    Overview of the antibacterial properties of essential oils and extracts of medicinal plants in Iran

    Background and aims: With increased resistance resulting from overusing of chemical-synthetic antibiotics, finding alternative medicines that have antibacterial properties and they have the least side effects on human health appears to be necessary. Many studies have been taken into consideration medicinal plants with antimicrobial properties. The aim of this study was to have an overview of the antibacterial properties of medicinal plants. Methods: In this study, by searching key words as: herbs (Medicinal Plants), anti-bacterial properties of medicinal plants in Iran , antimicrobial properties of medicinal plants in Iran, in scientific articles published in databases as: Iranmedx, Magiran, Google scholar, Ebsco, Pubmed, Science direct, and SID, the required data were obtained. Results: Many herbs, including Zataria multifora, Urtica dioical, Crocus sativus L., Artemisia Absinthium, Menta piperita, Eucalyptus globules L., Borago officinalis L., Scrophularia desrti, Cuminum cyminum L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Allium hirtifolium, Castaneifolia- sativa, Allium sativum, Pycnocycla spinose, Juglans Regia, Salvia officinalis L. have strong antibacterial properties against a variety of pathogenic bacteria. Conclusion: In addition to the various medicinal plants with antimicrobial susceptibility and pathogenic bacteria resistance, antimicrobial properties of these studied medicinal plants could be used as a natural preservative in a variety of foods from these herbs. Thyme and garlic have antibacterial effects on an extensive range of positive and negative gram bacteria through them

    Euphorbia-derived natural products with potential for use in health maintenance

    Euphorbia genus (Euphorbiaceae family), which is the third largest genus of angiosperm plants comprising ca. 2000 recognized species, is used all over the world in traditional medicine, especially in the traditional Chinese medicine. Members of this taxa are promptly recognizable by their specialized inflorescences and latex. In this review, an overview of Euphorbia-derived natural products such as essential oils, extracts, and pure compounds, active in a broad range of biological activities, and with potential usages in health maintenance, is described. The chemical composition of essential oils from Euphorbia species revealed the presence of more than 80 phytochemicals, mainly oxygenated sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpenes hydrocarbons, while Euphorbia extracts contain secondary metabolites such as sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, sterols, flavonoids, and other polyphenols. The extracts and secondary metabolites from Euphorbia plants may act as active principles of medicines for the treatment of many human ailments, mainly inflammation, cancer, and microbial infections.     Mentha suaveolens Ehrh. (lamiaceae) essential oil and Its main constituent piperitenone oxide: biological activities and chemistry

    Since herbal medicines play an important role in the treatment of a wide range of diseases, there is a growing need for their quality control and standardization. Mentha suaveolens Ehrh. (MS) is an aromatic herb with fruit and a spearmint flavor, used in the Mediterranean areas as a traditional medicine. It has an extensive range of biological activities, including cytotoxic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypotensive and insecticidal properties, among others. This study aims to review the scientific findings and research reported to date on MS that prove many of the remarkable various biological actions, effects and some uses of this species as a source of bioactive natural compounds. On the other hand, piperitenone oxide (PO), the major chemical constituent of the carvone pathway MS essential oil, has been reported to exhibit numerous bioactivities in cells and animals. Thus, this integrated overview also surveys and interprets the present knowledge of chemistry and analysis of this oxygenated monoterpene, as well as its beneficial bioactivities.     Applications of Medicinal Herbs and Essential Oils in Food Safety

