In this paper, we present a new notional machine de- sign and implementation to help with understanding of pro- gramming and its dynamics for beginning learners. The no- tional machine offers an abstraction of the physical machine designed for comprehension and learning purposes. We in- troduce the notional machine and a graphical notation for its representation.     Difficulties in learning programming are a constant concern in engineering courses. In many research studies involving the learning programming must of the solutions presented, from the beginning of the first programming languages, was to apply different type of problems analysis. Literature relating to the understanding of nature of learning programming skills has been focused explicitly on the teaching methodology and few of them focus on abilities, characteristics and knowledge acquired over the life cycle of learning programming in each student. Most of the students enrolled in engineering courses, where programming is a crucial competence, never had the opportunity to develop skills of computational thinking. In this paper, we focus our work on the learning programming developing and applying a set of exercises where students with more difficulties can express and develop their skills in computational thinking. In order to understand some programming students difficulties we have create a set of exercises, and apply it to a pre-programming course, that allows teachers to understand how students analyse and comprehend aspects such as visualization, spatial interpretation and physical manipulation. This paper also reports on results obtained from a class experiment where Memory Transfer Language was used by students to learn programming. All the exercises must be resolved without any type of technology, designed as a ne-course (no electronic course) for learning programming

    The Impact of Teaching Programming by using Scratch on Self-motivation towards Learning Programming for Primary School Students in Riyadh

    The study aimed to measure the effect of teaching programming using Scratch on Self-motivation towards learning programming for primary school students in Riyadh. Twenty-five 4th-grade students participated in the study. A quasi-experimental design was applied. Pre and post-tests were utilized using a motivational scale towards learning programming designed by the researchers to include three dimensions: perseverance, ambition and enjoyment. Participants received Scratch lessons for the duration of a semester. The results showed significant differences in favor of the post-test in all dimensions of the scale. In addition, students' self-motivation towards learning programming has improved by 22.8% in the average rate of the scale. The results showed the improvement rate of students' self-motivation towards learning programming to the scale axes (perseverance, ambition, enjoyment) as follows: 20.9%, 23.8%, and 23.6% respectively. Moreover, the order of items and the improvement rate were different according to the pre-test and post-test; although all the items were positive

The idea of learning programming languages and improving programming skills through programming game characters’ behavior is described. The learning course description rules for using in games are suggested. The concept is implemented in a game for learning C# programming language. A common game architecture is modified for using in the educational game. The game engine is built on the base of the graphical engine Ogre3D and extended with game logic. The game has been developed as an industry level commercial product and is planned for sale to educational institutions

    A review of Australasian investigations into problem solving and the novice programmer

    This Australasian focused review compares a number of recent studies that have identified difficulties encountered by novices while learning programming and problem solving. These studies have shown that novices are not performing at expected levels and many novices have only a fragile knowledge of programming, which may prevent them from learning and applying problem solving strategies. The review goes on to explore proposals for explicitly incorporating problem solving strategy instruction into introductory programming curricula and assessment, in an attempt to produce improved learning outcomes for novices. Finally, directions suggested by the reviewed studies are gathered and some unanswered questions are raised
