New Architecture for EIA-709.1 Protocol Implementation
This paper proposes a new architecture for EIA-709.1protocol implementation. The protocol is conventionallyimplemented with the proprietary processor and language,Neuron chip and Neuron C, respectively, where the Neuron chipconsists of 3 processors inside. The proposed architecture usesonly one general purpose processor and general ANSI C toimplement the layers of EIA-709.1 except the physical layer. Thedata link, network, and other layers are implemented onto oneRISC processor, ARM. Specifically, the data link layer of theEIA-709.1 based on predictive p-persistent CSMA/CA isimplemented. The interface between the transceiver based onpower line communication and the data link layer based on theARM is described. As a conclusion, this research shows theimprovement of performance and the compatibility with theexisting Neuron chip
Utilising a fieldbus protocol in a water quality monitoring system
This thesis presents a new water quality monitoring system developed at the University of Durham in conjunction with Partech Instruments Ltd. The system uses a fieldbus protocol to create an open, distributed control network, replacing the dedicated products currently offered. Echelon LonWorks has been used to create three nodes: a suspended solids sensor, a general-purpose interactive monitoring tool, and a universal relay setpoint module. When connected, these nodes provide a means of activating relays when the suspended solids level reaches a definable level, while providing a numerical display for the operator. The sensor may be calibrated for a number of different applications. The sensor uses infra-a-red light to monitor the light absorption and 90 scatter within the solution. By dynamically adjusting the intensity of the emitted light, the sensor is able to increase its range over conventional devices. Signal processing, linearization and calibration operations are carried out within the sensor software. The final measurement is communicated as a LonWorks network variable, allowing the sensor to be treated as an interoperable device. Several third-party products have been connected to the network and a high degree of interoperability demonstrated. Three network management software packages have been investigated, and their suitability assessed. The final prototype system shows the power, flexibility and cost-saving that a fieldbus protocol can provide in an industrial control environment
PROPOSED MIDDLEWARE SOLUTION FOR RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED DISTRIBUTED EMBEDDED NETWORKS
The explosion in processing power of embedded systems has enabled distributed embedded networks to perform more complicated tasks. Middleware are sets of encapsulations of common and network/operating system-specific functionality into generic, reusable frameworks to manage such distributed networks. This thesis will survey and categorize popular middleware implementations into three adapted layers: host-infrastructure, distribution, and common services. This thesis will then apply a quantitative approach to grading and proposing a single middleware solution from all layers for two target platforms: CubeSats and autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). CubeSats are 10x10x10cm nanosatellites that are popular university-level space missions, and impose power and volume constraints. Autonomous UAVs are similarly-popular hobbyist-level vehicles that exhibit similar power and volume constraints. The MAVLink middleware from the host-infrastructure layer is proposed as the middleware to manage the distributed embedded networks powering these platforms in future projects. Finally, this thesis presents a performance analysis on MAVLink managing the ARM Cortex-M 32-bit processors that power the target platforms

Power line network automation over IP
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityA smart home contains many kinds of devices, sensors and user interfaces. In order
for these to communicate with each other and share information and processing power
they need to be connected together. Thus, seamless networking and device
interconnectivity is a fundamental requirement for a smart home. Unfortunately, this requirement for compliance and compatibility still presents a difficult obstacle as there are numerous competing standards and technologies available
today and some devices are completely without communication interface. Current state-of-the-art smart homes are implemented with home based on Web servers in order to surpass the difficulties. Also, a more sophisticated implementation is based on middleware. These two methodologies are expensive to implement. Our proposed system is cost-effective and does not require Web servers or any special hardware and has low complexity. The novelty and the achievement of the thesis is the integration of homogeneous networks through IP. In addition, the system was built-in terms of software and hardware based on a new protocol

Detection in distributed sensor networks
This thesis describes detection and communication algorithms for distributed sensor networks. In the first part of the thesis, we investigate a new architecture for distributed binary hypothesis detection by employing a Collision Resolution Algorithm (CRA), where all local sensors share a common channel to communicate with the decision fusion center. This architecture is important in the design of sensor fields, where a large number of distributed sensors share a single "emergency" channel. In the second part of the thesis, we discuss an industrial application of such a distributed detection system, namely, the LonWorks control network. We concentrate on the predictive p-persistent CSMA protocol implemented in the MAC layer of LonWorks protocol, which was proposed by the Echelon Corporation in the 1980s. In order to model this algorithm, we expand the CRA model developed in the first part to analyze variable-length messages. Predictions of the model are compared to an OPNET simulator of LonWorks, and to resultsfrom a physical network. Finally, we propose a direction-of-arrival (DOA) algorithm for sensor networks. It employs an improved polynomial rooting method using unitary transformations.Ph.D., Electrical Engineering -- Drexel University, 200
Implementace komunikačního protokolu BACnet v AC500
This work deals with the design and implementation of a BMS system communication network for data centers. BACnet and OPC Classic communication protocols were used for the implementation of the network. The aim of the work was to create an implementation-efficient and modular solution that can be applied in the future for the implementation of more complex solutions of BMS systems. The theoretical part contains a technical overview of the application area and an analysis of the use of BACnet protocol in industrial control systems. The result of the practical part is a communication system based on BACnet protocol, which is used to exchange data between two AC500 PLCs produced by ABB com-pany. The communication system also includes a distributed control system 800xA manufactured by ABB, which has the function of remote monitoring and control, archiving of measured data, and alarm diagnostics of the monitored systems.
