A PDTB-Styled End-to-End Discourse Parser
We have developed a full discourse parser in the Penn Discourse Treebank
(PDTB) style. Our trained parser first identifies all discourse and
non-discourse relations, locates and labels their arguments, and then
classifies their relation types. When appropriate, the attribution spans to
these relations are also determined. We present a comprehensive evaluation from
both component-wise and error-cascading perspectives.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 7 table
GEMINI: A Natural Language System for Spoken-Language Understanding
Gemini is a natural language understanding system developed for spoken
language applications. The paper describes the architecture of Gemini, paying
particular attention to resolving the tension between robustness and
overgeneration. Gemini features a broad-coverage unification-based grammar of
English, fully interleaved syntactic and semantic processing in an all-paths,
bottom-up parser, and an utterance-level parser to find interpretations of
sentences that might not be analyzable as complete sentences. Gemini also
includes novel components for recognizing and correcting grammatical
disfluencies, and for doing parse preferences. This paper presents a
component-by-component view of Gemini, providing detailed relevant measurements
of size, efficiency, and performance.Comment: 8 pages, postscrip
Connectionist natural language parsing
The key developments of two decades of connectionist parsing are reviewed. Connectionist parsers are assessed according to their ability to learn to represent syntactic structures from examples automatically, without being presented with symbolic grammar rules. This review also considers the extent to which connectionist parsers offer computational models of human sentence processing and provide plausible accounts of psycholinguistic data. In considering these issues, special attention is paid to the level of realism, the nature of the modularity, and the type of processing that is to be found in a wide range of parsers
