    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by ongoing problems in social interaction and communication, and engagement in repetitive behaviors. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 1 in 68 children in the United States has ASD. Mounting evidence shows that many of these individuals display an interest in social interaction with computers and robots and, in general, feel comfortable spending time in such environments. It is known that the subtlety and unpredictability of people’s social behavior are intimidating and confusing for many individuals with ASD. Computerized learning environments and robots, however, prepare a predictable, dependable, and less complicated environment, where the interaction complexity can be adjusted so as to account for these individuals’ needs. The first phase of this dissertation presents an artificial-intelligence-based tutoring system which uses an interactive computer character as a pedagogical agent (PA) that simulates a human tutor teaching sight word reading to individuals with ASD. This phase examines the efficacy of an instructional package comprised of an autonomous pedagogical agent, automatic speech recognition, and an evidence-based instructional procedure referred to as constant time delay (CTD). A concurrent multiple-baseline across-participants design is used to evaluate the efficacy of intervention. Additionally, post-treatment probes are conducted to assess maintenance and generalization. The results suggest that all three participants acquired and maintained new sight words and demonstrated generalized responding. The second phase of this dissertation describes the augmentation of the tutoring system developed in the first phase with an autonomous humanoid robot which serves the instructional role of a peer for the student. In this tutoring paradigm, the robot adopts a peer metaphor, where its function is to act as a peer. With the introduction of the robotic peer (RP), the traditional dyadic interaction in tutoring systems is augmented to a novel triadic interaction in order to enhance the social richness of the tutoring system, and to facilitate learning through peer observation. This phase evaluates the feasibility and effects of using PA-delivered sight word instruction, based on a CTD procedure, within a small-group arrangement including a student with ASD and the robotic peer. A multiple-probe design across word sets, replicated across three participants, is used to evaluate the efficacy of intervention. The findings illustrate that all three participants acquired, maintained, and generalized all the words targeted for instruction. Furthermore, they learned a high percentage (94.44% on average) of the non-target words exclusively instructed to the RP. The data show that not only did the participants learn nontargeted words by observing the instruction to the RP but they also acquired their target words more efficiently and with less errors by the addition of an observational component to the direct instruction. The third and fourth phases of this dissertation focus on physiology-based modeling of the participants’ affective experiences during naturalistic interaction with the developed tutoring system. While computers and robots have begun to co-exist with humans and cooperatively share various tasks; they are still deficient in interpreting and responding to humans as emotional beings. Wearable biosensors that can be used for computerized emotion recognition offer great potential for addressing this issue. The third phase presents a Bluetooth-enabled eyewear – EmotiGO – for unobtrusive acquisition of a set of physiological signals, i.e., skin conductivity, photoplethysmography, and skin temperature, which can be used as autonomic readouts of emotions. EmotiGO is unobtrusive and sufficiently lightweight to be worn comfortably without interfering with the users’ usual activities. This phase presents the architecture of the device and results from testing that verify its effectiveness against an FDA-approved system for physiological measurement. The fourth and final phase attempts to model the students’ engagement levels using their physiological signals collected with EmotiGO during naturalistic interaction with the tutoring system developed in the second phase. Several physiological indices are extracted from each of the signals. The students’ engagement levels during the interaction with the tutoring system are rated by two trained coders using the video recordings of the instructional sessions. Supervised pattern recognition algorithms are subsequently used to map the physiological indices to the engagement scores. The results indicate that the trained models are successful at classifying participants’ engagement levels with the mean classification accuracy of 86.50%. These models are an important step toward an intelligent tutoring system that can dynamically adapt its pedagogical strategies to the affective needs of learners with ASD

    How to keep drivers engaged while supervising driving automation? A literature survey and categorization of six solution areas

