    Search-based system architecture development using a holistic modeling approach

    This dissertation presents an innovative approach to system architecting where search algorithms are used to explore design trade space for good architecture alternatives. Such an approach is achieved by integrating certain model construction, alternative generation, simulation, and assessment processes into a coherent and automated framework. This framework is facilitated by a holistic modeling approach that combines the capabilities of Object Process Methodology (OPM), Colored Petri Net (CPN), and feature model. The resultant holistic model can not only capture the structural, behavioral, and dynamic aspects of a system, allowing simulation and strong analysis methods to be applied, it can also specify the architectural design space. Both object-oriented analysis and design (OOA/D) and domain engineering were exploited to capture design variables and their domains and define architecture generation operations. A fully realized framework (with genetic algorithms as the search algorithm) was developed. Both the proposed framework and its suggested implementation, including the proposed holistic modeling approach and architecture alternative generation operations, are generic. They are targeted at systems that can be specified using object-oriented or process-oriented paradigm. The broad applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated on two examples. One is the configuration of reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMSs) under multi-objective optimization and the other is the architecture design of a manned lunar landing system for the Apollo program. The test results show that the proposed approach can cover a huge number of architecture alternatives and support the assessment of several performance measures.     Using physical unclonable functions for hardware authentication: a survey

    Physical unclonable functions (PUFs) are drawing a crescent interest in hardware oriented security due to their special characteristics of simplicity and safety. However, their nature as well as early stage of study makes them constitute currently a diverse and non-standardized set for designers. This work tries to establish one organization of existing PUF structures, giving guidelines for their choice, conditioning, and adaptation depending on the target application.     An agent-based self-configuration methodology for modular assembly systems

    Assembly systems today are exposed to market trends that have become increasingly more dynamic and unpredictable, requiring product changes and adjustments which emphasise de need for more flexible systems. The requirement for increased responsiveness has led to the development of new modular concepts which provide the bases for achieving higher system adaptability through increased component/module interchangeability and reusability. The modularization of physical and control infrastructure does, however, only address one aspect of the issue and there is still a lack of appropriate tools and methods to support the rapid configuration and reconfiguration of such systems for changing sets of requirements. This work proposes a new distributed methodology for the configuration and reconfiguration of Modular Assembly Systems (MAS) through the use of agent technology. The new methodology defines a comprehensive model for the structured description of the MAS requirements, equipment modules and the configuration results. This thesis proposes a new agent architecture for the self-configuration of equipment modules into systems based on a given set of requirements, as the core of the self-configuration methodology. This architecture introduces the overall behaviour of the methodology through the definition of agent types, roles and overall interactions. Furthermore this work describes the development of the specific models and methods for the local behaviour of each agent. These enable the actual decision making method for the agents to achieve configuration solutions. This work also reports on a new methodology for the early performance simulation of MAS characteristics that can be used in conjunction with the configuration methodology

    Embedded electronic systems driven by run-time reconfigurable hardware

    Abstract This doctoral thesis addresses the design of embedded electronic systems based on run-time reconfigurable hardware technology –available through SRAM-based FPGA/SoC devices– aimed at contributing to enhance the life quality of the human beings. This work does research on the conception of the system architecture and the reconfiguration engine that provides to the FPGA the capability of dynamic partial reconfiguration in order to synthesize, by means of hardware/software co-design, a given application partitioned in processing tasks which are multiplexed in time and space, optimizing thus its physical implementation –silicon area, processing time, complexity, flexibility, functional density, cost and power consumption– in comparison with other alternatives based on static hardware (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). The design flow of such technology is evaluated through the prototyping of several engineering applications (control systems, mathematical coprocessors, complex image processors, etc.), showing a high enough level of maturity for its exploitation in the industry.Resumen Esta tesis doctoral abarca el diseño de sistemas electrónicos embebidos basados en tecnología hardware dinámicamente reconfigurable –disponible a través de dispositivos lógicos programables SRAM FPGA/SoC– que contribuyan a la mejora de la calidad de vida de la sociedad. Se investiga la arquitectura del sistema y del motor de reconfiguración que proporcione a la FPGA la capacidad de reconfiguración dinámica parcial de sus recursos programables, con objeto de sintetizar, mediante codiseño hardware/software, una determinada aplicación particionada en tareas multiplexadas en tiempo y en espacio, optimizando así su implementación física –área de silicio, tiempo de procesado, complejidad, flexibilidad, densidad funcional, coste y potencia disipada– comparada con otras alternativas basadas en hardware estático (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.).     An approach to open virtual commissioning for component-based automation

    Increasing market demands for highly customised products with shorter time-to-market and at lower prices are forcing manufacturing systems to be built and operated in a more efficient ways. In order to overcome some of the limitations in traditional methods of automation system engineering, this thesis focuses on the creation of a new approach to Virtual Commissioning (VC). In current VC approaches, virtual models are driven by pre-programmed PLC control software. These approaches are still time-consuming and heavily control expertise-reliant as the required programming and debugging activities are mainly performed by control engineers. Another current limitation is that virtual models validated during VC are difficult to reuse due to a lack of tool-independent data models. Therefore, in order to maximise the potential of VC, there is a need for new VC approaches and tools to address these limitations. The main contributions of this research are: (1) to develop a new approach and the related engineering tool functionality for directly deploying PLC control software based on component-based VC models and reusable components; and (2) to build tool-independent common data models for describing component-based virtual automation systems in order to enable data reusability.     Lifted structural invariant analysis of Petri net product lines

    Petri nets are commonly used to represent concurrent systems. However, they lack support for modelling and analysing system families, like variants of controllers, different variations of a process model, or the possible configurations of a flexible assembly line. To facilitate modelling potentially large collections of similar systems, in this paper, we enrich Petri nets with variability mechanisms based on product line engineering. Moreover, we present methods for the efficient analysis of the place and transition invariants in all defined versions of a Petri net. Efficiency is achieved by analysing the system family as a whole, instead of analysing each possible net variant separately. For this purpose, we lift the notion of incidence matrix to the product line level, and rely on constraint solving techniques. We present tool support and evaluate the benefits of our techniques on synthetic and realistic examples, achieving in some cases speed-ups of two orders of magnitude with respect to analysing each net variant separatelyThis work has been funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science (PID2021-122270OB-I00) and the R&D programme of Madrid (P2018/TCS-4314