    In the last few years, more and more studies on the biological properties of essential oils (EOs) especially antimicrobial and antioxidant properties in vitro and food model have been published in all parts of the world. But so far no comprehensive reports of these studies have been reported in food model from Iran. The focus of this overview lies in the using of EOs from some indigenous medicinal plants of Iran (including Mentha longifolia, Cuminum cyminum, Teucrium polium, Pimpinella anisum and Allium ascalonicum) in probiotic dairy products (especially cheese, yoghurt and Aryan) in recent years. Recently, consumers have developed an ever-increasing interest in natural products as alternatives for artificial additives or pharmacologically relevant agents. Among them, EOs have gained great popularity in the food, cosmetic as well as pharmaceutical industries. Despite the reportedly strong antimicrobial activity of EOs against food-borne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms, their practical application as preservatives is currently limited owing to the undesirable flavour changes they cause in food products. Nonetheless, more studies are necessary to the applicability of various EOs on other food models in Iran and other countries

    A review of chemical components and pharmacological effects of Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff

    Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff. is a perennial aromatic herb, which grows up to 120 to 200 cm high. The flowers are 1 to 2 mm in diameter, all hermaphrodites and petals are yellow and produced in compound umbels. While this plant has lots of properties, the aim of this study is to overview its therapeutic, nutritive and industrial effects. This review article was carried out by searching studies in PubMed, Web of Science, and Iran Medex databases up to 2015. The search terms were "Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff.", "therapeutic", ''pharmacological", "keluss", "karafs e koohi", "wild celery" or their combinations. Totally, of 100 found articles, 47 articles (42 in vitro and 5 in vivo) were included. Various studies have shown that Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff. has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-fungi, larvicidal and insecticidal, anti-cancer, antimicrobial, sedative, anxiolytic, analgesic, anti-spasm, anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-hypercholesterolemic, antigenotoxic and fibrinolytic properties.Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff. is widely used for therapeutic and purposes that trigger its significant value. Various combinations and numerous medicinal properties of its extract, essential oils, its stems and leaves demand further and more scientific studies about the effective compounds this plant and their mechanism actions

    Herbal therapy for hemorrhoids: An Overview of Medicinal Plants Affecting Hemorrhoids

    Hemorrhoids are one of the most common rectal diseases that affect millions of people in the world and cause many medical and socio-economic problems. The resulting pain is very severe and incurs exorbitant costs for the patient and the government. This study aimed to review the medicinal plants that affect hemorrhoids. Complete databases searched for in those articles were Google Scholar, SID, Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct, and WOS search engines. The search was done for articles published that included the search term containing, medicinal plants and hemorrhoids in their title. This study focused on published articles and papers from 1991 to 2022.The results showed medicinal plants Aloe vera, Trigonella foenum-graecum L, Nigella sativa L, Curcuma longa L, Cocos nucifera L, Solanum nigrum L., Alhagi persarum Boiss & Buhse, Plantago lanceolata L, Achillea santolina, Malva neglecta Wallr,  Rubus fruticosus L  have effects like anti-bleeding, analgesic, anti-inflammatory,  and wound-healing, and with hemorrhoid-healing effect. Generally, the investigated traditional Iranian edible plants are rich in different types of chemical compounds and have special benefits in the prevention and treatment of diseases.Keywords: Medicinal plants; Hemorrhoids; Diseases; Remedy Drugs

    Since ancient times, plants have been used to preserve food, or for their health properties. Essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile compounds that are obtained from botanical material, specifically from aromatic plants. Lamiaceae is one of the most important families in the production of essential oils, as it has both antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The essential oils of Mentha (the Lamiaceae family) have been extensively studied for their biological actions. In this review, we report the antioxidant, antifungal, antibiofilm, and cytotoxic properties of Mentha spp. essential oils. The first objective is to provide comprehensive information about the use of essential oils in the treatment of fungal infections, or as antioxidants and integrative anticancer therapy. The second is to explore the evidence supporting its effectiveness in treating diseases without causing any serious adverse reactions

    Antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiviral properties of herbal materials

