    Formal functional test designs with a test representation language

    The application of the category-partition method to the test design phase of hardware, software, or system test development is discussed. The method provides a formal framework for reducing the total number of possible test cases to a minimum logical subset for effective testing. An automatic tool and a formal language were developed to implement the method and produce the specification of test cases

    The construction of oracles for software testing

    Software testing is important throughout the software life cycle. Testing is the part of the software development process where a computer program is subject to specific conditions to show that the problem meets its intended design. Building a testing oracle is one part of software testing. An oracle is an external mechanism which can be used to check test output for correctness. The characteristics of available oracles have a dominating influence on the cost and quality of software testing. In this thesis, methods of constructing oracles are investigated and classified. There are three kinds of method of constructing oracles: the pseudo-oracle approach, oracles using attributed grammars and oracles based on formal specification. This thesis develops a method for constructing an oracle, based on the Z specification language. A specification language can describe the correct syntax and semantics of software. The contextual part of a specification describes all the legal input to the program and the semantics part describes the meaning of the given input data. Based on this idea, an oracle is constructed and a prototype is implemented according to the method proposed in the thesis

    A supportive environment for the management of software testing

    This dissertation describes research undertaken on the management of software testing. A support environment for the management of software testing, entitled SEMST, is presented. The research approach involves the investigation of software configuration management and its application to the testing process; the study of software testing techniques and methods; the exploration of the significance of software testing management; a survey of related work; the development and analysis of the requirements for SEMST; its implementation and an assessment. The current version of SEMST is a prototype built on the top of Unix and RCS on a Sun workstation. It is able to maintain all versions of specifications, test cases and programs, as well as to manage the relationships between these components

    Model-based passive testing of safety-critical components

    Passive testing is a complementary technique to active testing. For some types of systems, for example dynamic or adaptive distributed systems which are able to re-configure themselves at runtime in response to changes in their environments, exhaustive active testing before deployment is either theoretically impossible or practically not feasible. For such types of systems the additional application of the technique of passive testing is recommendable. However, a comprehensive theory and taxonomy of methods and techniques for model-based passive testing does –as far as we know– not yet exist and is from today’s perspective still very much a topic for future research in this domain. For this reason the presentation of the topic in this chapter is very much example-based such as to provide the reader with some first intuitions about what model-based passive testing is, what kinds of techniques could be used to implement it, and what could be some typical application scenarios for model-based passive testing in the domains of software systems, hardware systems, as well as embedded software+hardware systems.Note: Section 5 of our chapter, as well as several Figures and a number of Acknowledgments, which will appear in the above-mentioned book, are OMITTED in this pre-print version.http://www.crcpress.com/product/isbn/978143981845
