To fully understand music therapy in its contemporary form, it is crucial to reveal the rich heritage of music therapy in the course of history. This study analyzes Medicina Musica (1729) by Richard Browne. Browne was an apothecary who worked on music therapy, a subject historically taken up primarily by philosophers and clergymen. His contribution in Medicina Musica made him the first to offer insight into music therapy from a medical perspective. Browneâs description of the therapeutic effects of music is believed to be a pioneering work in the history of music therapy. In previous studies that treat this book, neither books nor scholarly articles focusing on Medicina Musica in its entirety have been found. This article investigates Browneâs music therapy by analyzing Medicina Musica itself. Making reference also to a work that Browne wrote anonymously two years before the publication of Medicina Musica called A Mechanical Essay on Singing, Musick and Dancing (1727), this article includes (1) a bibliographical review, (2) an account of Browneâs life and times, (3) a description of the content of Medicina Musica, (4) a description of the mechanistic view observed in Medicina Musica, and (5) a summary of the therapeutic principles found in Medicina Musica. Finally, I have tried to position Medicina Musica in the history of music therapy. Browneâs approach to music therapy was significantly influenced by Pitcairn and his students. Furthermore, Browne emphasized two concepts which constitute his therapeutic principles: âanimal spiritsâ and ânon-natural things.â Even though Medicina Musica is not a practical book but a theoretical one, like modern music therapy it highlights the theme that singing, music, and dancing can aid in the recovery of physical and mental health

CiNii, a web-based academic paper database, run by the National Institute of Informatics, retrieved approximately 110 articles published between 2009 and 2019,utilizing the search criteria âpiano instructionâ. The selected articles were categorized by two subjects, Research Methods and Contents of Research. It was found that Class Records, Experiments and Analysis were used as a Research Method in most research. It was also found that Learning Content, Improvement of Learning Content and Learning Effect were the most popular Research Content. The Research Content of the majority of the research was based on practical reports. Articles discussing the educational specialty of the piano instructor represented only 6% of the data. In this study, we discuss the significance of piano instruction in the nursery teacher training course, as supported by the latest research trends

In Japan, the purposes and contents of music education are ambiguous than in many developed countries such as England and Germany where GCSE and Abitur examinations are conducted respectively. In this article, we discussed on the academic ability of music education at elementary schools of Japan, especially from the viewpoint of understanding of the notes, the rests, and the musicsigns. 336 fresh students of 4 junior high schools were investigated, and the following results were obtained. 1. The correct answer rates of bar line, ending line, and tempo signature were very low. 2. The correct answer rates of notes, rests, and dynamics signature were relatively high. 3. The correct answer rates of students who had received only music education of elementary schools are lower than those of students who had experienced more than that. 4. Almost all elementary schools in Japan had not been instructed systematically on the notes, the rests, and the music-signs
