Influence of Portfolio Management in Decision-Making
Purpose: Today’s manufacturing facilities are challenged by highly customized products and just in time manufacturing and delivery of these products. In this study, a batch scheduling problem has been addressed to enable on-time completion of customer orders in a lean manufacturing environment. The problem is optimizing the partitioning of product components into batches and scheduling of the resulting batches where each customer order is received as a set of products made of various components. Design/methodology/approach: Three different mathematical models for minimization of total earliness and tardiness of customer orders are developed to provide on-time completion of customer orders and also, to avoid excess final product inventory. The first model is a non-linear integer programming model whereas the second is a linearized version of the first. Finally, to solve larger sized instances of the problem, an alternative linear integer model is presented. Findings: Computational study using a suit set of test instances showed that the alternative linear integer model is able to solve all test instances in varying sizes within quite shorter computer times compared to the other two models. It has also been showed that the alternative model is able to solve moderate sized real-world problems. Originality/value: The problem under study differentiates from existing batch scheduling problems in the literature owing to the inclusion of new circumstances that are present in real-world applications. Those are: customer orders consisting of multi-products made of multi-parts, processing of all parts of the same product from different orders in the same batch, and delivering the orders only when all related products are completed. This research also contributes to the literature of batch scheduling problem by presenting new optimization models.Peer Reviewe

A batch scheduling model for a three-stage flow shop with job and batch processors considering a sampling inspection to minimize expected total actual flow time
Purpose: This research develops a batch scheduling model for a three-stage flow shop with job processors in the first and second stages and a batch processor in the third stage. The model integrates production process activities and a product inspection activity to minimize the expected total actual flow time. Design/methodology/approach: The problem of batch scheduling for a three-stage flow shop is formulated as a mathematical model, and a heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. This model applies backward scheduling to accommodate the objective of minimizing the expected total actual flow time. Findings: This research has proposed a batch scheduling model for a three-stage flow shop with job and batch processors to produce multiple items and an algorithm to solve the model. The objective is to minimize total actual time. The resulting production batches can be sequenced between all types of products to minimize idle time, and the batch processor capacity affects the sample size and indirectly affects the production batch size. Manufacturing planning and control systems are currently dominated by systems based upon Material Requirements Planning (MRP). MRP systems have a number of fundamental flaws. A potential alternative to MRP systems is suggested after research into the economic batch scheduling problem.
Based on the ideas of economic batch scheduling, and enhanced through artificial intelligence techniques, an alternative approach to manufacturing planning and control is developed. A framework for future research on this alternative to MRP is presented

Optimizing production scheduling of steel plate hot rolling for economic load dispatch under time-of-use electricity pricing
Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity pricing provides an opportunity for industrial
users to cut electricity costs. Although many methods for Economic Load
Dispatch (ELD) under TOU pricing in continuous industrial processing have been
proposed, there are still difficulties in batch-type processing since power
load units are not directly adjustable and nonlinearly depend on production
planning and scheduling. In this paper, for hot rolling, a typical batch-type
and energy intensive process in steel industry, a production scheduling
optimization model for ELD is proposed under TOU pricing, in which the
objective is to minimize electricity costs while considering penalties caused
by jumps between adjacent slabs. A NSGA-II based multi-objective production
scheduling algorithm is developed to obtain Pareto-optimal solutions, and then
TOPSIS based multi-criteria decision-making is performed to recommend an
optimal solution to facilitate filed operation. Experimental results and
analyses show that the proposed method cuts electricity costs in production,
especially in case of allowance for penalty score increase in a certain range.
Further analyses show that the proposed method has effect on peak load

INTEGER RELAXATION ON BINARY QUADRATIC PROGRAMMING FOR BATCHING AND SEQUENCING IN SINGLE FORMULATION TO MINIMIZE TOTAL ACTUAL FLOW TIMES CRITERIA
This paper examines batch scheduling problem that has batching and sequencing in single formulation
for multiple-item case. The first step is to develop a model for single item single resource discussed in Zahedi
(2008). The model determined batch sizes and their schedule simultaneously in single item case. This paper
develops the model and algorithm for multiple-item case. The model functions to minimize total actual flow
times. An algorithm for the model is developed using a relaxation of the binary constraints. The binary values
for the decision variables are obtained from steps provided in algorithm. A numerical experience showing
characteristics of this problem is presented
Single machine batch scheduling with release times
Motivated by a high-throughput logging system, we investigate the single machine scheduling problem with batching, where jobs have release times and processing times, and batches require a setup time. Our objective is to minimize the total flow time, in the online setting.
