    Enhanced control strategy of full-bridge modular multilevel converter

    This paper describes a control approach that allows the cell capacitor voltages of the full-bridge modular multilevel converter (FB-MMC) to be controlled independent of the input dc link voltage. Moreover, this control approach offers the possibility of operating FB-MMC from bi-polar dc link voltages; thus, creating new possibilities for building generic hybrid dc grids with reversible dc link voltage, where the conventional line commutated current source converters can operate alongside voltage source converters. Furthermore, the presented control approach improves the dc fault ride-through of the FB-MMC compared to existing approaches. This could be achieved by an active control of the arm currents and cell capacitor voltages, and full exploitation of the FB-MMC redundant switch states. Operation of the FB-MMC with reversible DC link voltage and decoupled control of the cell capacitor voltages from the dc link voltage are demonstrated using simulations. The major findings and implications of this work are highlighted

    Isolated Single-stage Power Electronic Building Blocks Using Medium Voltage Series-stacked Wide-bandgap Switches

    The demand for efficient power conversion systems that can process the energy at high power and voltage levels is increasing every day. These systems are to be used in microgrid applications. Wide-bandgap semiconductor devices (i.e. Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices) are very promising candidates due to their lower conduction and switching losses compared to the state-of-the-art Silicon (Si) devices. The main challenge for these devices is that their breakdown voltages are relatively lower compared to their Si counterpart. In addition, the high frequency operation of the wide-bandgap devices are impeded in many cases by the magnetic core losses of the magnetic coupling components (i.e. coupled inductors and/or high frequency transformers) utilized in the power converter circuit. Six new dc-dc converter topologies are propose. The converters have reduced voltage stresses on the switches. Three of them are unidirectional step-up converters with universal input voltage which make them excellent candidates for photovoltaic and fuel cell applications. The other three converters are bidirectional dc-dc converters with wide voltage conversion ratios. These converters are very good candidates for the applications that require bidirectional power flow capability. In addition, the wide voltage conversion ratios of these converters can be utilized for applications such as energy storage systems with wide voltage swings

    High-voltage pulse generators incorporating modular multilevel converter sub-modules

    Recent research established the effectiveness of applying a pulsed electric field to deactivate harmful microorganisms (such as bacteria and E. coli). Successful deactivation is achieved by lethal electroporation; a process that produces electric pores in the biological cell membrane of the harmful microorganisms when subjected to high-voltage (HV) pulses. The HV pulses are designed to create pores beyond a critical size at which the biological cell can reseal.;In contrast when applying non-lethal electroporation, the cell-membrane survives after the electroporation process. This is required, for example, when inserting protein cells in the cell-membrane. In both lethal and non-lethal electroporation, HV pulses in the kilo-Volt range (1-100 kV) with durations ranging between nanoseconds and milliseconds are required.;This thesis proposes nine pulse generator (PG) topologies based on power electronic devices and modular multilevel converter sub-modules. The proposed topologies are divided into two main groups namely: PGs fed from a HV DC supply and PGs fed from an LV DC supply. The first group presents a new family of HV DC fed topologies that improve the performance of existing HV DC fed PGs, such as flexible pulse-waveform generation and full utilisation of the DC link voltage.;The second group is dedicated to a new family of LV DC fed PG topologies which have flexible pulse-waveform generation, controlled operation efficiency, and high voltage gain.;All the proposed PG topologies share the important aspect in the newly developed HV PGs, that is modularity, which offers redundancy and robust pulse generation operation.;The presented PG topologies are supported by theoretical analysis, simulations, and experimentation.Recent research established the effectiveness of applying a pulsed electric field to deactivate harmful microorganisms (such as bacteria and E. coli).     Analysis of a new family of DC-DC converters with input-parallel output-series structure

