    An interpreter advantage in executive functions? A systematic review

    The aim of this systematic literature review was to answer the question of which executive function is most affected by interpreter training and experience. We used the 'unity and diversity' framework of executive functions to distinguish between three executive components: Response and Distractor Inhibition, Shifting, and Updating. Among the seventeen studies included in the review, we only found evidence for an interpreter advantage on Shifting and Updating, but with a different pattern for each of these. With regard to Updating, groups of interpreters scored better than comparison groups, but general trend in longitudinal studies did not show an improvement for interpreter trainees. In contrast, for Shifting, scores improved as a result of interpreting training. Our systematic review stresses the importance of understanding the diversity of executive processes when investigating the relationship between interpreting and cognitive performance

    Meaning and words in the conference interpreter’s mind – effects of interpreter training and experience in a semantic priming study

    The aim of the study was to examine how interpreter training and experience influence word recognition and cross-linguistic connections in the bilingual mental lexicon. Sixty-eight professional interpreters, interpreter trainees (tested at the beginning and end of their training) and bilingual controls were asked to complete a semantic priming study. Priming is a psycholinguistic research method used to examine connections between words and languages in the mind. Data analysis conducted by means of linear mixed models revealed that advanced trainees recognised words faster than beginners, but were not outperformed by professionals. A priming effect was found only in the L1-L2 direction, suggesting similar asymmetries between languages irrespective of the interpreting experience. It is the first study to adopt a priming paradigm and a longitudinal design to examine the interpreters’ mental lexicon. The study shows that word recognition is faster due to interpreter training, but is not modulated further by interpreting experience

    The interpreter advantage in executive functions—A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Given the heavy cognitive load inherent in language interpreting, interpreters may develop cognitive advantages from managing frequent switching of linguistic codes and working modes. Based on a systematic review of executive functions of inhibiting, shifting and working memory (WM) updating by Nour et al. (2020) and meta-analysis of working memory by Wen and Dong (2019) and Mellinger and Hanson (2019), this research follows the PICOS framework and the PRISMA guideline to synthesize findings from 98 tasks of 29 original studies from International and Chinese databases with a cut-off date of 1st October, 2020. Substantial evidence for an interpreter advantage in shifting was found, but not for inhibition or updating. The meta-analysis showed 1) a moderate to high effect in shifting (g = 0.68, seven WCST effects; g = -0.32, eight switching cost effects); 2) no effect in inhibiting (g = 0.13, six Stroop effects); 3) mixed effects in WM updating. Subgroup analysis on WM updating revealed significant training effects from within-group comparisons (g = 0.58, five 2-back effects; g = 0.71, two L2 listening span effects), but insignificant difference from between-group comparisons (g = -0.03 , five 2-back effects; g = 0.18, five L2 listening span effects ). More reproducible behavioral research with scientific and consistent designs is needed for a clearer understanding of the relationship between interpreting experience and EFs

    The Effects of Multilingualism on Brain Structure, Language Control and Language Processing

    This chapter reviews a small but growing body of research that examines neuroplasticity stemming from multilingualism, specifically discussing some similarities and differences in brain structure and function stemming from in processing three or more languages, as a departure from bilingualism. The evidence comes from studies using magnetic resonance imaging to examine patterns of grey matter structure across cortical and subcortical regions, and aspects of white matter microstructure. This chapter also highlights the functional activation and temporal information of various processes that occur during language processing in multilinguals, while accounting for the influence of language background factors. It then discusses conflicting and agreeing evidence in the literature and attempts to consolidate the findings with suggestions based on contemporary frameworks such as the Dynamic Restructuring Model (Pliatsikas, 2020). In closing, the chapter highlights gaps and pose questions for future research directions in the field of multilingualism and neuroplasticity

    Predictors of ear-voice span, a corpus-based study with special reference to sex

    This paper reports on a study on Ear-Voice Span (EVS) carried out on corpus data drawn from the European Parliament Interpreting Corpus Ghent, where sex is included as a predictor alongside several other variables. Ear-Voice Span is considered to be an indicator of cognitive processes in simultaneous interpreting and has therefore been selected to determine whether potential cognitive sex differences trigger different EVS patterns in men and women. Differences between men and women are reported in individual studies for tasks that are crucial to interpreting (Aerts, 2003; Kimura & Seal, 2003; Loonstra et al., 2001; Maitland et al., 2004 among others). However, meta-analyses tend to show that the reported cognitive differences between the sexes are exaggerated. This study uses corpus-based research methods to analyse the EVS of male and female interpreters in the European Parliament against the background of other known predictors of EVS. The data sample consists of 180 source texts and interpretations in six language pairs. The hypothesis was not confirmed as no sex differences were found. This research project helped identify relevant predictors of EVS: delivery rate, languages and interpreter’s disfluencies

    The role of manual gestures in second language comprehension: a simultaneous interpreting experiment

    Manual gestures and speech form a single integrated system during native language comprehension. However, it remains unclear whether this hold for second language (L2) comprehension, more specifically for simultaneous interpreting (SI), which involves comprehension in one language and simultaneous production in another. In a combined mismatch and priming paradigm, we presented Swedish speakers fluent in L2 English with multimodal stimuli in which speech was congruent or incongruent with a gesture. A picture prime was displayed before the stimuli. Participants had to decide whether the video was related to the prime, focusing either on the auditory or the visual information. Participants performed the task either during passive viewing or during SI into their L1 Swedish (order counterbalanced). Incongruent stimuli yielded longer reaction times than congruent stimuli, during both viewing and interpreting. Visual and audio targets were processed equally easily in both activities. However, in both activities incongruent speech was more disruptive for gesture processing than incongruent gesture was for speech processing. Thus, the data only partly supports the expected mutual and obligatory interaction of gesture and speech in L2 comprehension. Interestingly, there were no differences between activities suggesting that the language comprehension component in SI shares features with other (L2) comprehension tasks

    We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to longitudinally examine brain plasticity arising from long-term, intensive simultaneous interpretation training. Simultaneous interpretation is a bilingual task with heavy executive control demands. We compared brain responses observed during simultaneous interpretation with those observed during simultaneous speech repetition (shadowing) in a group of trainee simultaneous interpreters, at the beginning and at the end of their professional training program. Age, sex and language-proficiency matched controls were scanned at similar intervals. Using multivariate pattern classification, we found distributed patterns of changes in functional responses from the first to second scan that distinguished the interpreters from the controls. We also found reduced recruitment of the right caudate nucleus during simultaneous interpretation as a result of training. Such practice-related change is consistent with decreased demands on multilingual language control as the task becomes more automatized with practice. These results demonstrate the impact of simultaneous interpretation training on the brain functional response in a cerebral structure that is not specifically linguistic, but that is known to be involved in learning, in motor control, and in a variety of domain-general executive functions. Along with results of recent studies showing functional and structural adaptations in the caudate nuclei of experts in a broad range of domains, our results underline the importance of this structure as a central node in expertise-related networks
