Using Technology to Develop Ethical Choice in Engineering Students
This paper describes the interactive technology that we have added to an undergraduate course titled “Engineering Ethics and Impact on Society.” The purpose of this technology is to develop students’ awareness of cultural differences in engineers’ approaches to ethical practice, and to develop students’ abilities to communicate in a global workplace. These goals are being pursued through a website that is publicly available, titled Reflective Choices http://ReflectiveChoices.ttu.edu. We describe the development of the website and results from the first several months of implementation. A major purpose of this paper is to make our colleagues aware of this website and to encourage them to contribute featured articles related to engineering ethics and professional practice.Cockrell School of Engineerin
Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC).
Machine methods for automatically analyzing text have been investigated for
decades. Yet the availability and usability of these methods for classifying and scoring specialized
essays in small samples–as is typical for ordinary coursework–remains unclear. In this paper we
analyzed 156 essays submitted by students in a first-year college rhetoric course. Using cognitive
and affective measures within Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC), we tested whether
machine analyses could i) distinguish among essay topics, ii) distinguish between high and low
writing quality, and iii) identify differences due to changes in rhetorical context across writing
assignments. The results showed positive results for all three tests. We consider ways that LIWC
may benefit college instructors in assessing student compositions and in monitoring the
effectiveness of the course curriculum. We also consider extensions of machine assessments for
instructional applications.
Linguistic Inquiry and
Word Count (LIWC)

Do Engineering Students Learn Ethics From an Ethics Course?
The goal of the present research is to develop machine-assisted methods that can assist in the analysis of students’ written compositions in ethics courses. As part of this research, we analyzed Social Impact Assessment (SIA) papers submitted by engineering undergraduates in a course on engineering ethics. The SIA papers required students to identify and discuss a contemporary engineering technology (e.g., autonomous tractor trailers) and to explicitly discuss the ethical issues involved in that technology. Here we describe the ability of three machine tools to discriminate differences in the technical compared to ethical portions of the SIA papers. First, using LIWC (Language Inquiry and Word Count) we quantified differences in analytical thinking, expertise and self-confidence, disclosure, and affect, in the technical and ethical portions of the papers. Next, we applied MEH (Meaning Extraction Helper) to examine differences in critical concepts in the technical and ethical portions of the papers. Finally, we used LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) to examine differences in the topics in the technical and ethical portions of the papers. The results of these three tests demonstrate the ability of machine-based tools to discriminate conceptual, affective, and motivational differences in the texts that students compose that relate to engineering technology and to engineering ethics. We discuss the utility and future directions for this research.Cockrell School of Engineerin
In 2002, Hauser, Chomsky, and Fitch published an article in which they introduced a distinction between properties of language that are exclusively part of human communication (i.e., the FLN) and those properties that might be shared with other species (i.e., the FLB). The sole property proposed for the FLN was recursion. Hauser et al. provided evidence for their position based on issues of evolution. The question of the required properties of human language is central to developing theories of language processing and acquisition. In the present critique of Hauser et al. we consider two examples from non-English languages that argue against the suggestion that recursion is the sole property within the human language faculty. These are i) agreement of inflectional morphemes across sentence constructions, and ii) synthetic one-word constructions.
Maternal Depressive Symptoms and Parenting in Early Childhood: Moderation by Marital Quality and Child Negative Emotionality
A significant body of research has established an association between maternal depressive symptoms and parenting. The current study tested the possible moderating role of marital quality and child negative emotionality (NE) from 9 to 27 months among a sample (n = 561) of adopted children and their mothers. Although the data revealed direct associations between depressive symptoms, marital quality, child NE, and parenting behavior, moderation was not evident with the exception of two marginal trends. We found no evidence that marital quality moderated the association between maternal depressive symptoms and warm parenting and only weak evidence that marital quality moderated the association between depressive symptoms and harsh parenting. Similarly, we found no evidence that child NE moderated the association between maternal depressive symptoms and warm parenting and only weak evidence that child NE moderated the association between depressive symptoms and harsh parenting. The direction of effects for marginal moderated trends was unexpected and counter to our hypotheses. Theoretical relevance and implications for clinical practice are discussed
MacWhinney, Bates, and colleagues developed the Competition Model in the 1980s as an alternate to Chomskyan models that encapsulate syntax as a special-purpose module. The Competition Model adopted the functional perspective that language serves communicative goals and functions. In contrast to the premise that knowledge of language is innate, the Competition model asserts that language is learned and processed through general cognitive mechanisms that identify and weight phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic cues in the language experiences of the learner. These weighted cues guide the language user in the comprehension and production of language forms. The present article provides background on the Competition Model, describes machine simulations of linguistic competition, and extends the principles of the Competition Model to new machine models and applications through deep learning networks.Б.
Practitioners in many domains–e.g., clinical psychologists, college instructors,
researchers–collect written responses from clients. A well-developed method that has been applied
to texts from sources like these is the computer application Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count
(LIWC). LIWC uses the words in texts as cues to a person’s thought processes, emotional states,
intentions, and motivations. In the present study, we adopt analytic principles from LIWC and
develop and test an alternative method of text analysis using naïve Bayes methods. We further
show how output from the naïve Bayes analysis can be used for mark up of student work in order
to provide immediate, constructive feedback to students and instructors.

Language makes human communication possible. Apart from everyday applications, language can provide insights into individuals’ thinking and reasoning. Machine-based analyses of text are becoming widespread in business applications, but their utility in learning contexts are a neglected area of research. Therefore, the goal of the present work is to explore machine-assisted approaches to aid in the analysis of students’ written compositions. A method for extracting common topics from written text is applied to 78 student papers on technology and ethics. The primary tool for analysis is the Latent Dirichlet Allocation algorithm. The results suggest that this machine-based topic extraction method is effective and supports a promising prospect for enhancing classroom learning and instruction. The method may also prove beneficial in other applied applications, like those in clinical and counseling practice.
The “Avos” phenomenon: a non-censured theatre in the Novosibirsk University, 1975-1976). In: Mosty (The Bridges), Frankfurt, Germany, 2012, 35: 269–301.] [Part 3]
ABSTRACT
In 1975-1976, a group of science students of the Novosibirsk University (Russia, Siberia) created a small theatre that managed to avoid the official censorship for the entire season. In this memoir, several former actors, now scattered across the world, reconstruct the detailed history of their “Phenomenon” theatre 35 years later. The central event was the (first) staging (December 1975) of Andrey Voznesensky’s long poem “Avos\u27!”, long before the famous rock opera appeared
