New method to design multiplier-less pulse shaping filters with minimal number of operations

    Get PDF
Software-Defined Radio (SDR) technology is evolving rapidly, offering higher flexibility for wireless communication networks. For the sake of performance, and power consumption, filtering is commonly implemented in hardware using FPGAs. Pulse shaping in the transmitter and the corresponding matched filtering in the receiver, which together satisfy the Nyquist inter symbol interference (ISI) criterion, are no exception to this. To decrease the FPGA resources used by filters, to increase speed and to decrease power consumption the filter coefficients can be optimized by expressing them in canonical signed digit (CSD) form, using as few arithmetic operations per filter as possible, while maintaining acceptable filter characteristics. In this paper a new method to decrease the number of nonzero signed digits is presented. With this method a reduction of up to 65% of the nonzero signed digits per filter is realized, while decreasing the ISI ratio too

Firefly algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm that can be used to solve complex multi-parameter problems in less time. The algorithm was applied to design digital filters of different orders as well as to determine the parameters of complex neural network designs. Digital filters have several applications in the fields of control systems, aerospace, telecommunication, medical equipment and applications, digital appliances, audio recognition processes etc. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is an information processing paradigm that is inspired by the way biological nervous systems, such as the brain, processes information and can be simulated using a computer to perform certain specific tasks like clustering, classification, and pattern recognition etc. The results of the designs using Firefly algorithm was compared to the state of the art algorithms and found that the digital filter designs produce results close to the Parks McClellan method which shows the algorithm’s capability of handling complex problems. Also, for the neural network designs, Firefly algorithm was able to efficiently optimize a number of parameter values. The performance of the algorithm was tested by introducing various input noise levels to the training inputs of the neural network designs and it produced the desired output with negligible error in a time-efficient manner. Overall, Firefly algorithm was found to be competitive in solving the complex design optimization problems like other popular optimization algorithms such as Differential Evolution, Particle Swarm Optimization and Genetic Algorithm. It provides a number of adjustable parameters which can be tuned according to the specified problem so that it can be applied to a number of optimization problems and is capable of producing quality results in a reasonable amount of time

NATURAL ALGORITHMS IN DIGITAL FILTER DESIGN

Digital filters are an important part of Digital Signal Processing (DSP), which plays vital roles within the modern world, but their design is a complex task requiring a great deal of specialised knowledge. An analysis of this design process is presented, which identifies opportunities for the application of optimisation. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Simulated Annealing are problem-independent and increasingly popular optimisation techniques. They do not require detailed prior knowledge of the nature of a problem, and are unaffected by a discontinuous search space, unlike traditional methods such as calculus and hill-climbing. Potential applications of these techniques to the filter design process are discussed, and presented with practical results. Investigations into the design of Frequency Sampling (FS) Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters using a hybrid GA/hill-climber proved especially successful, improving on published results. An analysis of the search space for FS filters provided useful information on the performance of the optimisation technique. The ability of the GA to trade off a filter's performance with respect to several design criteria simultaneously, without intervention by the designer, is also investigated. Methods of simplifying the design process by using this technique are presented, together with an analysis of the difficulty of the non-linear FIR filter design problem from a GA perspective. This gave an insight into the fundamental nature of the optimisation problem, and also suggested future improvements. The results gained from these investigations allowed the framework for a potential 'intelligent' filter design system to be proposed, in which embedded expert knowledge, Artificial Intelligence techniques and traditional design methods work together. This could deliver a single tool capable of designing a wide range of filters with minimal human intervention, and of proposing solutions to incomplete problems. It could also provide the basis for the development of tools for other areas of DSP system design

Harmony Search (HS) is an emerging metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the improvisation process of jazz musicians. In the HS algorithm, each musician (= decision variable) plays (= generates) a note (= a value) for finding the best harmony (= global optimum) all together. This algorithm has been employed to cope with numerous tasks in the past decade. In this thesis, HS algorithm has been applied to design digital filters of orders 24 and 48 as well as the parameters of neural network problems. Both multiobjective and single objective optimization techniques were applied to design FIR digital filters. 2-dimensional digital filters can be used for image processing and neural networks can be used for medical image diagnosis. Digital filter design using Harmony Search Algorithm can achieve results close to Parks McClellan Algorithm which shows that the algorithm is capable of solving complex engineering problems. Harmony Search is able to optimize the parameter values of feedforward network problems and fuzzy inference neural networks. The performance of a designed neural network was tested by introducing various noise levels at the testing inputs and the output of the neural networks with noise was compared to that without noise. It was observed that, even if noise is being introduced to the testing input there was not much difference in the output. Design results were obtained within a reasonable amount of time using Harmony Search Algorithm

Learning algorithms for adaptive digital filtering

In this thesis, we consider the problem of parameter optimisation in adaptive digital filtering. Adaptive digital filtering can be accomplished using both Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters and Infinite Impulse Response Filters (IIR) filters. Adaptive FIR filtering algorithms are well established. However, the potential computational advantages of IIR filters has led to an increase in research on adaptive IIR filtering algorithms. These algorithms are studied in detail in this thesis and the limitations of current adaptive IIR filtering algorithms are identified. New approaches to adaptive IIR filtering using intelligent learning algorithms are proposed. These include Stochastic Learning Automata, Evolutionary Algorithms and Annealing Algorithms. Each of these techniques are used for the filtering problem and simulation results are presented showing the performance of the algorithms for adaptive IIR filtering. The relative merits and demerits of the different schemes are discussed. Two practical applications of adaptive IIR filtering are simulated and results of using the new adaptive strategies are presented. Other than the new approaches used, two new hybrid schemes are proposed based on concepts from genetic algorithms and annealing. It is shown with the help of simulation studies, that these hybrid schemes provide a superior performance to the exclusive use of any one scheme
