A Framework for an Automated Compilation System for Reconfigurable Architectures
The advent of the Field Programmable Gate Array has allowed the implementation of runtime reconfigurable computer systems. These systems are capable of configuring their hardware to provide custom hardware support for software applications. Since these architectures can be reconfigured during operation, they are able to provide hardware support for a variety of applications, without removal from the system. The Air Force is currently investigating reconfigurable architectures for avionics and signal processing applications. This thesis investigates the problem of automating the application development process for reconfigurable architectures. The lack of automated development support is a major limiting factor in the use of these systems. This thesis creates a framework for a reconfigurable compiler, which automatically implements a single high level language specification as a reconfigurable hardware/software application. The major tasks in the process are examined, and possible methods for implementation are investigated. A prototype reconfigurable compiler has been developed to demonstrate the feasibility of important concepts, and to uncover additional areas of difficulty
ONNX-to-Hardware Design Flow for the Generation of Adaptive Neural-Network Accelerators on FPGAs
Neural Networks (NN) provide a solid and reliable way of executing different
types of applications, ranging from speech recognition to medical diagnosis,
speeding up onerous and long workloads. The challenges involved in their
implementation at the edge include providing diversity, flexibility, and
sustainability. That implies, for instance, supporting evolving applications
and algorithms energy-efficiently. Using hardware or software accelerators can
deliver fast and efficient computation of the \acp{nn}, while flexibility can
be exploited to support long-term adaptivity. Nonetheless, handcrafting an NN
for a specific device, despite the possibility of leading to an optimal
solution, takes time and experience, and that's why frameworks for hardware
accelerators are being developed. This work-in-progress study focuses on
exploring the possibility of combining the toolchain proposed by Ratto et al.,
which has the distinctive ability to favor adaptivity, with approximate
computing. The goal will be to allow lightweight adaptable NN inference on
FPGAs at the edge. Before that, the work presents a detailed review of
established frameworks that adopt a similar streaming architecture for future
comparison.Comment: Accepted for presentation at the CPS workshop 2023

Modelling and Automated Implementation of Optimal Power Saving Strategies in Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architectures
This paper focuses on how to efficiently reduce power consumption in coarse-grained reconfigurable designs, to allow their effective adoption in heterogeneous architectures supporting and accelerating complex and highly variable multifunctional applications. We propose a design flow for this kind of architectures that, besides their automatic customization, is also capable of determining their optimal power management support. Power and clock gating implementation costs are estimated in advance, before their physical implementation, on the basis of the functional, technological, and architectural parameters of the baseline design. Experimental results, on 90 and 45 nm CMOS technologies, demonstrate that the proposed approach guides the designer towards optimal implementation
Embedded electronic systems driven by run-time reconfigurable hardware
Abstract
This doctoral thesis addresses the design of embedded electronic systems based on run-time reconfigurable hardware technology –available through SRAM-based FPGA/SoC devices– aimed at contributing to enhance the life quality of the human beings. This work does research on the conception of the system architecture and the reconfiguration engine that provides to the FPGA the capability of dynamic partial reconfiguration in order to synthesize, by means of hardware/software co-design, a given application partitioned in processing tasks which are multiplexed in time and space, optimizing thus its physical implementation –silicon area, processing time, complexity, flexibility, functional density, cost and power consumption– in comparison with other alternatives based on static hardware (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). The design flow of such technology is evaluated through the prototyping of several engineering applications (control systems, mathematical coprocessors, complex image processors, etc.), showing a high enough level of maturity for its exploitation in the industry.
