A generic method for energy-efficient and energy-cost-effective production at the unit process level
Energy Efficient Policies, Scheduling, and Design for Sustainable Manufacturing Systems
Climate mitigation, more stringent regulations, rising energy costs, and sustainable manufacturing are pushing researchers to focus on energy efficiency, energy flexibility, and implementation of renewable energy sources in manufacturing systems. This thesis aims to analyze the main works proposed regarding these hot topics, and to fill the gaps in the literature. First, a detailed literature review is proposed. Works regarding energy efficiency in different manufacturing levels, in the assembly line, energy saving policies, and the implementation of renewable energy sources are analyzed. Then, trying to fill the gaps in the literature, different topics are analyzed more in depth. In the single machine context, a mathematical model aiming to align the manufacturing power required to a renewable energy supply in order to obtain the maximum profit is developed. The model is applied to a single work center powered by the electric grid and by a photovoltaic system; afterwards, energy storage is also added to the power system. Analyzing the job shop context, switch off policies implementing workload approach and scheduling considering variable speed of the machines and power constraints are proposed. The direct and indirect workloads of the machines are considered to support the switch on/off decisions. A simulation model is developed to test the proposed policies compared to others presented in the literature. Regarding the job shop scheduling, a fixed and variable power constraints are considered, assuming the minimization of the makespan as the objective function. Studying the factory level, a mathematical model to design a flow line considering the possibility of using switch-off policies is developed. The design model for production lines includes a targeted imbalance among the workstations to allow for defined idle time. Finally, the main findings, results, and the future directions and challenges are presented
Sustainability in HPC: Vision and Opportunities
Tackling climate change by reducing and eventually eliminating carbon
emissions is a significant milestone on the path toward establishing an
environmentally sustainable society. As we transition into the exascale era,
marked by an increasing demand and scale of HPC resources, the HPC community
must embrace the challenge of reducing carbon emissions from designing and
operating modern HPC systems. In this position paper, we describe challenges
and highlight different opportunities that can aid HPC sites in reducing the

Lot streaming Permutation Flow shop with energy awareness
In this work, the flow shop scheduling problem with energy awareness is approached with lot-streaming strategies. Energy consumption is modeled within the objective function, together with the makespan, by means of a normalized and weighted sum. Thus, reducing energy consumption guides the optimization process. For lot streaming approaches mathematical models are provided and assessed. The results showed that lot-streaming is an efficient strategy to address this problem, allowing to improve both makespan and total energy consumption compared to the problem without lot-streaming. In turn, the selection of processing speeds for each sublot was incorporated, which improved the strategy yielding the best quality solutions.Fil: Florencia D'Amico. Universidad Nacional del Sur. An investigation into minimising total energy consumption and total weighted tardiness in job shops
Manufacturing enterprises nowadays face the challenge of increasing energy prices and requirements to reduce their emissions. Most reported work on reducing manufacturing energy consumption today focuses on the need to improve the efficiency of resources (machines) largely ignoring the potential for energy reducing on the system-level where the operational method can be employed as the energy saving approach. The advantage is clearly that the scheduling and planning approach can also be applied across existing legacy systems and does not require large investment. Therefore, a multi-objective scheduling method is developed in this paper with reducing energy consumption as one of the objectives. This research focuses on classical job shop environment which is widely used in the manufacturing industry. A model for the bi-objectives problem that minimises total electricity consumption and total weighted tardiness is developed and the Non-dominant Sorting Genetic Algorithm is employed as the solution to obtain the Pareto front. A case study based on a modified 10 × 10 job shop is presented to show the effectiveness of the algorithm and to prove the feasibility of the model
Energy-aware coordination of machine scheduling and support device recharging in production systems
Electricity generation from renewable energy sources is crucial for achieving climate targets, including greenhouse gas neutrality. Germany has made significant progress in increasing renewable energy generation. However, feed-in management actions have led to losses of renewable electricity in the past years, primarily from wind energy. These actions aim to maintain grid stability but result in excess renewable energy that goes unused. The lost electricity could have powered a multitude of households and saved CO2 emissions. Moreover, feed-in management actions incurred compensation claims of around 807 million Euros in 2021. Wind-abundant regions like Schleswig-Holstein are particularly affected by these actions, resulting in substantial losses of renewable electricity production. Expanding the power grid infrastructure is a costly and time-consuming solution to avoid feed-in management actions. An alternative approach is to increase local electricity consumption during peak renewable generation periods, which can help balance electricity supply and demand and reduce feed-in management actions. The dissertation focuses on energy-aware manufacturing decision-making, exploring ways to counteract feed-in management actions by increasing local industrial consumption during renewable generation peaks. The research proposes to guide production management decisions, synchronizing a company's energy consumption profile with renewable energy availability for more environmentally friendly production and improved grid stability

