Intrusion Detection System using Bayesian Network Modeling
Computer Network Security has become a critical and important issue due to ever increasing cyber-crimes. Cybercrimes are spanning from simple piracy crimes to information theft in international terrorism. Defence security agencies and other militarily related organizations are highly concerned about the confidentiality and access control of the stored data. Therefore, it is really important to investigate on Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to detect and prevent cybercrimes to protect these systems. This research proposes a novel distributed IDS to detect and prevent attacks such as denial service, probes, user to root and remote to user attacks. In this work, we propose an IDS based on Bayesian network classification modelling technique. Bayesian networks are popular for adaptive learning, modelling diversity network traffic data for meaningful classification details. The proposed model has an anomaly based IDS with an adaptive learning process. Therefore, Bayesian networks have been applied to build a robust and accurate IDS. The proposed IDS has been evaluated against the KDD DAPRA dataset which was designed for network IDS evaluation. The research methodology consists of four different Bayesian networks as classification models, where each of these classifier models are interconnected and communicated to predict on incoming network traffic data. Each designed Bayesian network model is capable of detecting a major category of attack such as denial of service (DoS). However, all four Bayesian networks work together to pass the information of the classification model to calibrate the IDS system. The proposed IDS shows the ability of detecting novel attacks by continuing learning with different datasets. The testing dataset constructed by sampling the original KDD dataset to contain balance number of attacks and normal connections. The experiments show that the proposed system is effective in detecting attacks in the test dataset and is highly accurate in detecting all major attacks recorded in DARPA dataset. The proposed IDS consists with a promising approach for anomaly based intrusion detection in distributed systems. Furthermore, the practical implementation of the proposed IDS system can be utilized to train and detect attacks in live network traffi
IDSGAN: Generative Adversarial Networks for Attack Generation against Intrusion Detection
As an important tool in security, the intrusion detection system bears the
responsibility of the defense to network attacks performed by malicious
traffic. Nowadays, with the help of machine learning algorithms, the intrusion
detection system develops rapidly. However, the robustness of this system is
questionable when it faces the adversarial attacks. To improve the detection
system, more potential attack approaches should be researched. In this paper, a
framework of the generative adversarial networks, IDSGAN, is proposed to
generate the adversarial attacks, which can deceive and evade the intrusion
detection system. Considering that the internal structure of the detection
system is unknown to attackers, adversarial attack examples perform the
black-box attacks against the detection system. IDSGAN leverages a generator to
transform original malicious traffic into adversarial malicious traffic. A
discriminator classifies traffic examples and simulates the black-box detection
system. More significantly, we only modify part of the attacks' nonfunctional
features to guarantee the validity of the intrusion. Based on the dataset
NSL-KDD, the feasibility of the model is demonstrated to attack many detection
systems with different attacks and the excellent results are achieved.
Moreover, the robustness of IDSGAN is verified by changing the amount of the
unmodified features.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
AI Solutions for MDS: Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Misuse Detection and Localisation in Telecommunication Environments
This report considers the application of Articial Intelligence (AI) techniques to
the problem of misuse detection and misuse localisation within telecommunications
environments. A broad survey of techniques is provided, that covers inter alia
rule based systems, model-based systems, case based reasoning, pattern matching,
clustering and feature extraction, articial neural networks, genetic algorithms, arti
cial immune systems, agent based systems, data mining and a variety of hybrid
approaches. The report then considers the central issue of event correlation, that
is at the heart of many misuse detection and localisation systems. The notion of
being able to infer misuse by the correlation of individual temporally distributed
events within a multiple data stream environment is explored, and a range of techniques,
covering model based approaches, `programmed' AI and machine learning
paradigms. It is found that, in general, correlation is best achieved via rule based approaches,
but that these suffer from a number of drawbacks, such as the difculty of
developing and maintaining an appropriate knowledge base, and the lack of ability
to generalise from known misuses to new unseen misuses. Two distinct approaches
are evident. One attempts to encode knowledge of known misuses, typically within
rules, and use this to screen events. This approach cannot generally detect misuses
for which it has not been programmed, i.e. it is prone to issuing false negatives.
The other attempts to `learn' the features of event patterns that constitute normal
behaviour, and, by observing patterns that do not match expected behaviour, detect
when a misuse has occurred. This approach is prone to issuing false positives,
i.e. inferring misuse from innocent patterns of behaviour that the system was not
trained to recognise. Contemporary approaches are seen to favour hybridisation,
often combining detection or localisation mechanisms for both abnormal and normal
behaviour, the former to capture known cases of misuse, the latter to capture
unknown cases. In some systems, these mechanisms even work together to update
each other to increase detection rates and lower false positive rates. It is concluded
that hybridisation offers the most promising future direction, but that a rule or state
based component is likely to remain, being the most natural approach to the correlation
of complex events. The challenge, then, is to mitigate the weaknesses of
canonical programmed systems such that learning, generalisation and adaptation
are more readily facilitated
FPGA hardware acceleration framework for anomaly-based intrusion detection system in IoT
This study proposes a versatile framework for realtime Internet of Things (IoT) network intrusion detection using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) on heterogeneous hardware. With the increase in the volume of exchanged data, IoT networks' security has become a crucial issue. Anomaly-based intrusion detection systems (IDS) using machine learning have recently gained increased popularity due to their generation ability to detect new attacks. However, the deployment of anomaly-based AI-assisted IDS for IoT devices is computationally expensive. In this paper, a hierarchical decision-making approach for IDS is proposed and evaluated on the new IoT-23 dataset, with improved accuracy over the software-based methods. The inference engine is implemented on the Xilinx FPGA System on a Chip (SoC) hardware platform for high performance, high accuracy attack detection (more than 99.43%). For the resulting implemented design, the processing time of the ANN model on FPGA with an xc7z020clg400 device is 6.6 times and 40.5 times faster than GPU Quadro M2000 and CPU E5-2640 2.60GHz, respectively

Efficient intrusion detection scheme based on SVM
The network intrusion detection problem is the focus of current academic research. In this paper, we propose to use Support Vector Machine (SVM) model to identify and detect the network intrusion problem, and simultaneously introduce a new optimization search method, referred to as Improved Harmony Search (IHS) algorithm, to determine the parameters of the SVM model for better classification accuracy. Taking the general mechanism network system of a growing city in China between 2006 and 2012 as the sample, this study divides the mechanism into normal network system and crisis network system according to the harm extent of network intrusion. We consider a crisis network system coupled with two to three normal network systems as paired samples. Experimental results show that SVMs based on IHS have a high prediction accuracy which can perform prediction and classification of network intrusion detection and assist in guarding against network intrusion

Cloud computing provides scalable, virtualized on-demand services to the end users with greater flexibility and lesser infrastructural investment. These services are provided over the Internet using known networking protocols, standards and formats under the supervision of different managements. Existing bugs and vulnerabilities in underlying technologies and legacy protocols tend to open doors for intrusion. This paper, surveys different intrusions affecting availability, confidentiality and integrity of Cloud resources and services. It examines proposals incorporating Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) in Cloud and discusses various types and techniques of IDS and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), and recommends IDS/IPS positioning in Cloud architecture to achieve desired security in the next generation networks
