältöä, jota he tarvitsevat ja josta he ovat kiinnostuneita; toisaalta palveluntarjoajat hyötyvät huomattavasti tästä rahallisesti. Edellä kuvattuun skenaarioon perustuen tässä diplomityössä esitetään i) kehitetty kontekstitietoisen DVB-H-palvelun ohjelmistokehys ja ii) referenssitoteutus, joka tehtiin ohjelmistokehyksen suunnittelun validoimiseksi. Tutkimuskysymys oli seuraavanlainen: millä tavoin kontekstitietoisuutta ja personointia voidaan hyödyntää DVB-H:n avulla välitetyn sisällön suosittelemiseksi käyttäjille. Kehitetty ohjelmistokehys suunniteltiin aiempaan tutkimukseen ja kontekstitietoisten mobiilipalveluiden ja -sovelluksien kehittämissuosituksiin perustuviin vaatimuksiin nojautuen. Ongelmat, jotka liittyvät kontekstitietoisuuden hyödyntämiseen DVB-H:ssa, käsiteltiin myös ohjelmistokehyksen kehittämisen täydentämiseksi. Referenssitoteutuksen vaatimusten mukainen toiminta validoitiin testiskenaarioilla. Skenaarioista saatujen tulosten avulla kontekstitietoisen DVB-H-palvelun kehittäjät voivat edelleen parantaa ohjelmistokehyksen toimintaa. Skenaariot osoittavat, että kontekstitietoisen mobiilisuosittelupalvelun kehittäminen DVB-H:lle ei ole vain mahdollista mutta myös suotavaa.Context is any information that can be used to characterize the situation of an entity. Context-aware system uses this context to provide relevant information and/or services to user. Context-awareness is a concept, which is increasingly both prevalent and essential in mobile services and applications. Additionally, personalization is a relevant concept in the field of mobile services. It is used to match the offered content and services to user's personal preferences. Mobile service providers require affordable content delivery methods. One viable alternative is DVB-H, a digital TV specification, which is specifically designed for mobile environments. Utilizing broadcasting, DVB-H is able to serve large amounts of customers in extremely cost-efficient way. Combining context-awareness with DVBH is potentially a remarkable scenario: users of this kind of service are able to consume content specific to their needs and preferences, while service providers gain maximal profits due to the inexpensive DVB-H delivery network. Based on this scenario, this Thesis presents i) a context-aware DVB-H service software framework that was developed and ii) a reference implementation, which was actualized to validate the framework design. The fundamental research question was: in what way can context-awareness and personalization be utilized in recommending DVB-H-mediated content to users. The developed framework was designed based on the requirements derived from earlier work related to context-aware system architectures and on guidelines related to designing context-aware mobile services and applications. DVB-H-specific context-awareness problems were considered to complete the design. The functioning of the reference implementation was confirmed with test scenarios, which validate the set requirements and provide valuable insights for the future developers of Context-Aware DVB-H Service. The scenarios validate that it is possible and even beneficial to create a context-aware mobile recommendation service, whose target content delivery medium is DVB-H

It is motivated by the large amount and diversity of media contents, together with the ubiquity and multiple connectivity capabilities of modern consumption devices. This paper presents an end-to-end platform for the preparation, delivery, and synchronized consumption of related hybrid (broadcast/broadband) media contents on a single device and/or on multiple close-by devices (i.e., a multi-device scenario). It is compatible with the latest version of the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) standard (version 2.0.1). Additionally, it provides adaptive and efficient solutions for key issues not specified in that standard, but that are necessary to successfully deploy hybrid and multidevice media services. Moreover, apart from MPEG-DASH and HTML5, which are the broadband technologies adopted by HbbTV, the platform also provides support for using HTTP Live Streaming and Real-time Transport Protocol and its companion RTP Control Protocol broadband technologies. The presented platform can provide support for many hybrid media services. In this paper, in order to evaluate it, the use case of multi-device and multi-view TV service has been selected.
