If we envisage the 19th century in France, from the Encyclopédie méthodique (1782-1832) by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke to the Grande Encyclopédie (1885-1902) by Marcelin Berthelot, as the century of dictionaries and encyclopaedias, then the 1830s constitute a crucial moment. The decisive technological and commercial innovations of the 1800-1830 period enabled the blossoming of the book and printing industry and the real birth of modern press

By the end of the 19th century the Thousand Days’ War took place, and this was an abrupt event of the confrontations between the Colombian political elites in a long cycle. Under the control of the “Regeneration” governments (1885-1902), nationalist conservatives commanded by Miguel Antonio Caroconfronted the radical liberals commanded by Rafael Uribe Uribe, and the liberals were circumstantially joined by historical conservatives led by Carlos Martínez Silva and Marceliano Vélez. The article explores the historical and politicalenvironment of the war and its consequences for the country are analyzed, as well as its consequences during the 20th century. From this war, some events such as the loss of Panama and the canal construction, Rafael Reyes’ dictatorship (commonly known as the “five-year period”), and the Republicanism project proposal conceived by Carlos E. Restrepo (1910-1914 President), who proposed a constitutional reform to include the basis of the Rights State in ColombiaA finales del siglo XIX, se produjo la Guerra de los Mil Días, acontecimiento abrupto de las confrontaciones acumuladas de las elites políticas colombianas en un largo ciclo. Katherine Anne Porter’s ”Old Mortality” is the story of Miranda’s growing up and flight from her family. It is divided into there approximately equal sections. In part I, dated 1885-1902. the readers are told of events in live of the elders, especially of the family legend about the “lovely” Aunt Amy. At the end of this period, Miranda, the priotagonist of the story, is eight years old and her sister, Maria, twelve. The second part of the story, set in 1904, after the death of the grand mother, contends with the first and negates it. The meeting with Uncle Gabriel bring home to the girls with shocking congency the falsity of the family myth and its moral destructiveness. At this period, Miranda, now ten years old, is already partially separated from the family, “immured” in the New Orleans convent school from whose dullness she will eventually escape into marriage. In the final part, dated 1992, Miranda is eighteen, on her way to attend Uncle Gabriel’s funeral. The readers learn that Miranda has run away from school and married. On the train, she meets Cousin Eva, the ugly duckling of her father’s generation and they fall into conversation. In the end, when they reach their destination and are met by Harry, Miranda’s father, Miranda feels once more cut off from her elders. It is clear that her father has not fully forgiven her for her elopement