    This work aimed to organise recommendations for keeping people engaged during human supervision of driving automation, encouraging a safe and acceptable introduction of automated driving systems. First, heuristic knowledge of human factors, ergonomics, and psychological theory was used to propose solution areas to human supervisory control problems of sustained attention. Driving and non-driving research examples were drawn to substantiate the solution areas. Automotive manufacturers might (1) avoid this supervisory role altogether, (2) reduce it in objective ways or (3) alter its subjective experiences, (4) utilize conditioning learning principles such as with gamification and/or selection/training techniques, (5) support internal driver cognitive processes and mental models and/or (6) leverage externally situated information regarding relations between the driver, the driving task, and the driving environment. Second, a cross-domain literature survey of influential human-automation interaction research was conducted for how to keep engagement/attention in supervisory control. The solution areas (via numeric theme codes) were found to be reliably applied from independent rater categorisations of research recommendations. Areas (5) and (6) were addressed by around 70% or more of the studies, areas (2) and (4) in around 50% of the studies, and areas (3) and (1) in less than around 20% and 5%, respectively. From the past few years, it also became an attractive research area in visual computing. From the computational point of view, by far speech and text have been the most considered cues of information for analyzing personality. However, recently there has been an increasing interest from the computer vision community in analyzing personality from visual data. Recent computer vision approaches are able to accurately analyze human faces, body postures and behaviors, and use these information to infer apparent personality traits. Because of the overwhelming research interest in this topic, and of the potential impact that this sort of methods could have in society, we present in this paper an up-to-date review of existing vision-based approaches for apparent personality trait recognition. We describe seminal and cutting edge works on the subject, discussing and comparing their distinctive features and limitations. Future venues of research in the field are identified and discussed.     Cyber Operator Competencies: The Role of Cognitive Competencies in Cyber Operator Practice and Education

These can be viewed in the relevant journals/books, and in the printed thesis.The theme of this thesis is the role of cognitive competencies in cyber operator practice and education. Cyber operator practice is a new field of research where the importance and attention is growing rapidly. Research has accumulated a solid amount of knowledge about the technical skills required by a cyber operator. However, less is known about the cognitive competencies that support cyber operator proficiency. In order to gain insight into the cognitive demands of cyber operators, the cognitions of young cyber officers(1) attending the Norwegian Defence Cyber Academy have been studied. Findings contributes to the development of theory and evidence-based knowledge needed to develop educational guidelines for the cyber operator workforce. This dissertation proposes and take steps towards validation of a conceptual framework, The Hybrid Space, that describes the cognitive work environment of military cyber operators. The Hybrid Space conceptual framework is introduced in the first article of this thesis and is used in all parts of the study. Methodological contributions include a method and a software to collect quantitative data on cyber operators’ cognitive focus and assess cognitive agility. Cognitive agility is proposed as a competence and a measure of cyber operator performance. Empirical data collected during a cyber defence exercise support our theoretical assumption and helps to further develop The Hybrid Space conceptual framework. Findings indicate that knowledge and understanding of cyberspace as a domain of operations and the cognitive competencies supporting cyber operator proficiency are limited. Cognitive agility is proposed as a cognitive competency and is associated with higher levels of selfregulation. These findings suggest that cognitive competencies can indeed support cyber operator performance. This thesis therefore contributes to cyber operator practice and education by suggesting that education and training would benefit from including the development of cognitive competencies alongside the technical education and training needed to become a cyber operator. In this way, this thesis adds new insight and perspective into the novel area of cyber operator practice. The results provide the first indications that cyber operator performance can be supported by the development of cognitive competencies during education. 1 Cyber officer and cyber operator are used interchangeably throughout the articles and this extended abstract.     