The perception of the translated literary text depends to a large extent on the perception of his author's overall work in the country of the language into which it is translated. A certain "element of enigma" is found in the fame that the creation of the first Russian realist writer Nikólai Vasílievich Gógol (1809-1852) achieved outside his country, in foreign critics' opinion. They observe that he is possibly the most enigmatic and also the most modern writer of the Russian literature. When the history of the translations of his work into Spanish is analyzed, it can be noticed that since the beginning each new generation of translator and critics offered readers their own opinions and theories about Gógol's work. As a result, each theory, focusing on a single aspect of the writer's creation or personality, had a marked influence on his appraisal, determined the peculiarities of the perception of his works in each period by each new generation of readers, and these peculiarities were reflected in the translations of his works

Life, death, and something else ... religious struggle in the works of Nikolai Gogol

The article considers the religious nature of the creative life of Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) from a philosophical point of view. The writer’s creative life is understood as a struggle (bodily and spiritual) between God and the world, life and death. This struggle builds a kind of stage on which the writer's life unfolds. In addition, the article takes up the perception and understanding of reality as “banality” (pošlost’), the demonism and atheism that are connected with it, the religious function of art, and the ways of seeking salvation (at various levels of experience and under different guises: the salvation of the world, salvation outside world, and the salvation of oneself). Finally, the problem of religious alienation is considered, seen through the prism of the life and creative experience Gogol

Vladimir Nabokov's Pale Fire : a literary arabesque

    Get PDF
This thesis reads Vladimir Nabokov’s (1899-1977) postmodern novel Pale Fire (1962) as a literary arabesque. The arabesque is an Islamic art form which integrates different shapes and elements to produce a symmetrical ornament containing a single continuous line. The arabesque is also an artistic representation of foliage. During the 19th century, the literary arabesque was a style adopted by the Romantic writers Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), Friedrich Schlegel (1772-1829) and Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852). Influenced by Gogol, Nabokov adopted the writing style of the arabesque. Hence, this thesis compares Pale Fire to Gogol’s literary arabesque, Arabesques (1835). Just as writer’s rendered cubism, for example, in modernism, Nabokov incorporated the arabesque’s motifs in his postmodern novel. Furthermore, the presence of ‘patterns’ in Pale Fire have been identified by Nabokov’s readers. However, these patterns are very generalised. This thesis specifically identifies the pattern as an arabesque. I therefore define Nabokov’s literary arabesque as the figurative incorporation of the arabesque’s decorative motifs. These motifs include symmetry, reflection and infinite circulation. For example, “Pale Fire” is a symmetrically structured poem that repetitively circulates back to the beginning

“Readings†of N. V. Gogol`s Compassion by Turkish Novelist Alev Alatli

As a result of the evolutions one of the founding fathers of the 19th century Russian literature Nikolay Vasilyevich Gogol experienced in his thought, 'a few Gogol views' have been formed in the history of Russian literature according to both Western specialists and native Russian researchers. As Gogol is known more for his contribution to critical realism in Russian literature, the deep and vast allusions to layers of meaning in the plots of his works under the influence of despotism at that period make Gogol's works today much more valuable. N. V. Gogol's allusions of 'vastness and deepness' had quite different reflections on man's search for his interpretation and reading, and this difference has been keeping on widening his great diversity of understanding. Alev Alatlı shared the Gogol's readings with her readers in the novel Not Enlightenment, Compassion! / Aydınlanma DeÄŸil, Merhamet! with its unique plot and style, the first book of this series consisting of four volumes whose main title Following Gogol/Gogol'ün Ä°zinden' is given by her in the year 2003. In the novel the title 'Compassion' is preferred to 'Enlightenment', in pursuit of Gogol's readings after 151 years of his death by Alev Alatlı, a highly cultured intellectual; her perceptions of him and the actions triggered by this perceptions is the purpose of this presentation on the basis of the aforementioned work.Origins of Gogol’s compassion, its perception by Russian writers of that time, “Readings†of N. Clustering by compression

We present a new method for clustering based on compression. The method doesn't use subject-specific features or background knowledge, and works as follows: First, we determine a universal similarity distance, the normalized compression distance or NCD, computed from the lengths of compressed data files (singly and in pairwise concatenation). Second, we apply a hierarchical clustering method. The NCD is universal in that it is not restricted to a specific application area, and works across application area boundaries. A theoretical precursor, the normalized information distance, co-developed by one of the authors, is provably optimal but uses the non-computable notion of Kolmogorov complexity. We propose precise notions of similarity metric, normal compressor, and show that the NCD based on a normal compressor is a similarity metric that approximates universality. To extract a hierarchy of clusters from the distance matrix, we determine a dendrogram (binary tree) by a new quartet method and a fast heuristic to implement it. The method is implemented and available as public software, and is robust under choice of different compressors. To substantiate our claims of universality and robustness, we report evidence of successful application in areas as diverse as genomics, virology, languages, literature, music, handwritten digits, astronomy, and combinations of objects from completely different domains, using statistical, dictionary, and block sorting compressors. In genomics we presented new evidence for major questions in Mammalian evolution, based on whole-mitochondrial genomic analysis: the Eutherian orders and the Marsupionta hypothesis against the Theria hypothesis.Comment: LaTeX, 27 pages, 20 figure
