    Using 2-Opt based evolution strategy for travelling salesman problem

    Harmony search algorithm that matches the (µ+ 1) evolution strategy, is a heuristic method simulated by the process of music improvisation. In this paper, a harmony search algorithm is directly used for the travelling salesman problem. Instead of conventional selection operators such as roulette wheel, the transformation of real number values of harmony search algorithm to order index of vertex representation and improvement of solutions are obtained by using the 2-Opt local search algorithm. Then, the obtained algorithm is tested on two different parameter groups of TSPLIB. The proposed method is compared with classical 2-Opt which randomly started at each step and best known solutions of test instances from TSPLIB. It is seen that the proposed algorithm offers valuable solutions

    Solving no-wait two-stage flexible flow shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machines and rework time by the adjusted discrete Multi Objective Invasive Weed Optimization and fuzzy dominance approach

    Purpose: Adjusted discrete Multi-Objective Invasive Weed Optimization (DMOIWO) algorithm, which uses fuzzy dominant approach for ordering, has been proposed to solve No-wait two-stage flexible flow shop scheduling problem. Design/methodology/approach: No-wait two-stage flexible flow shop scheduling problem by considering sequence-dependent setup times and probable rework in both stations, different ready times for all jobs and rework times for both stations as well as unrelated parallel machines with regards to the simultaneous minimization of maximum job completion time and average latency functions have been investigated in a multi-objective manner. In this study, the parameter setting has been carried out using Taguchi Method based on the quality indicator for beater performance of the algorithm. Findings: The results of this algorithm have been compared with those of conventional, multi-objective algorithms to show the better performance of the proposed algorithm. The results clearly indicated the greater performance of the proposed algorithm. Originality/value: This study provides an efficient method for solving multi objective no-wait two-stage flexible flow shop scheduling problem by considering sequence-dependent setup times, probable rework in both stations, different ready times for all jobs, rework times for both stations and unrelated parallel machines which are the real constraints.Peer Reviewe

    Benchmarking Permutation Flow Shop Problem: Adaptive and Enumerative Approaches Implementations via Novel Threading Techniques

    A large number of real-world planning problems are combinatorial optimization problems which are easy to state and have a finite but usually very large number of feasible solutions. The minimum spanning tree problem and the shortest path problem are some which are solvable through polynomial algorithms. Even though there are other problems such as crew scheduling, vehicle routing, production planning, and hotel room operations which have no properties such as to solve the problem with polynomial algorithms. All these problems are NP-hard. The permutation flow shop problem is also NP-hard problem and they require high computation. These problems are solvable as in the form of the optimal and near-optimal solution. Some approach to get optimal are exhaustive search and branch and bound whereas near optimal are achieved annealing, Genetic algorithm, and other various methods. We here have used different approach exhaustive search, branch and bound and genetic algorithm. We optimize these algorithms to get performance in time as well as get the result closer to optimal. The exhaustive search and branch and bound gives all possible optimal solutions. We here have shown the comparative result of optimal calculation for 10 jobs with varying machine number up to 20. The genetic algorithm scales up and gives results to the instances with a larger number of jobs and machines

    Different Applications of the Genetic Mutation Operator for Symetric Travelling Salesman Problem

    This paper presents the results of an analysis of three algorithms for the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP). The basic steps of genetic algorithms (GAs) and their benefits in solving combinatorial optimization problems are also presented. Moreover, several studies related to TPS and some approaches to its solution are discussed. An optimized version of the standard recursive algorithm for solving TSP using the backtracking method is presented. This algorithm is used to generate optimal solutions concerning the studied graphs. In addition, a standard genetic algorithm for solving TSP and its modification are also presented. The modified algorithm uses the genetic operator mutation in a different way. The results show that the recursive algorithm can be used successfully to solve the TSP for graphs with a small number of vertices, for instance, 25-30. The results of the two GAs were different. The modified GA found the optimal solutions for all tested graphs, while the standard GA found the optimal solutions in only 40% of the cases. These results were obtained for a reasonable time (in seconds), with appropriate values of the control parameters - population size and reproduction number. It appeared that the use of the genetic mutation operator yields better results when applied to identical solutions. If pairs of identical solutions are found in a population, then every second must mutate. The methodology and the conditions for conducting the experiments are described in details

    On the exact solution of the no-wait flow shop problem with due date constraints

    Peer ReviewedThis paper deals with the no-wait flow shop scheduling problem with due date constraints. In the no-wait flow shop problem, waiting time is not allowed between successive operations of jobs. Moreover, the jobs should be completed before their respective due dates; due date constraints are dealt with as hard constraints. The considered performance criterion is makespan. The problem is strongly NP-hard. This paper develops a number of distinct mathematical models for the problem based on different decision variables. Namely, a mixed integer programming model, two quadratic mixed integer programming models, and two constraint programming models are developed. Moreover, a novel graph representation is developed for the problem. This new modeling technique facilitates the investigation of some of the important characteristics of the problem; this results in a number of propositions to rule out a large number of infeasible solutions from the set of all possible permutations. Afterward, the new graph representation and the resulting propositions are incorporated into a new exact algorithm to solve the problem to optimality. To investigate the performance of the mathematical models and to compare them with the developed exact algorithm, a number of test problems are solved and the results are reported. Computational results demonstrate that the developed algorithm is significantly faster than the mathematical models

    Cloud manufacturing refers to a new concept of using centralized cloud computing for manufacturing information systems to support distributed and dynamic collaborative manufacturing environment. The core of cloud manufacturing is to provide service to geographically distributed manufacturers centralized services. This paper introduces a cloud based production scheduling system for sheet metal manufacturing and discusses the requirements of scheduling as a service. A genetic algorithm based scheduling application has been developed to serve distributed manufacturing lines in form of cloud manufacturing.     Integrated capacitated lot sizing and scheduling problems in a flexible flow line

    The lot sizing and scheduling problem in a Flexible Flow Line (FFL) has extensive real-world applications in many industries. An FFL consists of several production stages in series with parallel machines at each stage. The decisions to be taken are the determination of production quantities (lots), machine assignments and production sequences (schedules) on each machine at each stage in an FFL. Lot sizing and scheduling problems are closely interrelated. Solving them separately and then coordinating their interdependencies is often ineffective. However due to their complexity, there is a lack of mathematical modelling and solution procedures in the literature to combine and jointly solve them.Up to now most research has been focused on combining lotsizing and scheduling for the single machine configuration, and research on other configurations like FFL is sparse. This thesis presents several mathematical models with practical assumptions and appropriate algorithms, along with experimental test problems, for simultaneously lotsizing and scheduling in FFL. This problem, called the ‘General Lot sizing and Scheduling Problem in a Flexible Flow Line’ (GLSP-FFL). The objective is to satisfy varying demand over a finite planning horizon with minimal inventory, backorder and production setup costs. The problem is complex as any product can be processed on any machine, but these have different processing rates and sequence-dependent setup times & costs. As a result, even finding a feasible solution of large problems in reasonable time is impossible. Therefore the heuristic solution procedure named Adaptive Simulated Annealing (ASA), with four well-designed initial solutions, is designed to solve GLSP-FFL.A further original contribution of this study is to design linear mixed-integer programming (MILP) formulations for this problem, incorporating all necessary features of setup carryovers, setup overlapping, non-triangular setup while allowing multiple lot production per periods, lot splitting and sequencing through ATSP-adaption based on a variety of subtour elimination