    There is an increasing trend of development and installation of switching power supplies due to their highly efficient power conversion, fast power control and high quality power conditioning for applications such as renewable energy integration and energy storage management systems. In most of these applications, high voltage conversion ratio is required. However, basic switching converters have limited voltage conversion ratio. There has been much research into development of high gain power converters. While most of the reported topologies focus on high gain and high efficiency, in this thesis, the input and output ripple currents and reliability are also considered to derive a new converter structure suitable for high step-up voltage conversion applications. High ripple currents and voltages at the input and output of dc-dc converters are not desirable because they may affect the operation of the dc source or the load. A number of converters operating in an interleaved manner can reduce these ripples. This thesis proposes a dc/dc switching converter structure which is capable of reducing the ripple problem through interleaved action, in addition to high gain and high efficiency voltage conversion. The thesis analyses the proposed converter structure through a dual buck-boost converter topology. The structure allows different converter topologies and combinations of them for different applications to be configured. The study begins with a motivation and a literature review of dc/dc converters. The new family of high step-up converters is introduced with an interleaved buck-boost as an example, followed by small-signal analysis. Experimental verifications, conclusions and future work are discussed

    Review of Electric Vehicle Charging Technologies, Configurations, and Architectures

    Electric Vehicles (EVs) are projected to be one of the major contributors to energy transition in the global transportation due to their rapid expansion. The EVs will play a vital role in achieving a sustainable transportation system by reducing fossil fuel dependency and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, high level of EVs integration into the distribution grid has introduced many challenges for the power grid operation, safety, and network planning due to the increase in load demand, power quality impacts and power losses. An increasing fleet of electric mobility requires the advanced charging systems to enhance charging efficiency and utility grid support. Innovative EV charging technologies are obtaining much attention in recent research studies aimed at strengthening EV adoption while providing ancillary services. Therefore, analysis of the status of EV charging technologies is significant to accelerate EV adoption with advanced control strategies to discover a remedial solution for negative grid impacts, enhance desired charging efficiency and grid support. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the current deployment of EV charging systems, international standards, charging configurations, EV battery technologies, architecture of EV charging stations, and emerging technical challenges. The charging systems require a dedicated converter topology, a control strategy and international standards for charging and grid interconnection to ensure optimum operation and enhance grid support. An overview of different charging systems in terms of onboard and off-board chargers, AC-DC and DC-DC converter topologies, and AC and DC-based charging station architectures are evaluated

    Switched capacitor converters:a new approach for high power applications

    High-power, high-voltage and high voltage-conversion ratio DC-DC converters are an enabling technology for offshore DC grids of the future. These converters are required to interface between offshore wind farms and an offshore DC grid and a key design issue is the size and weight of the converter, which significantly impacts the cost of the associated off-shore platform. In addition to this application, some rural communities, particularly in Canada, Australia and South Africa,which are located far away from the electrical power generators, can take the advantages of this technology by tapping into existing HVDC transmission line using a high voltage-conversion ratio DC-DC converter. The work described in this thesis is an investigation as to how such DC-DC converters may be realised for these applications. First a review of existing DC-DC converters was carried out to assess their suitability for the target applications. A classification of DC-DC converters into Direct and Indirect converters was proposed in this work based on the manner in which the energy is transferred from the input to the output terminal of the converter. Direct DC-DC converters, particularly Switched Capacitor(SC) converters are more promising for high-voltage, high-power and high voltage-conversion ratio applications, since the converter can interface between the low-voltage and the high-voltage terminals using low-voltage and low-power power electronic modules. Existing SC topologies were examined to identify the most promising candidate circuits for the target applications. Four SC synthesis techniques were proposed in order to derive new SC circuits from existing topologies. A new 2-Leg Ladder, modular 2-Leg Ladder and bi-pole 2-Leg Ladder were devised, which had significant benefits in terms of size and weight when compared with existing circuits. A scaled power 1 kW converter was built in the laboratory in order to validate the analysis and compare the performance of the new 2-Leg ladder circuit against a conventional Ladder circuit, where it was shown that the new circuit had higher efficiency, smaller size and lower output voltage ripple than the Ladder converter

    A multi-modular second life hybrid battery energy storage system for utility grid applications

