Occupational therapists believe social engagement is vital to the health and well-being of the older adult. Social isolation has been linked to loss of physical, cognitive and emotional health. Elders at risk of social isolation are not specifically addressed by community health programs due to lack of knowledge and resources. Social isolation and loss of meaningful activity are significant precursors to rapid decline in the health and well-being of elderly people living in their communities. Literature indicates that use of personal learning style preferences to problem solve improves success in occupation. Older adults often lack awareness of their personal learning styles and how to use them as tools to experience success in new learning, relearning of old skills and adapting to changing contexts in community living. Failure to understand often leads to ineffective approaches to new occupations or avoidance of activities that led to frustration or perceived loss of ability in the past. This leads to loss of self-efficacy, isolation and apathy. The older adult population is in need of education in recognizing their individual learning styles and how to best use this information as a tool to optimize their function in meaningful community occupations. They will benefit from learning and practicing learning strategies specific to the needs of the older adult to improve effective community engagement. The population of interest for this scholarly project are elders who are living in community but are not actively engaged or rarely engaged in occupations outside their homes, from the very elderly (70+) to the oldest-old (80+) (Maderer & Skiba, 2006, p. 126) who are at increased risk of reduced health status and quality of life due to isolation and inactivity. These are elderly men and women who are regarded as most vulnerable to a future need for home health care or eventual institutionalization. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to gather information regarding social isolation and the benefits of participation in occupations that have meaning to the individual. The findings indicate that community health interventions frequently take place in group settings with a select population of elders dwelling in senior housing. Direct therapy services to provide individualized, occupation-based interventions can provide the impetus for future gro~p participation for this at risk population. A need exists for a manual to present the role of the occupational therapist in addressing the social participation needs of the elder hoping to remain in place. The goal of this project is to provide a manual designed to enhance the knowledge and confidence of occupational therapists working with this challenging population. It provides the practitioner with education in and application of adult learning styles and experiential learning theories and includes a quick reference pamphlet for learning style identification in the field. It contains learning strategies for older adults as important aspects of teaching the elderly an effective means of learning, reflecting and applying self-directed goals toward meaningful social occupations

A study of EU data protection regulation and appropriate security for digital services and platforms

A law often has more than one purpose, more than one intention, and more than one interpretation. A meticulously formulated and context agnostic law text will still, when faced with a field propelled by intense innovation, eventually become obsolete. The European Data Protection Directive is a good example of such legislation. It may be argued that the technological modifications brought on by the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) are nominal in comparison to the previous Directive, but from a business perspective the changes are significant and important. The Directive’s lack of direct economic incentive for companies to protect personal data has changed with the Regulation, as companies may now have to pay severe fines for violating the legislation. The objective of the thesis is to establish the notion of trust as a key design goal for information systems handling personal data. This includes interpreting the EU legislation on data protection and using the interpretation as a foundation for further investigation. This interpretation is connected to the areas of analytics, security, and privacy concerns for intelligent service development. Finally, the centralised platform business model and its challenges is examined, and three main resolution themes for regulating platform privacy are proposed. The aims of the proposed resolutions are to create a more trustful relationship between providers and data subjects, while also improving the conditions for competition and thus providing data subjects with service alternatives. The thesis contributes new insights into the evolving privacy practices in the digital society at an important time of transition from the service driven business models to the platform business models. Firstly, privacy-related regulation and state of the art analytics development are examined to understand their implications for intelligent services that are based on automated processing and profiling. The ability to choose between providers of intelligent services is identified as the core challenge. Secondly, the thesis examines what is meant by appropriate security for systems that handle personal data, something the GDPR requires that organisations use without however specifying what can be considered appropriate. We propose a method for active network security in web software that is developed through the use of analytics for detection and by inserting data generators into a software installation. The active network security method is proposed as a framework for achieving compliance with the GDPR requirements for services and platforms to use appropriate security. Thirdly, the platform business model is considered from the privacy point of view and the implication of “processing silos” for intelligent services. The centralised platform model is considered problematic from both the data subject and from the competition standpoint. A resolution is offered for enabling user-initiated open data flow to counter the centralised “processing silos”, and thereby to facilitate the introduction of decentralised platforms. The thesis provides an interdisciplinary analysis considering the legal study (lex lata) and additionally the resolution (lex ferenda) is defined through argumentativist legal dogmatics and (de lege ferenda) of how the legal framework ought to be adapted to fit the described environment. User-friendly Legal Science is applied as a theory framework to provide a holistic approach to answering the research questions. The User-friendly Legal Science theory has its roots in design science and offers a way towards achieving interdisciplinary research in the fields of information systems and legal science

