3D UK? 3D History and the Absent British Pioneers
The recent television ‘rediscovery’ of a small cohort of 1950s British 3D films (and the producers who made them) has offered a new route into considering how the historical stories told about 3D film have focused almost exclusively on the American experience, eliding other national contexts. This article challenges both the partiality of existing academic histories of 3D, and the specific popular media narratives that have been constructed around the British 3D pioneers. Offering a rebuttal of those narratives and an expansion of them based around primary archival research, the article considers how the British 3D company Stereo Techniques created a different business and production model based around non-fiction short 3D films that stand in contrast to the accepted view of 3D as an American feature film novelty. Through an exploration of the depiction (and absence) of these 3D pioneers from existing media histories, the article argues for a revision to both 3D studies and British cinema history
Environmental Sensing by Wearable Device for Indoor Activity and Location Estimation
We present results from a set of experiments in this pilot study to
investigate the causal influence of user activity on various environmental
parameters monitored by occupant carried multi-purpose sensors. Hypotheses with
respect to each type of measurements are verified, including temperature,
humidity, and light level collected during eight typical activities: sitting in
lab / cubicle, indoor walking / running, resting after physical activity,
climbing stairs, taking elevators, and outdoor walking. Our main contribution
is the development of features for activity and location recognition based on
environmental measurements, which exploit location- and activity-specific
characteristics and capture the trends resulted from the underlying
physiological process. The features are statistically shown to have good
separability and are also information-rich. Fusing environmental sensing
together with acceleration is shown to achieve classification accuracy as high
as 99.13%. For building applications, this study motivates a sensor fusion
paradigm for learning individualized activity, location, and environmental
preferences for energy management and user comfort.Comment: submitted to the 40th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial

PROCESSOR CACHE SNAPSHOT AND RESTORE
A system is described that improves performance in processes that are resumed by providing a cache that stores information that can immediately be used by the process when the process resumes. A processor may store a snapshot of a cache for a process to memory when the process yields to another process. When performance of the process is later resumed on the processor, the processor may retrieve the cache for the process from the memory and then resume the process
Lessons in failure: applying an organizational learning framework to understanding attitudes towards failure in development
This paper applies an organizational learning framework to explore attitudes towards failure in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) development sector. It draws on 35 key-informant interviews, contextualized by organizational theory and existing scholarship on failure in development, to understand the challenges faced by WASH practitioners in identifying failure, analyzing failure, and deliberate experimentation. Through interrogating past and present initiatives for publicizing failure in development, this paper digs deeper into the successes, obstacles, and lessons learnt from mainstreaming failure into organizational practices. It then synthesizes these findings to advance a 3-tier conceptual map for organizations to build an enabling environment for learning from failure in development

“English is a mishmash of everything”: examining the language attitudes and teaching beliefs of British Asian multilingual teachers
The author reports on a qualitative investigation of the language attitudes of multilingual British South Asian English language teachers. Data are drawn from both interviews and focus groups to demonstrate the participants underlying conception of language and their awareness and attitudes toward Indian English and how they coalesce their “duty” as English language teachers and their beliefs about language variation. The author observes underlying differences in the attitudes of first- and second-generation migrants and argues that this is related to their early experiences of English language variation and their exposure to either single- or dual-language ideologies. Therefore, the author supports other research that attitudes related to “correct” language is ingrained in childhood experiences. It is also argued that changes are required in current teacher training to raise awareness of World Englishes and English as a lingua franca to equip teachers with the necessary skills to respond to a new global linguistic landscape