    Recently, increasing public concern about hygiene has been driving many studies to investigate antimicrobial and antiviral agents. However, the use of any antimicrobial agents must be limited due to their possible toxic or harmful effects. In recent years, due to previous antibiotics’ lesser side effects, the use of herbal materials instead of synthetic or chemical drugs is increasing. Herbal materials are found in medicines. Herbs can be used in the form of plant extracts or as their active components. Furthermore, most of the world’s populations used herbal materials due to their strong antimicrobial properties and primary healthcare benefits. For example, herbs are an excellent material to replace nanosilver as an antibiotic and antiviral agent. The use of nanosilver involves an ROS-mediated mechanism that might lead to oxidative stress-related cancer, cytotoxicity, and heart diseases. Oxidative stress further leads to increased ROS production and also delays the cellular processes involved in wound healing. Therefore, existing antibiotic drugs can be replaced with biomaterials such as herbal medicine with high antimicrobial, antiviral, and antioxidant activity. This review paper highlights the antibacterial, antiviral, and radical scavenger (antioxidant) properties of herbal materials. Antimicrobial activity, radical scavenger ability, the potential for antimicrobial, antiviral, and anticancer agents, and efficacy in eliminating bacteria and viruses and scavenging free radicals in herbal materials are discussed in this review. The presented herbal antimicrobial agents in this review include clove, portulaca, tribulus, eryngium, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, thyme, pennyroyal, mint, fennel, chamomile, burdock, eucalyptus, primrose, lemon balm, mallow, and garlic, which are all summarized. © 2020 by the authors.     Contamination with pests is the main problems of stored food products and can defects them from harvest time until storage. Pests have high proliferation rate, global distribution, and sometimes damage foods up to a hundred percent. Nowadays plant materials are used for pest control in warehouses. Volatile essential oils are important compounds to combat fungal pathogens, insects, herbivores and pests in stored food products. Herbs and botanicals have insecticide and insect repellent properties and are good alternative to chemical insecticides. This paper was aimed to have an overview on the most important native medicinal plants against flour beetle. All required information was obtained by searching key words such as flour beetle, medicinal plant extracts or essential oils and Iran of published articles in authentic scientific databases such as Sciencedirect, Blackwell Wiley, Springer, Scopus, Pubmed, Google scholar and Scientific information database (SID) and Magiran. Eucalyptus globulus, Perovskia atriplicifolia, Azadirachta indica Adr. Juss, Artemisia sieberi Besser, Carum copticum C. B. Clarke, Cuminum cyminum L, Bunium persicum Boiss, Elletaria cardamomum Maton, Nerium oleander L, Lavandula officinalis L, Ferula assafoetida L, Rosmarinus officinalis L. Artemisia dracunculus L, Foeniculum vulgare, Satureja hortensis L, Zygophyllum fabago L, Delphinium persicum, Calotropis procera (Ait.) R. Br are the main medicinal plants can affect on flour beetle. They have various compounds and based on the results of phytochemical studies each of active compounds of medicinal plants could have potential anti pest effects against flour beetle. Therefore, it is recommended that all active ingredients are investigated in experimental and pharmacological studies and in case of positive effects, they used for production of natural anti pest compounds against the flour beetle

    Review on the production of effective plant biopolymers in reducing microbial infections

      One of the most important problems from the past to the present is deadly opportunistic disease in developing countries, which leads to increase mortality in the world. Microbial pathogens such as fungi, bacteria, parasites, and viruses can cause these deadly opportunistic infections. Herbal medicines in the form of nanoparticles, nanocapsules, and biocompatible polymers, and liposomes can be effective in reducing mortality from these infections. Also due to the excessive use of antibiotics, microbial resistance is expanding day to day. On the other hand, indigenous, cheapness, availability, and rich source of effective herbal substances have made these compounds have many applications in biomedical fields. The aqueous extract, essential oil, and active ingredients of various parts of plants such as bark, stems, leaves, fruits, and seeds are used in the treatment of infectious diseases. This article provides information about medicinal plants that have antibacterial properties and are used to treat microbial infections. It is hoped that using this method can reduce and treat microbial infections to some extent
