Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns

Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

Tune in the Bible: A Computer-based Adult-learning System

Computers have been utilized in virtually every arena of American society to convey information and to educate. This project was designed to investigate the adult-learning literature and then produce a computer-based Bible study program that would interest and motivate the user to further investigation of the Bible\u27s contents and message. The adult-learning literature survey yielded significant principles that were applied to the formulation of scripts and storyboards for a computer learning system called Tune in the Bible. This computer program was produced using the IBM development software, Linkway Live! Twelve participants were engaged to review and evaluate the content, effectiveness, and operation of Tune in the Bible. A survey instrument was administered prior to and following their use of the program. Many aspects of the adult-learning model can be successfully transferred to a computer-based learning system. A program that presents the Bible as an interesting and trustworthy guide for life can be successfully used as part of an adult\u27s search for spiritual meaning

Benchmarking level interactivity of Indonesia government university websites

Website interactivity is increasingly essential for higher education institutions in maintaining their relationship with stakeholders. However, limited is known what the level interactivity of a university website is without comparing with other similar educational institutions. Through the use of website content analysis and benchmarking strategy, we evaluate 41 government university website for benchmarking purposes. Base on thirteen interactive criteria, we successfully benchmarked the government university websites and built a-five levels of websites interactivity with different features. Our study highlights that higher level interactivity of website contains more feature that support a two-way communication between university and consumers, while lower level of websites interactivity merely have basic features for communication. The findings suggest the highest level of websites interactivity, the more features they should have. More importantly, the findings suggest web developer to design more interactive features in developing a higher level of website interactivity

Control Shift

The legacy of industrialisation counts only a few decades of being accepted as cultural heritage. The change of perceptions over its connotation and significance, from a menace to historic landscapes to an outstanding historical resource, took place in an era of massive sociocultural and economic upheavals. Those far-reaching developments reshaped both the theory and the practice of heritage conservation. Since the 1970s, new conservation approaches started emerging and being employed, next to the long established strategies of preservation and restoration. Adaptive reuse was included in the repertoire of conservation and quickly gained ground, as a strategy which allowed both the preservation of heritage values and sustainable development. The incorporation of adaptive reuse as an alternative conservation approach marked a noteworthy shift in heritage care. Contemporary conservation seized aiming at the prevention of change. Instead, it embraced it, following the new axiom: ‘Managing change’. This dissertation, positioned in the crossroads of the heritage conservation, architectural and spatial planning fields, focuses on Industrial Heritage Reuse practice in Europe. Despite widely employed in the last half century, Industrial Heritage Reuse still remains particularly challenging and highly confusing, hiding internal and external risks. Those resonate from the conditions of present times, the ambiguities of the contemporary framework of conservation, the embedded dilemmas of the Reuse practice as well as from the particularities of this special heritage group. This vastly complex yet fascinating topic has not yet been studied holistically under the circumstances dictated by the contemporary era. A deeper and broader understanding of the practice has assumed greater urgency in the 21st century, as it is the stepping stone for the enhancement of the practice -a demand that is increasingly stressed by academic and professional circles. The aim of this dissertation is to explore the potential of enhancement of the Industrial Heritage Reuse through the identification and analysis of its influencing Aspects, under the light of the contemporary theoretical conservation concepts, the current demands of the field of practice and the rising challenges of the 21st century context. This research addresses a topical issue, drawing from the concepts of the contemporary theory of conservation, challenging outdated theoretical notions and conventional practical and methodological applications. Furthermore, it sheds light to a hazy and confusing subject, addressing the tensions and the unresolved issues, highlighted by the existing literature on multiple disciplines. It revisits and reinterprets the standing axiom ‘Managing Change’, providing the scientific community with missing answers on the way, the Actors and the criteria based on which this can be achieved. Drawing upon both theory and practice on an international level, this inquiry gives a holistic and multileveled view on the subject under investigation, stimulating further thought and debate. Apart from extending the academic body of knowledge, the intention of this doctoral research is also to become a useful springboard for the practitioners that engage with Industrial Heritage Reuse. In order to achieve that, this dissertation presents an international and retrospective review of Industrial Heritage care, allowing experience drawn from one country to inform approaches on safeguarding via Reuse on other countries. Furthermore, it offers inspiration and raises awareness through the ‘ReIH’ online knowledge platform (http://reindustrialheritage.eu/projects) and the analysis of twenty cases studies of best practice. Lastly, taking into account the pressing issues of sustainability, equality and multilateralism, it offers guidance, providing a much needed alternative framework for the conservation of Industrial Heritage. This framework is capable of practical implementation and can contribute to an enhanced, more responsive, more sustainable, more inclusive, more value-driven and more holistic practice

