    The paper studies the performance of the new fluid jet actuator based on the novel principle of the generation of fluid jet, which has been presented in [Z. Travnicek, A.I. Fedorchenko, A.-B. Wang, Enhancement of synthetic jets by means of an integrated valve-less fluid pump. Part I. Design of the actuator, Sens. Actuators A, 120 (2005) 232-240]. The fluid jet actuator consists of a synthetic jet actuator and a valve-less pump. The resulting periodical fluid jet is intrinsically non-zero-net-mass-flux, in contrast to the traditional synthetic jet. The numerical results have been compared with the laboratory experiments comprising phase-locked smoke visualization and time-mean velocity measurements. The results have confirmed the satisfactory performance of the actuator

    A two-stage traveling-wave thermoacoustic electric generator with loudspeakers as alternators

    This paper presents the design, construction and tests of a traveling-wave thermoacoustic electric generator. A two-stage travelling-wave thermoacoustic engine converts thermal energy to acoustic power. Two low-impedance linear alternators (i.e., audio loudspeakers) were installed to extract and convert the engine’s acoustic power to electricity. The coupling mechanism between the thermoacoustic engine and alternators has been systematically studied numerically and experimentally, hence the optimal locations for installing the linear alternators were identified to maximize the electric power output and/or the thermal-to-electric conversion efficiency. A ball valve was used in the loop to partly correct the acoustic field that was altered by manufacturing errors. A prototype was built based on this new concept, which used pressurized helium at 1.8 MPa as the working gas and operated at a frequency of about 171 Hz. In the experiment, a maximum electric power of 204 W when the hot end temperature of the two regenerators reaches 512℃ and 452℃, respectively. A maximum thermal-to-electric efficiency of 3.43% was achieved when the hot end temperature of the two regenerators reaches 597℃ and 511℃, respectively. The research results presented in this paper demonstrate that multi-stage travelling-wave thermoacoustic electricity generator has a great potential for developing inexpensive electric generators

    Active Noise Control Using Modally Tuned Phase-Compensated Filters

    An active noise control device or an active noise absorber (ANA) that is based on either resonant 2nd - order or 4th - order Butterworth filters is developed and demonstrated. This control method is similar to structural positive position feedback (PPF) control, with two exceptions: 1) acoustic transducers (microphone and speaker) can not be truly colocated, and 2) the acoustic actuator (loudspeaker) has significant dynamics that can affect performance and stability. Acoustic modal control approaches are typically not sought, however, there are a number of applications where controlling a few room modes is adequate. A model of a duct with speakers at each end is developed and used to demonstrate the control method, including the impact of the speaker dynamics. An all-pass filter is used to provide phase compensation and improve controller performance. Two companion experimental studies validated the simulation results. A single mode case using a resonant band-pass filter demonstrated nearly 10 dB of control in the first duct, while a multimodal case using two 4th - order Butterworth band-pass filters show both 10 dB of reduction in the fundamental mode and nearly 8.0 dB in the second

    Infinite non-causality in active cancellation of random noise

    Active cancellation of broadband random noise requires the detection of the incoming noise with some time advance. In an duct for example this advance must be larger than the delays in the secondary path from the control source to the error sensor. In this paper it is shown that, in some cases, the advance required for perfect noise cancellation is theoretically infinite because the inverse of the secondary path, which is required for control, can include an infinite non-causal response. This is shown to be the result of two mechanisms: in the single-channel case (one control source and one error sensor), this can arise because of strong echoes in the control path. In the multi-channel case this can arise even in free field simply because of an unfortunate placing of sensors and actuators. In the present paper optimal feedforward control is derived through analytical and numerical computations, in the time and frequency domains. It is shown that, in practice, the advance required for significant noise attenuation can be much larger than the secondary path delays. Practical rules are also suggested in order to prevent infinite non-causality from appearing

    Noise characterization in millimeter sized micromanipulation systems.

    International audienceE cient and dexterous manipulation of very small (micrometer and millimeter sized) objects require the use of high precision micromanipulation systems. The accuracy of the positioning is nevertheless limited by the noise due to vibrations of the end e ectors making it di cult to achieve precise micrometer and nanometer displacements to grip small objects. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the sources of noise and to take it into account in dynamic models of micromanipulation systems. Environmental noise is studied considering the following sources of noise: ground motion and acoustic noises. Each source of noise is characterized in di erent environmental conditions and a separate description of their e ects is investigated on micromanipulation systems using millimeter sized cantilevers as end e ectors. Then, using the nite di erence method (FDM), a dynamic model taking into account studied noises is used. Ground motion is described as a disturbance transmitted by the clamping to the tip of the cantilever and acoustic noises as external uniform and orthogonal waves. For model validation, an experimental setup including cantilevers of di erent lengths is designed and a high resolution laser interferometer is used for vibration measurements. Results show that the model allows a physical interpretation about the sources of noise and vibrations in millimeter sized micromanipulation systems leading to new perspectives for high positioning accuracy in robotics micromanipulation through active noise control

    Nonlinearity compensation of low-frequency loudspeaker response using internal model controller

    This paper presents the nonlinearity compensation of low-frequency loudspeaker response. The loudspeaker is dedicated to measuring the response of Electret Condenser Microphone which operated in the arterial pulse region. The nonlinearity of loudspeaker has several problems which cause the nonlinearity behaviour consists of the back electromagnetic field, spring, mass of cone and inductance. Nonlinearity compensation is done using the Internal Model Controller with voltage feedback linearization. Several signal tests consist of step, impulse and sine wave signal are examined on different frequencies to validate the effectiveness of the design. The result showed that the Internal Mode Controller can achieve the high-speed response with a small error value

    ACTIVE NOISE CONTROL USING CARBON NANOTUBE THERMOPHONES: CASE STUDY FOR AN AUTOMOTIVE HVAC APPLICATION

    The goal of this project was to reduce the overall noise levels emitted by the HVAC components in a vehicle’s cabin. More specifically, the feasibility of achieving this goal using two key technologies was investigated. The first of these technologies, Active Noise Control (ANC), is a noise attenuation technique that relies on destructive interference that “cancels” unwanted noise. Typically used in situations where physical constraints prevent passive attenuation techniques from being used, ANC is known for its high size-to-effectiveness ratio. This benefit cannot be gained without a cost however; the complexity of ANC systems is significantly higher than their passive counterparts. This is due to the signal processing and actuator designs required. These actuators often take the form of moving-coil loudspeakers which, while effective, are often bulky. Because of this they are difficult to “drop in” to an existing system. This is where the second technology comes in. Carbon Nanotube (CNT) Thermophones are solid-state speakers that operate by using rapid heat fluctuations to create sound. Called the “thermoacoustic effect,” (TE) the theory of this operating principle dates to the turn of the 20th century. Useful demonstration of TE did not occur until 2008, however, when researchers first developed the first CNT thermophones. The hallmark characteristics of these transducers are their small size and flexible nature. Compared to traditional loudspeakers they have a much smaller form factor and are more versatile in terms of where they can be placed in a cramped system. The marriage of CNT transducers to ANC technology shows promise in improving the application space and ease of installation of ANC systems. Getting these two to cooperate, however, is not without challenges. A case study for this union is presented here; the application space being the ducted environment of vehicle HVAC systems
