The position control of designed 3 PRR flexure based mechanism is examined in this paper. The aims of the work are to eliminate the parasitic motions of the stage, misalignments of the actuators, errors of manufacturing and hysteresis of the system by having a redundant mechanism with the implementation of a sliding mode control and a disturbance observe. x-y motion of the end-effector is measured by using a laser position sensor and the necessary references for the piezoelectric actuators are calculated using the pseudo inverse of the transformation matrix coming from the experimentally determined kinematics of the mechanism. The effect of the observer and closed loop control is presented by comparing the results with open loop control. The system is designed to be redundant to enhance the position control. In order to see the effects of the redundant system firstly the closed loop control for active 2 piezoelectric actuators experiments then for active 3 piezoelectric actuators experiments are presented. As a result, our redundant mechanism tracks the desired trajectory accurately and its workspace is bigger

Continuous time controller based on SMC and disturbance observer for piezoelectric actuators

Abstract – In this work, analog application for the Sliding Mode Control (SMC) to piezoelectric actuators (PEA) is presented. DSP application of the algorithm suffers from ADC and DAC conversions and mainly faces limitations in sampling time interval. Moreover piezoelectric actuators are known to have very large bandwidth close to the DSP operation frequency. Therefore, with the direct analog application, improvement of the performance and high frequency operation are expected. Design of an appropriate SMC together with a disturbance observer is suggested to have continuous control output and related experimental results for position tracking are presented with comparison of DSP and analog control application

Effect of bonding on the performance of a piezoactuator-based active control system

The utilization of piezoelectric actuators in controlling the structural vibrations of flexible beams is studied. A Modified Independent Modal Space Control (MIMSC) method is devised to select the optimal location, control gains and excitation voltage of the piezoelectric actuators in a way that would minimize the amplitudes of vibrations of beams to which these actuators are bonded, as well as the input control energy necessary to suppress these vibrations. The presented method accounts for the effects that the piezoelectric actuators and the bonding layers have on changing the elastic and inertial properties of the flexible beams. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the application of the MIMSC method and to demonstrate the effect of the physical and geometrical properties of the bonding layer on the dynamic performance of the actively controlled beams. The obtained results emphasize the importance of the devised method in designing more realistic active control systems for flexible beams, in particular, and large flexible structures in general

A Specific Methodology of Creep Compensation for piezoelectric Actuators by Open-loop control

Piezoelectric actuators exhibit creep behavior in open-loop operation, which may lead to unaffordable errors in high precision static positioning systems. An inversion-based compensation strategy by open-loop control is presented for reducing creep effect. The approach utilizes a nonlinear viscoelastic model to portray creep phenomenon, which consists of a linear spring, a nonlinear dashpot and a series of nonlinear Voigt elements. It is shown that for the presented creep model the step responses are very similar to the piezoelectric actuators. In order to compensate creep effect, a concept of voltage relaxation in piezoelectric actuators is proposed. And the voltage relaxation model tantamount to the inverse creep model is derived using a PID closed-loop control system. Experimental results prove that, by insertion of voltage relaxation model in open-loop operation, creep effect is attenuated markedly in piezoelectric actuators

Enhanced optical coherence vibration tomography for subnanoscale-displacement-resolution calibration of piezoelectric actuators

We report a subnanoscale-displacement-resolution optical coherence vibration tomography (SOCVT) systemfor real-time calibration of piezoelectric actuators. The calibrations of the actuators at nanoscale or microscale displacement ranges were performed by varying the input voltage over the entire range in the ascending and descending directions. The computational and experimental results demonstrated that the developed SOCVT could be used to characterizethe dynamic hysteretic behaviour, nonlinear effect, and impulsive behaviour of piezoelectric actuators. The SOCVT technique is non-contact and non-invasive in nature, making it ideal for real-time and in situ ultra-precision calibration of piezoelectric actuators, which are widely used in active vibration control and nanopositioning

Vibration control in plates by uniformly distributed PZT actuators interconnected via electric networks

In this paper a novel device aimed at controlling the mechanical vibrations of plates by means of a set of electrically-interconnected piezoelectric actuators is described. The actuators are embedded uniformly in the plate wherein they connect every node of an electric network to ground, thus playing the two-fold role of capacitive element in the electric network and of couple suppliers. A mathematical model is introduced to describe the propagation of electro-mechanical waves in the device; its validity is restricted to the case of wave-forms with wave-length greater than the dimension of the piezoelectric actuators used. A self-resonance criterion is established which assures the possibility of electro-mechanical energy exchange. Finally the problem of vibration control in simply supported and clamped plates is addressed; the optimal net-impedance is determined. The results indicate that the proposed device can improve the performances of piezoelectric actuationComment: 22 page

Sliding mode control based piezoelectric actuator control

In this paper a method for piezoelectric stack actuator control is proposed. In addition a brief discussion about the usage of the same methods for estimation of external force acting to the actuator in contact with environment is made. The method uses sliding mode framework to design both the observer and the controller based on an electromechanical lumped model of the piezoelectric actuator. Furthermore, using a nonlinear differential equation the internal hysteresis disturbance is removed from the total disturbance in an attempt to estimate the external force acting on the actuator. It is then possible to use this external force estimate as a means of force control of the actuator. Simulation and experiments are compared for validating the disturbance and external force estimation technique. Some experiments that incorporate disturbance compensation in a closed-loop SMC control algorithm are also presented to prove the effectiveness of this method in producing high precision motion

A study on high accuracy discrete-time sliding mode control

In this paper a Discrete-Time Sliding-Mode based controller design for high accuracy motion control systems is presented. The controller is designed for a general SISO system with nonlinearity and external disturbance. Closed-Loop behavior of the general system with the proposed control and Lyapunov stability is shown and the error of the closed loop system is proven to be within an o(T2). The proposed controller is applied to a stage driven by a piezo drive that is known to suffer from hysteresis nonlinearity in the control gain. Proposed SMC controller is proven to offer chattering-free motion and rejection of the disturbances represented by hysteresis and the time variation of the piezo drive parameters. As a separate idea to enhance the accuracy of the closed loop system a combination of disturbance rejection method and the SMC controller is explored and its effectiveness is experimentally demonstrated. Closed-loop experiments are presented using PID controller with and without disturbance compensation and Sliding-Mode Controller with and without disturbance compensation for the purpose of comparison