DAMSS-2018 is the jubilee 10th international workshop on data analysis methods for software systems, organized in Druskininkai, Lithuania, at the end of the year. The same place and the same time every year. Ten years passed from the first workshop. History of the workshop starts from 2009 with 16 presentations. The idea of such workshop came up at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and the Lithuanian Computer Society supported this idea. This idea got approval both in the Lithuanian research community and abroad. The number of this year presentations is 81. The number of registered participants is 113 from 13 countries. In 2010, the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics became a member of Vilnius University, the largest university of Lithuania. In 2017, the institute changes its name into the Institute of Data Science and Digital Technologies. This name reflects recent activities of the institute. The renewed institute has eight research groups: Cognitive Computing, Image and Signal Analysis, Cyber-Social Systems Engineering, Statistics and Probability, Global Optimization, Intelligent Technologies, Education Systems, Blockchain Technologies. The main goal of the workshop is to introduce the research undertaken at Lithuanian and foreign universities in the fields of data science and software engineering. Annual organization of the workshop allows the fast interchanging of new ideas among the research community. Even 11 companies supported the workshop this year. This means that the topics of the workshop are actual for business, too. Topics of the workshop cover big data, bioinformatics, data science, blockchain technologies, deep learning, digital technologies, high-performance computing, visualization methods for multidimensional data, machine learning, medical informatics, ontological engineering, optimization in data science, business rules, and software engineering. Seeking to facilitate relations between science and business, a special session and panel discussion is organized this year about topical business problems that may be solved together with the research community.     Evaluating platform architectures within ecosystems: modeling the relation to indirect value

    This thesis establishes a framework for understanding the role of a supplier within the context of a business ecosystem. Suppliers typically define their business in terms of capturing value by meeting the demands of direct customers. However, the framework recognises the importance of understanding how a supplier captures indirect value by meeting the demands of indirect customers. These indirect customers increasingly use a supplier’s products and services over time in combination with those of other suppliers. This type of indirect demand is difficult for the supplier to anticipate because it is asymmetric to their own definition of demand. Customers pay the costs of aligning products and services to their particular needs by expending time and effort, for example, to link disparate social technologies or to coordinate healthcare services to address their particular condition. The accelerating tempo of variation in individual needs increases the costs of aligning products and services for customers. A supplier’s ability to reduce its indirect customers’ costs of alignment represents an opportunity to capture indirect value. The hypothesis is that modelling the supplier's relationship to indirect demands improves the supplier’s ability to identify opportunities for capturing indirect value. The framework supports the construction and analysis of such models. It enables the description of the distinct forms of competitive advantage that satisfy a given variety of indirect demands, and of the agility of business platforms supporting that variety of indirect demands. Models constructed using this framework are ‘triply-articulated’ in that they articulate the relationships among three sub-models: (i) the technical behaviours generating products and services, (ii) the social entities managing their supply, and (iii) the organisation of value defined by indirect customers’ demands. The framework enables the derivation from such a model of a layered analysis of the risks to which the capture of indirect value exposes the supplier, and provides the basis for an economic valuation of the agility of the supporting platform architectures. The interdisciplinary research underlying the thesis is based on the use of tools and methods developed by the author in support of his consulting practice within large and complex organisations. The hypothesis is tested by an implementation of the modeling approach applied to suppliers within their ecosystems in three cases: (a) UK Unmanned Airborne Systems, (b) NATO Airborne Warning and Control Systems, both within their respective theatres of operation, and (c) Orthotics Services within the UK's National Health Service. These cases use this implementation of the modeling approach to analyse the value of platforms, their architectural design choices, and the risks suppliers face in their use. The thesis has implications for the forms of leadership involved in managing such platform-based strategies, and for the economic impact such strategies can have on their larger ecosystem. It informs the design of suppliers’ platforms as system-of-system infrastructures supporting collaborations within larger ecosystems. And the ‘triple-articulation’ of the modelling approach makes new demands on the mathematics of systems modeling

    Media agencies’ business characteristics : Co-creation and co-destruction of value