application of sustainable manufacturing have been now critically reviewed as important manufacturing trends in the 21st century. The key requirements for carbon emissions reduction in this context are energy efficiency, resource utilization, waste minimization and even the reduction of total carbon footprint. The recent approaches tend to only analyse and evaluate
carbon emission contents of interested engineering systems. However, a systematic approach based on strategic decision making has not been officially defined with no standards or guidelines further formulated yet. The above requirements demand a fundamentally new approach to future applications of sustainable low carbon manufacturing. Energy and resource efficiencies and effectiveness based low carbon manufacturing (EREEbased LCM) is thus proposed in this research. The proposed EREE-based LCM is able to provide the systematic approach for integrating three key elements (energy efficiency, resource utilization and waste minimization) and taking account of them comprehensively in a scientific manner. The proposed approach demonstrates the solution for reducing carbon emissions in
manufacturing systems at both the machine and shop floor levels. An integrated framework has been developed to demonstrate the feasible approach to achieve effective EREE-based LCM at different manufacturing levels including machine, shop floor,
enterprise and supply chains. The framework is established in the matrix form with appropriate tools and methodologies related to the three keys elements at each manufacturing level. The theoretical model for EREE-based LCM is also presented, which consists of three essential elements including carbon dioxide emissions evaluation, an optimization method and waste
reduction methodology. The preliminary experiment and simulations are carried out to evaluate the proposed concept. The modelling of EREE-based LCM has been developed for both the machine and shop floor
levels. At the machine level, the modelling consists of the simulation of energy consumption due to the effect of machining set-up, the optimization model and waste minimization related to the optimized machining set-up. The simulation is established using sugeno type fuzzy logic. The learning method uses on experimental data (cutting trials) while the optimization model is created using mamdani type fuzzy logic with grey relational grade technique. At the shop floor level, the modelling is designed dependent on the cooperation with machine level modelling. The determination of the work assignment including machining set-up depends on fuzzy integer linear programming for several objectives with the evaluation of energy consumption data from
machine level modelling. The simulation method is applied as the part of shop floor level modelling in order to maximize resource utilization and minimize undesired waste. The output from the shop floor level modelling is machine production a planning with preventive plan that can minimize the total carbon footprint. The axiomatic design theory has been applied to generate the comprehensive conceptual model E-R-W-C (energy, resource, waste and carbon footprint) of EREE-based LCM as a generic
perspective of the systematic modelling. The implementation of EREE-based LCM on both the
machine and shop floor levels are demonstrated using MATLAB toolbox and ProModel based simulation. The proposed concept, framework and modelling have been further evaluated and validated through case studies and experimental results.This work is financially supported by The Royal Thai Government

A Linear Programming Model for Renewable Energy Aware Discrete Production Planning and Control
Industrial production in the EU, like other sectors of the economy, is obliged to stop producing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. With its Green Deal, the European Union has already set the corresponding framework in 2019. To achieve Net Zero in the remaining time, while not endangering one's own competitiveness on a globalized market, a transformation of industrial value creation has to be started already today. In terms of energy supply, this means a comprehensive electrification of processes and a switch to fully renewable power generation. However, due to a growing share of renewable energy sources, increasing volatility can be observed in the European electricity market already. For companies, there are mainly two ways to deal with the accompanying increase in average electricity prices. The first is to reduce consumption by increasing efficiency, which naturally has its physical limits. Secondly, an increasing volatile electricity price makes it possible to take advantage of periods of relatively low prices. To do this, companies must identify their energy-intensive processes and design them in such a way as to enable these activities to be shifted in time. This article explains the necessary differentiation between labor-intensive and energy intensive processes. A general mathematical model for the holistic optimization of discrete industrial production is presented. With the help of this MILP model, it is simulated that a flexibilization of energy intensive processes with volatile energy prices can help to reduce costs and thus secure competitiveness while getting it in line with European climate goals. On the basis of real electricity market data, different production scenarios are compared, and it is investigated under which conditions the flexibilization of specific processes is worthwhile
