    Real-time content-aware video retargeting on the Android platform for tunnel vision assistance

    As mobile devices continue to rise in popularity, advances in overall mobile device processing power lead to further expansion of their capabilities. This, coupled with the fact that many people suffer from low vision, leaves substantial room for advancing mobile development for low vision assistance. Computer vision is capable of assisting and accommodating individuals with blind spots or tunnel vision by extracting the necessary information and presenting it to the user in a manner they are able to visualize. Such a system would enable individuals with low vision to function with greater ease. Additionally, offering assistance on a mobile platform allows greater access. The objective of this thesis is to develop a computer vision application for low vision assistance on the Android mobile device platform. Specifically, the goal of the application is to reduce the effects tunnel vision inflicts on individuals. This is accomplished by providing an in-depth real-time video retargeting model that builds upon previous works and applications. Seam carving is a content-aware retargeting operator which defines 8-connected paths, or seams, of pixels. The optimality of these seams is based on a specific energy function. Discrete removal of these seams permits changes in the aspect ratio while simultaneously preserving important regions. The video retargeting model incorporates spatial and temporal considerations to provide effective image and video retargeting. Data reduction techniques are utilized in order to generate an efficient model. Additionally, a minimalistic multi-operator approach is constructed to diminish the disadvantages experienced by individual operators. In the event automated techniques fail, interactive options are provided that allow for user intervention. Evaluation of the application and its video retargeting model is based on its comparison to existing standard algorithms and its ability to extend itself to real-time. Performance metrics are obtained for both PC environments and mobile device platforms for comparison

    Methodology and Algorithms for Pedestrian Network Construction

    With the advanced capabilities of mobile devices and the success of car navigation systems, interest in pedestrian navigation systems is on the rise. A critical component of any navigation system is a map database which represents a network (e.g., road networks in car navigation systems) and supports key functionality such as map display, geocoding, and routing. Road networks, mainly due to the popularity of car navigation systems, are well defined and publicly available. However, in pedestrian navigation systems, as well as other applications including urban planning and physical activities studies, road networks do not adequately represent the paths that pedestrians usually travel. Currently, there are no techniques to automatically construct pedestrian networks, impeding research and development of applications requiring pedestrian data. This coupled with the increased demand for pedestrian networks is the prime motivation for this dissertation which is focused on development of a methodology and algorithms that can construct pedestrian networks automatically. A methodology, which involves three independent approaches, network buffering (using existing road networks), collaborative mapping (using GPS traces collected by volunteers), and image processing (using high-resolution satellite and laser imageries) was developed. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the pedestrian networks constructed by these approaches with a pedestrian network baseline as a ground truth. The results of the experiments indicate that these three approaches, while differing in complexity and outcome, are viable for automatically constructing pedestrian networks

    Using wireless sensors and networks program for chemical particle propagation mapping and chemical source localization

    Chemical source localization is a challenge for most of researchers. It has extensive applications, such as anti-terrorist military, Gas and oil industry, and environment engineering. This dissertation used wireless sensor and sensor networks to get chemical particle propagation mapping and chemical source localization. First, the chemical particle propagation mapping is built using interpolation and extrapolation methods. The interpolation method get the chemical particle path through the sensors, and the extrapolation method get the chemical particle beyond the sensors. Both of them compose of the mapping in the whole considered area. Second, the algorithm of sensor fusion is proposed. It smooths the chemical particle paths through integration of more sensors\u27 value and updating the parameters. The updated parameters are associated with including sensor fusion among chemical sensors and wind sensors at same positions and sensor fusion among sensors at different positions. This algorithm improves the accuracy and efficiency of chemical particle mapping. Last, the reasoning system is implemented aiming to detect the chemical source in the considered region where the chemical particle propagation mapping has been finished. This control scheme dynamically analyzes the data from the sensors and guide us to find the goal. In this dissertation, the novel algorithm of modelling chemical propagation is programmed using Matlab. Comparing the results from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software COMSOL, this algorithm have the same level of accuracy. However, it saves more computational times and memories.     Visual Attention in Dynamic Environments and its Application to Playing Online Games

    Abstract In this thesis we present a prototype of Cognitive Programs (CPs) - an executive controller built on top of Selective Tuning (ST) model of attention. CPs enable top-down control of visual system and interaction between the low-level vision and higher-level task demands. Abstract We implement a subset of CPs for playing online video games in real time using only visual input. Two commercial closed-source games - Canabalt and Robot Unicorn Attack - are used for evaluation. Their simple gameplay and minimal controls put the emphasis on reaction speed and attention over planning. Abstract Our implementation of Cognitive Programs plays both games at human expert level, which experimentally proves the validity of the concept. Additionally we resolved multiple theoretical and engineering issues, e.g. extending the CPs to dynamic environments, finding suitable data structures for describing the task and information flow within the network and determining the correct timing for each process

    Syntactic and Semantic Interoperability Among Hydrologic Models

    Development of integrated hydrologic models requires coupling of multidisciplinary, independent models and collaboration between different scientific communities. Component-based modeling provides an approach for the integration of models from different disciplines. A key advantage of component-based modeling is that it allows components to be created, tested, reused, extended, and maintained by a large group of model developers and end users. One significant challenge that must be addressed in creating an integrated hydrologic model using a component-based approach is enhancing the interoperability of components between different modeling communities and frameworks. The major goal of this work is to advance the integration of water related model components coming from different disciplines using the information underlying these models. This is achieved through addressing three specific research objectives. The first objective is to investigate the ability of component-based architecture to simulate feedback loops between hydrologic model components that share a boundary condition, and how data is transfered between temporally misaligned model components. The second objective is to promote the interoperability of components across water-related disciplinary boundaries and modeling frameworks by establishing an ontology for components\u27 metadata. The third study objective is to develop a domain-level ontology for defining hydrologic processes

    Intelligent Techniques to Accelerate Everyday Text Communication

    People with some form of speech- or motor-impairments usually use a high-tech augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device to communicate with other people in writing or in face-to-face conversations. Their text entry rate on these devices is slow due to their motor abilities. Making good letter or word predictions can help accelerate the communication of such users. In this dissertation, we investigated several approaches to accelerate input for AAC users. First, considering that an AAC user is participating in a face-to-face conversation, we investigated whether performing speech recognition on the speaking-side can improve next word predictions. We compared the accuracy of three plausible microphone deployment options and the accuracy of two commercial speech recognition engines. We found that despite recognition word error rates of 7-16%, our ensemble of n-gram and recurrent neural network language models made predictions nearly as good as when they used the reference transcripts. In a user study with 160 participants, we also found that increasing number of prediction slots in a keyboard interface does not necessarily correlate to improved performance. Second, typing every character in a text message may require an AAC user more time or effort than strictly necessary. Skipping spaces or other characters may be able to speed input and reduce an AAC user\u27s physical input effort. We designed a recognizer optimized for expanding noisy abbreviated input where users often omitted spaces and mid-word vowels. We showed using neural language models for selecting conversational-style training text and for rescoring the recognizer\u27s n-best sentences improved accuracy. We found accurate abbreviated input was possible even if a third of characters was omitted. In a study where users had to dwell for a second on each key, we found sentence abbreviated input was competitive with a conventional keyboard with word predictions. Finally, AAC keyboards rely on language modeling to auto-correct noisy typing and to offer word predictions. While today language models can be trained on huge amounts of text, pre-trained models may fail to capture the unique writing style and vocabulary of individual users. We demonstrated improved performance compared to a unigram cache by adapting to a user\u27s text via language models based on prediction by partial match (PPM) and recurrent neural networks. Our best model ensemble increased keystroke savings by 9.6%
