Did the 2008 global economic crisis affect large firms in Europe?
The paper analyses the spatial distribution of the largest global corporations found on the Forbes Global 2000 list and with headquarters in Europe. The analysis includes the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis on changes in corporate financial performance. Research has shown that London has the largest economic potential in Europe, while companies in Central and Eastern European cities exhibit high rates of growth. The crisis triggered a decentralisation of corporate headquarters’ location resulting in more cities with corporate headquarters
Central and Eastern European cities in globalized world
The purpose of the study is to determine the position of major corporations located
in the cities of Central and Eastern Europe. Analyzes are also dynamics of city's growth in relation
to their international connectivities. Therefore, the study was conducted using data obtained from
the Forbes Global 2000. For the largest companies analyzed data on revenues, profits, market
value, asset value and divided by the sectors. The analyzes related to the years 2006 and 2012. The
study uses an indicator of normalization index by which determined the ranking of cities where
there is at least one headquarter of corporation mentioned on the Forbes Global 2000 list. The
results show the highest position of the following cities: Tokyo, New York, London, Paris and
Beijing. Asian cities characterized by the highest growth rate. In turn, the analysis of statistical
data show weakening the position of cities located throughout the United States. In the case of the
region Central and Eastern European cities located in this area present a relatively low value of
the examined indicator; the only exception is Moscow, a relatively high located in the hierarchy. A
positive feature of cities in the region, however, is the positive dynamics of their growth, which in
perspective can make that more of them have a chance to join the ranks of major cities in the world
Economic resilience of the command and control function of cities in Central and Eastern Europe
The authors propose a new approach to the analysis of cities in a time of potential major crisis in a dominant sector consisting of the largest firms generating the command and control function of a city. This purpose is served by the creation of the Central and Eastern European Economic Centre Index (CEEECI), which reflects the potential of each studied city and its development and/or fields of economic specialisation of its largest companies capable of generating regional command and control (C&C) functions of cities. Research has shown that the C&C functions of cities such as Warsaw, Prague, and Budapest are the most resistant to economic crisis of the dominant sector. More than half of the analysed cities are economically dominated by the consumer business and transportation and manufacturing sectors
Eastern European cities as command and control centres in a time of economic crisis
This article describes the command and control function of eastern European cities based on the financial performance of the largest corporations with headquarters in the region and the impact of selected sectors on this function. Research has shown that, despite the global economic crisis of 2008–2012, the revenue and net income of the companies studied have increased to some extent. Currently, the strongest “command and control cities” in eastern Europe are Warsaw and Prague. The sector that exerts the greatest influence on the regional command and control function in eastern Europe is the consumer business and transportation sector. The economic crisis has also produced a geographical pattern in eastern Europe that runs counter to current global trends: companies in the region currently tend to concentrate their headquarters in fewer cities, which is becoming common in other parts of the world. The article employs a standardization method based on the mean and standard deviation of financial values for each corporation studied
Determinanty rozwoju obszaru metropolitalnego Ciudad de Gwatemala
A metropolitan area is a region whose development is determined by an array of different factors ranging from environmental, social, and economic factors to all types of political and administrative conditions. The process of metropolitan growth is closely associated with globalization processes and is most clearly apparent in countries that have joined the global economy in recent decades. The article is based on a demarcation where the AMCG includes eight boroughs. This is the optimal version that is found most often in the literature. The paper includes an analysis of barriers facing the Guatemala City metropolitan area as well as an attempt at identifying opportunities that could help the AMCG develop more rapidly and in a more comprehensive manner. A number of indicators have been taken into consideration. These include the level of social development, the availability of services, access to public transportation, as well as the region’s tourist potential. The paper identifies boroughs that may become part of the AMCG in the future as well as those that are already a part of it but need to undergo social or economic transformation.
The dimensions of the standard of living in Poland based on selected indicators
The aim of the research was to analyze selected aspects of the standard of living in 66
geographic sub-regions in Poland. The research in this paper covers six aspects of the standard of living. Important needs include needs associated with individuals’ place of residence (housing conditions, environmental issues, etc…), health, education, and cultural interests. Hence, a total of 12 measures (indices) were utilized for all the Polish sub-regions of interest for the period 2002/2003–2009/2010. Values of the six indices of the standard of living in Poland vary spatially. In most cases, however, a clear trend of lower values can be observed in sub-regions surrounding major cities. This is especially true of healthcare and cultural services. The comprehensive index bears this out and points to a lowering in the standard of living in sub-regions surrounding major cities in Poland
Economic crisis versus control and managerial functions of cities in age of globalization
Sektor produktów konsumenckich (consumerstaples) i surowcowy (materials) przeważał w Ameryce Północnej, a informatyczny (informationtechnology) i finansowy (financials) w Europie. Z kolei w Azji wystąpiło większe zróżnicowanie dominującego sektora. In this paper, the authors attempt to determine the extent and manner of changes in the position of a city during a deep crisis of a sector dominant in this city/region. Crisis is understood here as a deterioration in the financial performance of companies of a sector when, as a result of the crisis, corporations from the sector suffer a significant decline. To achieve the research objective, a synthetic indicator of comprehensive sectoral development of cities is developed. The indicator illustrates the position of a city removal of the dominant sector. With this approach, information can be generated about the potential of the centre and about its comprehensive development, or strong specialisation. It was noticed that in nearly 50% of the cities, the financial and material sectors dominated. Regional variation of the dominant sector was observed. Consumer staples and materials prevailed in North America, while the IT and financial sectors were dominant in Europe. Greater diversification of the dominant sector was reported for Asia. in terms of the value of corporate headquarters located in the city, by sector, and their stability after thePiotr Raźniak: [email protected]ławomir Dorocki: [email protected] Winiarczyk-Raźniak: araź[email protected] Piotr Raźniak - Instytut Geografii, Uniwersytet Pedagogiczny w Krakowiedr Sławomir Dorocki - Instytut Geografii, Uniwersytet Pedagogiczny w Krakowiedr Anna Winiarczyk-Raźniak - Instytut Geografii, Uniwersytet Pedagogiczny w KrakowieAlderson A. A városok globális irányítás és ellenőrzés funkciójának változása 2006 és 2018 között: endogén fejlődés és relokáció
funkcióját, szemléltetve ezzel a városok pozícióját a világgazdaságban.
