    Clave para la identificación de especies en la familia Diatrypaceae Xylariales, Ascomycota). El presente trabajo brinda una clave para la identificación de las especies y/o complejo de especies, octosporados de la familia Diatrypaceae sobre la base de caracteres morfológicos. Adicionalmente se propone dos nuevos sinónimos para Diatrype chilensis Henn y Eutypella murrayae Syd.A dichotomous key for 74 species and/or species complex of Diatrypaceae is presented based on morphological characters.     Connectivity, neutral theories and the assessment of species vulnerability to global change in temperate estuaries

    One of the main adaptation strategies to global change scenarios, aiming to preserve ecosystem functioning and biodiversity, is to maximise ecosystem resilience. The resilience of a species metapopulation can be improved by facilitating connectivity between local populations, which will prevent demographic stochasticity and inbreeding. The objective of this investigation is to estimate the degree of connectivity among estuarine species along the north-eastern Iberian coast, in order to assess community vulnerability to global change scenarios. To address this objective, two connectivity proxy types have been used based upon genetic and ecological drift processes: 1) DNA markers for the bivalve cockle (Cerastoderma edule) and seagrass Zostera noltei, and 2) the decrease in the number of species shared between two sites with geographic distance; neutral biodiversity theory predicts that dispersal limitation modulates this decrease, and this has been explored in estuarine plants and macroinvertebrates. Results indicate dispersal limitation for both saltmarsh plants and seagrass beds community and Z. noltei populations; this suggests they are especially vulnerable to expected climate changes on their habitats. In contrast, unstructured spatial pattern found in macroinvertebrate communities and in C. edule genetic populations in the area suggests that estuarine soft-bottom macroinvertebrates with planktonic larval dispersal strategies may have a high resilience capacity to moderate changes within their habitats. Our findings can help environmental managers to prioritise the most vulnerable species and habitats to be restored

    Changes in the algal composition, bacterial metabolic activity and element content of biofilms developed on artificial substrata in the early phase of colonization

    Changes in the algal composition and metabolic profiles of bacterial communities as well as the inorganic components were studied on artificial substrata during the early phase of biofilm formation under laboratory conditions in September 2002 and 2003. Sterile Perspex and polished quartz glass discs with a diameter of 3 cm were placed into a Perspex rack, which was immersed vertically in an aquarium containing water from a shallow soda lake. The temperature was kept constant and sufficient oxygen supply was provided. The samples were illuminated for 12 hours a day. Periphyton communities were sampled from 2 to 126 hours of exposure. In both experiments, the alteration of the number of algal species and cells as well as the carbon source utilization of microbial communities was logarithmic. In the two years, considerable differences were revealed in the magnitude of algal cell numbers. The proportion of benthic and planktonic algae showed an undulating pattern in the second experiment. One of the dominant benthic species was the diatom Achnanthidium minutissimum Kütz., while that of the planktonic, the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa Kütz. During the experiments an increase in the bacterial activities could be observed; the higher the microbial diversity and abundance that was detected, the more BIOLOG carbon sources were utilized. The examined element contents indicated interactions among algae and bacteria in the biofilms from the beginning of the colonization processes

    Indexing nature: Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) and his fact-gathering strategies

    Early modern naturalists were faced with what has been termed the ‘first bio-information crisis’. A key figure in resolving this crisis was the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1788). This paper will focus on Linnaeus’s day-to-day working routines on the basis of manuscript material held at the Linnean Society(London). What this material shows is that Linnaeus had to manage a conflict between the need to bring factual information into a fixed order for purposes of retrieval, and the need to integrate new information into that order. A way out of this dilemma was to keep information on particular subjects on separate sheets, which could be reshuffled and complemented by additional sheets. It is only very late in his life, however, that Linnaeus realized the full potential of this technique, by inventing what look like index cards. What we thus hope to show in this paper is that one of the main cognitive advantages commonly assigned to writing – the possibility to abstract words and statements from their context and rearrange them freely in lists,tables and filing systems – had to prevail over considerable practical and psychological obstacles. What seems an obvious thing to do in hindsight, e.g. to work with something like index cards, had to be learned through an incessant, painstaking process of experimentation, fact-gathering, and reorganization

    Current state of the Prunetalia spinosae communities in the centre and south of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain, Portugal)

    This paper re-examines the Rhamno-Prunetea class in the centre and south of the Iberian Peninsula, especially in Andalusia. The paper also deals with the alliances Pruno-Rubion ulmifolii Lonicero-Berberidion hispanicae in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, and Berberidion vulgaris (Berberidenion seroi) in the area of Cuenca. Our analysis of 225 relevés arranged in 22 phytosociological tables helped us to re-organize the available information and subsequently propose three associations and two subassociations: Clematido vitalbae-Rosetum micranthae nova; Berberido hispanicae- Buxetum sempervirentis nova; Roso siculae-Berberidetum hispanicae Mota nova subas. prunetosum ramburii Mota nova; Lonicero arboreae-Rhamnetum cathartici Martínez-Parras and Molero 1983 subas. prunetosum ranburii nova. As a result of the study, a total of 18 syntaxa with the rank of association and four with the rank of subassociation are proposed for the south of the Iberian Peninsula
