Efficient Fast-Convolution-Based Waveform Processing for 5G Physical Layer
This paper investigates the application of fast-convolution (FC) filtering
schemes for flexible and effective waveform generation and processing in the
fifth generation (5G) systems. FC-based filtering is presented as a generic
multimode waveform processing engine while, following the progress of 5G new
radio standardization in the Third-Generation Partnership Project, the main
focus is on efficient generation and processing of subband-filtered cyclic
prefix orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) signals. First, a
matrix model for analyzing FC filter processing responses is presented and used
for designing optimized multiplexing of filtered groups of CP-OFDM physical
resource blocks (PRBs) in a spectrally well-localized manner, i.e., with narrow
guardbands. Subband filtering is able to suppress interference leakage between
adjacent subbands, thus supporting independent waveform parametrization and
different numerologies for different groups of PRBs, as well as asynchronous
multiuser operation in uplink. These are central ingredients in the 5G waveform
developments, particularly at sub-6-GHz bands. The FC filter optimization
criterion is passband error vector magnitude minimization subject to a given
subband band-limitation constraint. Optimized designs with different guardband
widths, PRB group sizes, and essential design parameters are compared in terms
of interference levels and implementation complexity. Finally, extensive coded
5G radio link simulation results are presented to compare the proposed approach
with other subband-filtered CP-OFDM schemes and time-domain windowing methods,
considering cases with different numerologies or asynchronous transmissions in
adjacent subbands. Also the feasibility of using independent transmitter and
receiver processing for CP-OFDM spectrum control is demonstrated
Theoretical Analysis and Performance Comparison of multi-carrier Waveforms for 5G Wireless Applications
5G wireless technology is a new wireless communication system that must meet different complementary needs: high data rate for mobile services, low energy consumption and long-range for connected objects, low latency to ensure real-time communication for critical applications and high spectral efficiency to improve the overall system capacity. The waveforms and associated signals processing, present a real challenge in the implementation for each generation of wireless communication networks. This paper presents the diverse waveforms candidate for 5G systems, including: CE-OFDM (Constant Envelope OFDM), Filter-Bank Multi Carrier (FBMC), Universal Filtered Multi-Carrier (UFMC) and Filtered OFDM (F-OFDM). In this work, simulations are carried out in order to compare the performance of the OFDM, CE-OFDM, F-OFDM, UFMC and FBMC in terms of Power spectral density (PSD) and of Bit Error Rate (BER). It has been demonstrated that (CE-OFDM), constitutes a more efficient solution in terms of energy consumption than OFDM signal. Moreover, the (F-OFDM), (UFMC) and (FBMC) could constitute a more efficient solution in terms of power spectral density, spectral efficiency and bit error rates. In fact, CE-OFDM reduces the Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) associated with OFDM system, FBMC is a method of improving out-of-band (OOB) characteristic by filtering each subcarrier and resisting the inter-carrier interference (ICI). While, UFMC offers a high spectral efficiency compared to OFDM
Low-Complexity Sub-band Digital Predistortion for Spurious Emission Suppression in Noncontiguous Spectrum Access
Noncontiguous transmission schemes combined with high power-efficiency
requirements pose big challenges for radio transmitter and power amplifier (PA)
design and implementation. Due to the nonlinear nature of the PA, severe
unwanted emissions can occur, which can potentially interfere with neighboring
channel signals or even desensitize the own receiver in frequency division
duplexing (FDD) transceivers. In this article, to suppress such unwanted
emissions, a low-complexity sub-band DPD solution, specifically tailored for
spectrally noncontiguous transmission schemes in low-cost devices, is proposed.
The proposed technique aims at mitigating only the selected spurious
intermodulation distortion components at the PA output, hence allowing for
substantially reduced processing complexity compared to classical linearization
solutions. Furthermore, novel decorrelation based parameter learning solutions
are also proposed and formulated, which offer reduced computing complexity in
parameter estimation as well as the ability to track time-varying features
adaptively. Comprehensive simulation and RF measurement results are provided,
using a commercial LTE-Advanced mobile PA, to evaluate and validate the
effectiveness of the proposed solution in real world scenarios. The obtained
results demonstrate that highly efficient spurious component suppression can be
obtained using the proposed solutions
Joint distribution of polarization-multiplexed UWB and WiMAX radio in PON
In this paper, the feasibility of the joint distribution of ultra-wideband (UWB) and WIMAX wireless using polarization multiplexing as a coexistence technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated within the framework of passive optical networks (PON). Four single- and orthogonal-polarization multiplexing schemes are studied targeting to reduce the mutual interference when UWB and WiMAX are distributed jointly through standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without transmission impairments compensation techniques and amplification. Experimental results indicate successful transmission up to 25 km, in SSMF exceeding the range in typical PON deployments. The radio link penalty introduced by optical transmission is also investigated in this paper
MIMO signal processing in offset-QAM based filter bank multicarrier systems
