    Perspective-aware texture analysis and synthesis

    Get PDF
The original publication is available at www.springerlink.comInternational audienceThis paper presents a novel texture synthesis scheme for anisotropic 2D textures based on perspective feature analysis and energy optimization. Given an example texture, the synthesis process starts with analyzing the texel (TEXture ELement) scale variations to obtain the perspective map (scale map). Feature mask and simple user-assisted scale extraction operations including slant and tilt angles assignment and scale value editing are applied. The scale map represents the global variations of the texel scales in the sample texture. Then, we extend 2D texture optimization techniques to synthesize these kinds of perspectively featured textures. The non-parametric texture optimization approach is integrated with histogram matching, which forces the global statics of the texel scale variations of the synthesized texture to match those of the example. We also demonstrate that our method is well-suited for image completion of a perspectively featured texture region in a digital photo

    Coplanar Repeats by Energy Minimization

This paper proposes an automated method to detect, group and rectify arbitrarily-arranged coplanar repeated elements via energy minimization. The proposed energy functional combines several features that model how planes with coplanar repeats are projected into images and captures global interactions between different coplanar repeat groups and scene planes. An inference framework based on a recent variant of α\alpha-expansion is described and fast convergence is demonstrated. We compare the proposed method to two widely-used geometric multi-model fitting methods using a new dataset of annotated images containing multiple scene planes with coplanar repeats in varied arrangements. The evaluation shows a significant improvement in the accuracy of rectifications computed from coplanar repeats detected with the proposed method versus those detected with the baseline methods.Comment: 14 pages with supplemental materials attache

Design and implementation of an integrated surface texture information system for design, manufacture and measurement

    Get PDF
The optimised design and reliable measurement of surface texture are essential to guarantee the functional performance of a geometric product. Current support tools are however often limited in functionality, integrity and efficiency. In this paper, an integrated surface texture information system for design, manufacture and measurement, called “CatSurf”, has been designed and developed, which aims to facilitate rapid and flexible manufacturing requirements. A category theory based knowledge acquisition and knowledge representation mechanism has been devised to retrieve and organize knowledge from various Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) documents in surface texture. Two modules (for profile and areal surface texture) each with five components are developed in the CatSurf. It also focuses on integrating the surface texture information into a Computer-aided Technology (CAx) framework. Two test cases demonstrate design process of specifications for the profile and areal surface texture in AutoCAD and SolidWorks environments respectively

Discrete Flavor Symmetry, Dynamical Mass Textures, and Grand Unification

Discrete flavor symmetry is explored for an intrinsic property of mass matrix forms of quarks and leptons. In this paper we investigate the S3 permutation symmetry and derive the general forms of mass matrices in various types of S3 theories. We also exhibit particular realizations of previous ansatze of mass matrices, which have often been applied in the literature to the standard model Yukawa sector. Discrete flavor symmetry is also advantageous for vanishing matrix elements being dynamically generated in the vacuum of scalar potential. This is due to the fact that group operations are discrete. While zero elements themselves do not explain mass hierarchies, we introduce an abelian flavor symmetry. A non-trivial issue is whether successful quantum numbers can be assigned so that they are compatible with other (non-abelian) flavor symmetries. We show typical examples of charge assignments which not only produce hierarchical orders of mass eigenvalues but also prohibit non-renormalizable operators which disturb the hierarchies in first-order estimation. As an explicit application, a flavor model is constructed in grand unification scheme with S3 and U(1) (or Z_N) flavor symmetries.Comment: 40 pages, references adde

Wetland mapping from digitized aerial photography

    Get PDF
Computer assisted interpretation of small scale aerial imagery was found to be a cost effective and accurate method of mapping complex vegetation patterns if high resolution information is desired. This type of technique is suited for problems such as monitoring changes in species composition due to environmental factors and is a feasible method of monitoring and mapping large areas of wetlands. The technique has the added advantage of being in a computer compatible form which can be transformed into any georeference system of interest