    The modern grid system or the smart grid is likely to be populated with multiple distributed energy sources, e.g. wind power, PV power, Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV). It will also include a variety of linear and nonlinear loads. The intermittent nature of renewable energies like PV, wind turbine and increased penetration of Electric Vehicle (EV) makes the stable operation of utility grid system challenging. In order to ensure a stable operation of the utility grid system and to support smart grid functionalities such as, fault ride-through, frequency response, reactive power support, and mitigation of power quality issues, an energy storage system (ESS) could play an important role. A fast acting bidirectional energy storage system which can rapidly provide and absorb power and/or VARs for a sufficient time is a potentially valuable tool to support this functionality. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are one of a range suitable energy storage system because it can provide and absorb power for sufficient time as well as able to respond reasonably fast. Conventional BESS already exist on the grid system are made up primarily of new batteries. The cost of these batteries can be high which makes most BESS an expensive solution. In order to assist moving towards a low carbon economy and to reduce battery cost this work aims to research the opportunities for the re-use of batteries after their primary use in low and ultra-low carbon vehicles (EV/HEV) on the electricity grid system. This research aims to develop a new generation of second life battery energy storage systems (SLBESS) which could interface to the low/medium voltage network to provide necessary grid support in a reliable and in cost-effective manner. The reliability/performance of these batteries is not clear, but is almost certainly worse than a new battery. Manufacturers indicate that a mixture of gradual degradation and sudden failure are both possible and failure mechanisms are likely to be related to how hard the batteries were driven inside the vehicle. There are several figures from a number of sources including the DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Control) and Arup and Cenex reports indicate anything from 70,000 to 2.6 million electric and hybrid vehicles on the road by 2020. Once the vehicle battery has degraded to around 70-80% of its capacity it is considered to be at the end of its first life application. This leaves capacity available for a second life at a much cheaper cost than a new BESS Assuming a battery capability of around 5-18kWhr (MHEV 5kWh - BEV 18kWh battery) and approximate 10 year life span, this equates to a projection of battery storage capability available for second life of >1GWhrs by 2025. Moreover, each vehicle manufacturer has different specifications for battery chemistry, number and arrangement of battery cells, capacity, voltage, size etc. To enable research and investment in this area and to maximize the remaining life of these batteries, one of the design challenges is to combine these hybrid batteries into a grid-tie converter where their different performance characteristics, and parameter variation can be catered for and a hot swapping mechanism is available so that as a battery ends it second life, it can be replaced without affecting the overall system operation. This integration of either single types of batteries with vastly different performance capability or a hybrid battery system to a grid-tie 3 energy storage system is different to currently existing work on battery energy storage systems (BESS) which deals with a single type of battery with common characteristics. This thesis addresses and solves the power electronic design challenges in integrating second life hybrid batteries into a grid-tie energy storage unit for the first time. This study details a suitable multi-modular power electronic converter and its various switching strategies which can integrate widely different batteries to a grid-tie inverter irrespective of their characteristics, voltage levels and reliability. The proposed converter provides a high efficiency, enhanced control flexibility and has the capability to operate in different operational modes from the input to output. Designing an appropriate control system for this kind of hybrid battery storage system is also important because of the variation of battery types, differences in characteristics and different levels of degradations. This thesis proposes a generalised distributed power sharing strategy based on weighting function aims to optimally use a set of hybrid batteries according to their relative characteristics while providing the necessary grid support by distributing the power between the batteries. The strategy is adaptive in nature and varies as the individual battery characteristics change in real time as a result of degradation for example. A suitable bidirectional distributed control strategy or a module independent control technique has been developed corresponding to each mode of operation of the proposed modular converter. Stability is an important consideration in control of all power converters and as such this thesis investigates the control stability of the multi-modular converter in detailed. Many controllers use PI/PID based techniques with fixed control parameters. However, this is not found to be suitable from a stability point-of-view. Issues of control stability using this controller type under one of the operating modes has led to the development of an alternative adaptive and nonlinear Lyapunov based control for the modular power converter. Finally, a detailed simulation and experimental validation of the proposed power converter operation, power sharing strategy, proposed control structures and control stability issue have been undertaken using a grid connected laboratory based multi-modular hybrid battery energy storage system prototype. The experimental validation has demonstrated the feasibility of this new energy storage system operation for use in future grid applications