    Value co-creation as a research topic has received significant attention from marketing and service management scholars. This extended view shifts away from the supplier-centric assumption, as the idea that value creation emerges primarily from providers is becoming obsolete. Instead, there is awareness that external actors, such as clients, play a key part in both co-creation and co-destruction of value. There is a lack of scholarly consideration in terms of understanding value co-creation/co-destruction and their conceptual bridges. More specifically, embedded value co-creation within media businesses is a neglected research topic in media management. In particular, there is scant knowledge of B2B media agencies in the context of value co-creation and co-destruction activities. This thesis fills these gaps by developing a comprehensive picture that considers both the “bright side” of value co-creation and its “dark side”—the co-destruction phenomena—in media agency businesses. It spotlights the associated challenges of value co-creation conceptualization, such as its high level of conceptual abstraction. Hence, practitioners exercise a Datenfelder EPub Bayreuth fine-tuned view to improve their knowledge of interactions and manage the diverse factors of the value co-creation phenomena in the media management context. This dissertation consists of five research papers and highlights two overarching objectives: (i) to conceptualize and explore integrative media agency-client business aspects under novel conceptual perspectives and (ii) to provide empirical evidence that media agency-client relationships create and destroy value in the process of doing business. Specifically, through two conceptual papers, the study presents two interdisciplinary frameworks and sheds light on the subject of value co-creation to provide future research avenues in the media management field. In addition, three empirical papers apply a conceptual provider-client framework as their research lens, using qualitative data to examine media agency businesses. This improves understanding of media agency businesses and adds knowledge to the value co-creation/co-destruction phenomena in the media management literature. The results indicate co-creation and co-destruction are embedded and occur in many different day-to-day B2B media situations. The thesis provides valuable suggestions for media managers that can improve their knowledge regarding media agency-client direct interactions. This work is consistent with the current requirement for more practical and management relevant media management research.Ko-Kreation von Werten steht im Fokus des Forschungsinteresses von Marketing und Dienstleistungsmanagement. Diese Perspektive rĂŒckt von der Anbieterzentrierung ab, da die Vorstellung, dass die Wertschöpfung in erster Linie von den Anbietern ausgeht, zunehmend an Bedeutung verliert. Stattdessen setzt sich vermehrt die Erkenntnis durch, dass externe Akteure, wie z.B. Kunden, eine SchlĂŒsselrolle sowohl bei der gemeinsamen Wertschöpfung als auch bei der gemeinsamen Zerstörung von Werten spielen. Jedoch mangelt es an wissenschaftlichen Überlegungen, die zu einem besseren VerstĂ€ndnis von Ko-Kreation/Ko-Zerstörung und ihren konzeptuellen BrĂŒcken fĂŒhren können. Im Medienmanagement stellt insbesondere die Ko-Kreation/Ko-Zerstörung in Medienunternehmen ein vernachlĂ€ssigtes Forschungsthema dar; es existiert nur wenig Wissen ĂŒber B2B-Medienagenturen im Kontext der Ko-Kreation und Ko-Zerstörung. Die vorliegende Arbeit schließt diese ForschungslĂŒcken, indem sie ein umfassendes Bild zeichnet, das sowohl die "helle Seite" der Wertschöpfungskooperation als auch deren "dunkle Seite” - das PhĂ€nomen der Ko-Zerstörung - in Medienagenturen berĂŒcksichtigt. Dabei rĂŒcken die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen bei der Konzeptualisierung der gemeinsamen Wertschöpfung in den Mittelpunkt, wie z.B. der hohe konzeptuelle Abstraktionsgrad. Auf diese Weise können Praktiker ihr Wissen ĂŒber Interaktionen verbessern und die verschiedenen Faktoren der Wertschöpfungskooperation im Umfeld des Medienmanagements steuern. Die Dissertation besteht aus fĂŒnf Forschungsarbeiten und verfolgt zwei ĂŒbergeordnete Ziele: (i) die Konzeptualisierung und Erforschung integrativer GeschĂ€ftsaspekte zwischen Medienagenturen und Kunden unter neuartigen konzeptuellen Gesichtspunkten und (ii) den empirischen Nachweis, dass im Verlauf des GeschĂ€ftsprozesses durch die Beziehungen zwischen Medienagenturen und Kunden Werte sowohl erschaffen als auch zerstört werden. In zwei konzeptionellen BeitrĂ€gen stellt die Studie interdisziplinĂ€re Forschungsrahmen vor und eröffnet erkenntnisfördernde Einblicke in das Datenfelder EPub Bayreuth Thema der Ko-Kreation von Werten, um kĂŒnftige Forschungsperspektiven im Bereich des Medienmanagements aufzuzeigen. DarĂŒber hinaus wird in drei empirischen Arbeiten ein konzeptueller Anbieter-Kunden-Rahmen als Forschungsinstrument eingesetzt und qualitative Daten zur Untersuchung von Medienagenturen herangezogen. Dadurch entsteht ein verbessertes VerstĂ€ndnis von Medienagenturen und ein Erkenntnisgewinn hinsichtlich der PhĂ€nomene Ko-Kreation und Ko-Zerstörung in der Medienmanagement-Literatur.