The social acceptance of wind energy: Where we stand and the path ahead

Social acceptance is a key challenge for the deployment of wind energy and could limit the overall wind resource we are able to exploit to meet climate change targets. Social acceptance can be influenced by a very wide range of factors, including project characteristics, perception of the distribution of costs and benefits, degree of public participation. Perceived impacts of projects on landscapes, property values, health and biodiversity also influence social acceptance. This complexity means that acceptance cannot be addressed through simple fixes such as community benefit funds or just more consultation, but we need a far more fundamental reform of how energy systems engage with communities and citizens.JRC.G.10-Knowledge for Nuclear Security and Safet

On the evolution of conceptual modeling

Since the 1980s the need increased for overcoming idiosyncrasies of approaches to modeling in the various sub-disciplines of computing. The theoretical model of evolution is used in this paper for analyzing how computing and conceptual modeling have changed. It is concluded that computing has changed into a social phenomenon with a technical core and that therefore relying on (formal) model semantics as the sole tool for the discussion of conceptual modeling is no more adequate. A number of language games of computing is identified and the task set to describe these language games to the extent necessary for deciding whether or not they can serve as the foundation of computing

Planning gain in Tower Hamlets

This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.This thesis examines in detail the operation of a planning gain policy in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets between 1971 and 1983, using data obtained from records held at the Borough and observations of the practice. The practice of planning gain is set into the broader context of planning and the still broader social and political context. The existing literature and definitions of planning gain are critically examined in the light of a theoretical framework which concerns itself with the identification of power and politics within the planning process. The responses made to the practice of planning gain by the Department of the Environment, planning inspectors and the courts are explained and critically analysed to indicate the lack of articulated opposition. The use of planning agreements as a mechanism for the enforcement of planning gain is also examined. Section 52 of the Town and Country Planning Act is analysed, together with the available case law. The use of these agreements in Tower Hamlets is discussed in detail. The schemes examined at Tower Hamlets are presented in full to provide an overall view of the operation of a planning gain policy. Details include the effect of negotiation on the content of schemes and problems of implementation. Comparative material is provided covering the operation of a planning gain system which has legislative recognition in Sydney, Australia. The gift of the code: A culture of an operating system

“The Gift of the Code” explores the boundaries between technology and sociality, computers and cultures. Based on long-term ethnographic research among users and developers of GNU/Linux Operating System, this work analyses how Linux developers and users consume, create and exchange an as much technical as cultural discursive construction of sociality. Like a modern-day kula ring, the Linux code is analysed in terms of a gift: one cannot keep it for one’s self, it contains obligations and a promise of future reciprocity. It is a collective gift of the self-ascribed Hackers that come from different geographic places and meet in lines of code, socializing by exchanging ideas about the code and about themselves. This work shows by what means the computer hackers of Linux, abiding to the original definition of the word, actively constitute their community using discourse: language, e-mail, internal meritocratic hierarchies based on technical ability and ethics of the group, boundaries of exclusion and inclusion. This project is about power relations, resistance networks and the hegemony of a techno-scientific self-indulgence of some post-residents of an imagined cyber-West. Equally, it is about the giving of gifts, hacker culture and the ‘fun’ of hacking, creating and maintaining a ‘guerrilla’ operating system.