Next-generation communication systems have to comply with very strict requirements for increased flexibility in heterogeneous environments, high spectral efficiency, and agility of carrier aggregation. This fact motivates research in advanced multicarrier modulation (MCM) schemes, such as filter bank-based multicarrier (FBMC) modulation. This paper focuses on the offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM)-based FBMC variant, known as FBMC/OQAM, which presents outstanding spectral efficiency and confinement in a number of channels and applications. Its special nature, however, generates a number of new signal processing challenges that are not present in other MCM schemes, notably, in orthogonal-frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architectures, which are expected to play a primary role in future communication systems, these challenges are intensified, creating new interesting research problems and calling for new ideas and methods that are adapted to the particularities of the MIMO-FBMC/OQAM system. The goal of this paper is to focus on these signal processing problems and provide a concise yet comprehensive overview of the recent advances in this area. Open problems and associated directions for future research are also discussed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Secured Audio Signal Transmission in 5G Compatible mmWave Massive MIMO FBMC System with Implementation of Audio-to-image Transformation Aided Encryption Scheme
In this paper, we have made comprehensive study for the performance evaluation of mmWave massive MIMO FBMC wireless communication system. The 165F2;56 large MIMO antenna configured simulated system under investigation incorporates three modern channel coding (Turbo, LDPC and (3, 2) SPC, higher order digital modulation (256-QAM)) and various signal detection (Q-Less QR, Lattice Reduction(LR) based Zero-forcing(ZF), Lattice Reduction (LR) based ZF-SIC and Complex-valued LLL(CLLL) algorithm implemented ZF-SIC) schemes. An audio to image conversion aided chaos-based physical layer security scheme has also been implemented in such study. On considering transmission of encrypted audio signal in a hostile fading channel, it is noticeable from MATLAB based simulation study that the LDPC Channel encoded system is very much robust and effective in retrieving color image under utilization of Lattice Reduction(LR) based ZF-SIC signal detection and 16- QAM digital modulation techniques
Sub-Nyquist Sampling: Bridging Theory and Practice
Sampling theory encompasses all aspects related to the conversion of
continuous-time signals to discrete streams of numbers. The famous
Shannon-Nyquist theorem has become a landmark in the development of digital
signal processing. In modern applications, an increasingly number of functions
is being pushed forward to sophisticated software algorithms, leaving only
those delicate finely-tuned tasks for the circuit level.
In this paper, we review sampling strategies which target reduction of the
ADC rate below Nyquist. Our survey covers classic works from the early 50's of
the previous century through recent publications from the past several years.
The prime focus is bridging theory and practice, that is to pinpoint the
potential of sub-Nyquist strategies to emerge from the math to the hardware. In
that spirit, we integrate contemporary theoretical viewpoints, which study
signal modeling in a union of subspaces, together with a taste of practical
aspects, namely how the avant-garde modalities boil down to concrete signal
processing systems. Our hope is that this presentation style will attract the
interest of both researchers and engineers in the hope of promoting the
sub-Nyquist premise into practical applications, and encouraging further
research into this exciting new frontier.Comment: 48 pages, 18 figures, to appear in IEEE Signal Processing Magazin
Waveform Design for 5G and beyond Systems
5G traffic has very diverse requirements with respect to data rate, delay, and reliability. The concept of using multiple OFDM numerologies adopted in the 5G NR standard will likely meet these multiple requirements to some extent. However, the traffic is radically accruing different characteristics and requirements when compared with the initial stage of 5G, which focused mainly on high-speed multimedia data applications. For instance, applications such as vehicular communications and robotics control require a highly reliable and ultra-low delay. In addition, various emerging M2M applications have sparse traffic with a small amount of data to be delivered. The state-of-the-art OFDM technique has some limitations when addressing the aforementioned requirements at the same time. Meanwhile, numerous waveform alternatives, such as FBMC, GFDM, and UFMC, have been explored. They also have their own pros and cons due to their intrinsic waveform properties. Hence, it is the opportune moment to come up with modification/variations/combinations to the aforementioned techniques or a new waveform design for 5G systems and beyond. The aim of this Special Issue is to provide the latest research and advances in the field of waveform design for 5G systems and beyond

Oba navržené scénáře rozmístění antén jsou v závěru ověřeny lokalizačním měřením v reálných podmínkách.The doctoral thesis is focused on methods and systems for ranging and localization of RFID tags operating in the UHF band. It begins with a description of the state of the art in the field of RFID positioning with short extension to the area of modeling and prototyping of such systems. After a brief specification of dissertation objectives, the thesis overviews the theory of degenerate channel modeling for RFID communication. Details are given about phase-based ranging and direction of arrival finding methods. Several antenna placement scenarios are proposed for localization purposes. The degenerate channel models are simulated in MATLAB. A significant part of the thesis is devoted to software defined radio (SDR) concept and its adaptation for UHF RFID operation, as it has its specialties which make the usage of standard SDR test equipment very disputable. Transmit carrier leakage into receiver path and requirements on local oscillator signals for mixing are discussed. The development of three experimental prototypes is also presented there: experimental interrogator EXIN-1, measurement system based on Ettus USRP platform, and antenna switching matrix for an emulation of SIMO system. The final part is focused on testing and evaluation of described positioning techniques based on complex backscatter channel transfer function measurement. Both narrowband/wideband ranging and direction of arrival methods are validated. Finally, both proposed antenna placement scenarios are evaluated with real-world measurements.