Cloud Computing and Cloud Automata as A New Paradigm for Computation

Cloud computing addresses how to make right resources available to right computation to improve scaling, resiliency and efficiency of the computation. We argue that cloud computing indeed, is a new paradigm for computation with a higher order of artificial intelligence (AI), and put forward cloud automata as a new model for computation. A high-level AI requires infusing features that mimic human functioning into AI systems. One of the central features is that humans learn all the time and the learning is incremental. Consequently, for AI, we need to use computational models, which reflect incremental learning without stopping (sentience). These features are inherent in reflexive, inductive and limit Turing machines. To construct cloud automata, we use the mathematical theory of Oracles, which include Oracles of Turing machines as its special case. We develop a hierarchical approach based on Oracles with different ranks that includes Oracle AI as a special case. Discussing a named-set approach, we describe an implementation of a high-performance edge cloud using hierarchical name-oriented networking and Oracle AI-based orchestration. We demonstrate how cloud automata with a control overlay allows microservice network provisioning, monitoring and reconfiguration to address non-deterministic fluctuations affecting their behavior without interrupting the overall evolution of computation

The primacy of Knowing-how : cognition, know-how and an enactive action first epistemology

The Enactive Approach (EA) is a project of naturalization of the mind. EA should be able to offer a naturalization of knowledge, such underlying naturalization is what is found in this dissertation. The result is an epistemology where the most basal aspect of knowledge is not to accurately represent. For an enactive epistemology, the primary relation is how knowers relate, contact or engage with what is known. I argue in the final chapter that knowing is a perspectival, affectively entangled, historically situated relation between knower and known. Knower, known and knowing are characterized in broad naturalistic terms. EA is first presented in the context of a larger trend of studying cognition in an ecological way. The understanding of mind in the context of the living leads me to argue that living systems and precarious autonomous systems in general are intrinsically teleological systems whose defining activity consists in being responsive to the viability boundaries or conditions of their own existence. Cognitive systems skillfully change in adaptive manners to not disintegrate, even if their changes are not optimal. The account provides a relational account of adaptive behavior as the basis for an account of know-how. The more general notion of know-how can be articulated from the notion of perception as mastery of sensorimotor contingencies. Know how in general is understood as the organization and reorganization of bodily processes and structures that enables reliable successful action. Know-how as the bodily sensitivities and capabilities relative to the cognitive domain that reliably result in the success of action is a feature of all forms of cognitive engagement. The cognition or knowing-how of languaging consists in acquiring, producing, interpreting and modifying the know-how shared within linguistic communities. Crucially, the influence of the interactive context in a participant’s sense-making varies in a continuum of participation. In one end of the spectrum one finds sense-making that remains largely (but not absolutely) individual and in the other end where what characterizes the activity is a joint process of sense-making. Knowing-how to language is knowing-how to be in dialogue with plural and idiosyncratic identities while being both yourself. A shared community of practices emerges as the basis of objectivity; knowing-how is a communal affair. If cognition is the skillful and not necessarily optimal adaptation of a precarious systemic identity to an always changing environment, all cognition rests on know how. Cognition rests on know-how in the sense that all cognition is understood in terms of skillful transition between states of a system struggling with possible disintegration. Intelligent behavior is not based on symbolic structures and context-free knowledge, it is based on richly detailed, context-specific know-how. The knowledgeable interaction with the world is the responsiveness to the now that incorporates the history leading up to it.A Abordagem Enativa (AE) é um projeto de naturalização da mente.

A visual approach to measuring personality systems

    Get PDF
A visual approach to measuring implicit personality systems is explored in this article. Six scales, consisting of optical stimuli (icons), were developed by conducting factor analyses using data from 3 studies with more than 70.000 participants. Internal consistencies and testretest-correlations of the six scales were satisfactory. Incremental validity of the visual scales was examined in 3 studies (N = 232). Results from regression analyses showed that the visual scales are distinct from self-report scales and can explain additional variances in behaviorally anchored rating scales and supervisor ratings. The gain in explained variance beyond selfreport measures was on average 140% in the three studies. The authors conclude that measuring personality dimensions via a visual method can make a significant contribution in explaining implicit information processing and behavior and deserves consideration in applied settings. For example, using visuals that are consistent with implicit versus explicit personality systems of the key audience may deepen our understanding of advertising effectiveness, media use and consumer behavior. --implicit,personality systems interaction,PSI-theory,visual questionnaire (ViQ),Jungian typology
