Optimal Union-Find in Constraint Handling Rules

Constraint Handling Rules (CHR) is a committed-choice rule-based language that was originally intended for writing constraint solvers. In this paper we show that it is also possible to write the classic union-find algorithm and variants in CHR. The programs neither compromise in declarativeness nor efficiency. We study the time complexity of our programs: they match the almost-linear complexity of the best known imperative implementations. This fact is illustrated with experimental results.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP

    Handling employee problems

The most effective means of handling employee problems is to recognize and eliminate their probable cause before they arise. The authors of other papers included in these proceedings have provided guidance for avoiding manager/employee problems on a daily basis. If the conditions they discuss are monitored, there should be little need for "handling employee problems." In order to identify a problem, a supervisor must know and be sensitive to employees' needs as well as have a comprehensive view of organizational goals. The way in which each employee's role fits into the overall plan of service should be well defined. With this information, an insightful manager can identify both real and potential problems and deal with them appropriately.published or submitted for publicatio

    Operational semantics for signal handling

Signals are a lightweight form of interprocess communication in Unix. When a process receives a signal, the control flow is interrupted and a previously installed signal handler is run. Signal handling is reminiscent both of exception handling and concurrent interleaving of processes. In this paper, we investigate different approaches to formalizing signal handling in operational semantics, and compare them in a series of examples. We find the big-step style of operational semantics to be well suited to modelling signal handling. We integrate exception handling with our big-step semantics of signal handling, by adopting the exception convention as defined in the Definition of Standard ML. The semantics needs to capture the complex interactions between signal handling and exception handling.Comment: In Proceedings EXPRESS/SOS 2012, arXiv:1208.244

    Air handling system optimisation

    Get PDF
Often each floor of a building has an air handling system consisting of a plant room, ducting and equipment such as fans and heaters. The cost of the system consists of the capital cost of the equipment and the operating cost to satisfy the thermal loads. An efficient method is required for evaluating the operating costs when the configuration of the system is specified and the thermal loads are known. The operating cost of a particular configuration are obtained by solving a nonlinear program. The method is efficient since it consists of solving a sequence of single period models

    Large aircraft handling qualities

The short period frequency requirements of MIL-F-8785C are applicable to the very large transport aircraft simulated. The large aircraft simulated meet the requirements of NASA CR-159236 for effective time delay and pitch transient peak ratio. However, the requirements of this reference for the effective rise time parameter are believed to be too convservative for very large transport aircraft. Data obtained to date as well as other data indicate that MIL-SPEC requirements for the parameter t(phi=30 degrees) are too conservative for very large transport aircraft. The results of the present study indicate that t(phi=30 degrees) of less than 6 sec should result in ""acceptable'' roll response characteristics, and t(phi=30 degrees) of less than 4.0 sec should result in ""satisfactory'' roll response
