    The process of handling solid waste becomes complex and tedious due to the urbanization and industrialization of the most developing and developed countries. These solid waste issues if it is not addressed properly it affects ecosystem and environment. There is a possibility of many health-oriented issues especially during the pandemic period covid-19. Most of the human beings are struggling with respiratory pulmonary diseases, asthma caused by these solid wastes. Most of the governments are also spending huge amount of money for labors, devices and some technologies to tackle these solid waste issues. There is also an opportunity for the government to generate revenue from these solid wastes by properly sorting these waste into recyclable, nonrecyclable and bio-degradable wastes. But when humans are involved in sorting these waste it will cause some diseases and hygienic problems. So,in order to address the above said issues in this work the role of modern technologies, algorithms and some Internet of things (IoT) methods are discussed. Implementing these technologies in the future will save huge amount of money spent by the government for the solid waste management activities

    Blockchain-based life cycle assessment: An implementation framework and system architecture

    Life cycle assessment (LCA) is widely used for assessing the environmental impacts of a product or service. Collecting reliable data is a major challenge in LCA due to the complexities involved in the tracking and quantifying inputs and outputs at multiple supply chain stages. Blockchain technology offers an ideal solution to overcome the challenge in sustainable supply chain management. Its use in combination with internet-of-things (IoT) and big data analytics and visualization can help organizations achieve operational excellence in conducting LCA for improving supply chain sustainability. This research develops a framework to guide the implementation of Blockchain-based LCA. It proposes a system architecture that integrates the use of Blockchain, IoT, and big data analytics and visualization. The proposed implementation framework and system architecture were validated by practitioners who were experienced with Blockchain applications. The research also analyzes system implementation costs and discusses potential issues and solutions, as well as managerial and policy implications

    Digital Technologies as Enablers of Component Reuse : Value Chain Perspectives in Construction & Manufacturing

    Our planet is experiencing climate emergency due to the overconsumption of natural resources and ever-increasing carbon footprint. The construction and manufacturing industries are by far the biggest contributors to this grim situation. Hence, it is of paramount importance that the current economic model in those industries shifts from conventional linear to circular. Among the different circular economy (CE) approaches, adopting the component reuse practices is more imperative; because, after reduce, reuse is considered to be the least resource and energy intensive CE principle. With regard to transformation of the construction and manufacturing industries towards component reuse, digitalization could play a major enabling role. However, how the digital technologies such as BIM, digital twin, IoT (sensors and RFIDs), and robots could facilitate the component reuse practices is still an underexplored field of study. Additionally, the studies thus far in this direction lack the integrative approach both from multi-technology and multi-stakeholder perspectives. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate the perspectives of value chain actors, in construction and manufacturing, on how the digital technologies can advance component reuse practices. To address the research objective, this study employs qualitative research methodology and therein, multiple case study method. For the selection of most relevant cases, purposive sampling strategy was used. As a result, ten cases were selected, out of which, six are from the construction industry and the remaining four belong to manufacturing industry. To garner the primary data from those cases, semi-structured elite interviews were carried out. Subsequently, the data analysis process proceeded from within-case analysis to cross-case analysis. Finally, the findings from construction industry were juxtaposed to the findings from manufacturing industry, in order to examine the similarities and differences in how the digital technologies can advance component reuse practices in each industry. The findings of this study suggest that both the construction and manufacturing industries are becoming more perceptive to the need circular economy transformation. They recognize that the digital technologies are de facto the cornerstones in their efforts to adopt component reuse practices. The results demonstrate that collectively the BIM and IoT in construction, similar to digital twin and IoT in manufacturing, enables several component reuse practices- namely, DfDR, predictive maintenance, logistics & inventory management, quality & lifecycle assessment, and component disassembly planning. In addition, a few digital technology-enabled reuse practices were identified, that are peculiar to each industry. Robots, for instance, were recognized for the potential to partially automate some repetitive processes in construction industry, but that was not the case in manufacturing. Nevertheless, this study indicate that, for the technologies to be optimal in their enabling role, their current technological capabilities need to be developed further in the future. This study enriches the literature stream in circular economy and digitalization both in terms research methodology and findings. By taking a broader and integrative stance and through comparative study of two industries, this study validates several previous findings and also pro-poses novel findings of its own. To the practitioners the findings will provide comprehensive in-sights that may be useful in their efforts to adopt or foster digitalization in component reuse context. Finally, this study identifies a few directions for future research that may result in promising outcomes

Comparativamente ao método atual, esta abordagem é mais ágil e diminui os recursos necessários para implementação. A abordagem aqui discutida é centrada no uso de redes neuronais convolucionais, especificamente a rede YOLO.     Comparative Study of Periodic Review Policy and IoT Enabled Policy for the Domestic Waste Management

    “Innovation is the difference between leaders and followers” said the famous Apple‟s CEO, Steve Jobs. The technological advancement was and will always be exploited into delivering a higher quality of life for communities. The Internet of Things (IoT) technology is not excluded from this fact. Nowadays, many countries are building smart cities that are equipped with smart traffic control, environmental monitoring and public safety. Smart waste management is an emerging initiative in this matter. This thesis addresses the application of the IoT in the waste collection systems. It assesses the Periodic Review Policy and the IoT Enabled Policy of waste collection systems. A model was developed for each system using Anylogic software. Each model performance was tested using six different waste generation scenarios and seven collection policies. The performance analysis of the models was based on the economic, environmental and citizen satisfaction measures. The results of this research showed that each collection model achieved good performance in a specific scenario. The three times per week periodic review policy performed the best for high waste generation scenarios whereas the 70% threshold IoT enabled policy was the best for low waste generation scenarios

    Traceability management as a multidisciplinary topic: Trends and gaps in recent scholarly research

    Traceability can be studied from different viewpoints. In this paper, we analyze it as a management tool whose implementation implies organizational changes for the firm, but via which improved competitiveness may be realized. More specifically, the aim of this paper is to analyze the evolution of traceability management topic over the past twenty years (1994-2014) through a literature review, to identify the related concepts and settings that have been considered, and further, to delineate possible research gaps in the literature. To achieve this objective we created a self-assembled database, which permitted us to carry out a descriptive analysis of papers and to derive relevant conclusions and different implications for the future. We found that the concept of traceability as a tool to improve organizational performance has gained legitimacy and consequently is now widespread. Hence, traceability is treated from different areas of the firm embracing implementation, control, information systems, consumers' opinion or supply chain. Additionally, we believe that traceability research has to progress furthermore so as to dismantle its sturdy focus on the food industry because traceability management can be meaningful for broad sectorial applications. This study contributes to the traceability body of literature as it permits defining the trends about this research field and it represents an orientated guide to enrich traceability studies in topics associated to business organizations
