The silenced voices of architectural discourse: promoting inclusion through qualitative research
Contemporary architectural discourse is primarily framed by institutional hegemony. Scholarly works written in a voice derived from this privilege inherently exclude the voices of those untrained individuals who inhabit the built environment. The field of architecture, most notably in the AIA's policies and positions, calls for more diverse viewpoints and a more complex understanding of the public's relationship with architecture. It is not possible to make this complexity apparent through the monolithic viewpoints of institutional scholarship. This essay explores a variety of more inclusive research methods established in the social sciences under the banner of qualitative research. We focus on how qualitative research satisfies contemporary research expectations more effectively than positivist institutional scholarship and how qualitative research has a specific congruency with the field of architecture
Clapper v. Amnesty International and Data Privacy Litigation: Is a Change to the Law “Certainly Impending”?
On December 19, 2013, the retailer Target announced that unauthorized third parties had gained access to its customer payment information. While Target originally estimated that the security breach affected 40 million of its customers, a subsequent investigation revealed that anywhere from 70 to 110 million people—almost one in three Americans—may have had their sensitive payment information stolen. In response, the retailer offered free credit monitoring services and assured affected customers that they would not be responsible for fraudulent charges made with their payment information
Web-Based Instruction & Online Delivery Of Classes: Where Are We Now?
The literature on Web-based instruction (WBI) is reviewed, focusing initially on the terminology, history, and commentary (pro and con) related to the topic. The advantages and disadvantages associated with WBI are then discussed and an overview of the empirical work on WBI, paying particular attention to studies on student satisfaction and learning outcomes, is provided
An adjudicated hermeneutic single-case efficacy design study of experiential therapy for panic/phobia
This paper illustrates the application of an adjudicated form of Hermeneutic Single Case Efficacy Design (HSCED), a critical-reflective method for inferring change and therapeutic influence in single therapy cases. The client was a 61 year-old European-American male diagnosed with panic and bridge phobia. He was seen for 23 sessions of individual Process-Experiential/Emotion-Focused Therapy. In this study, affirmative and skeptic teams of researchers developed opposing arguments regarding whether the client changed over therapy and whether therapy was responsible for these changes. Three judges representing different theoretical orientations then assessed data and arguments, rendering judgments in favor of the affirmative side. We discuss clinical implications and recommendations for the future interpretive case study research
Skin Friction at Very High Reynolds Numbers in the National Transonic Facility
Skin friction coefficients were derived from measurements using standard measurement technologies on an axisymmetric cylinder in the NASA Langley National Transonic Facility (NTF) at Mach numbers from 0.2 to 0.85. The pressure gradient was nominally zero, the wall temperature was nominally adiabatic, and the ratio of boundary layer thickness to model diameter within the measurement region was 0.10 to 0.14, varying with distance along the model. Reynolds numbers based on momentum thicknesses ranged from 37,000 to 605,000. The measurements approximately doubled the range of available data for flat plate skin friction coefficients. Three different techniques were used to measure surface shear. The maximum error of Preston tube measurements was estimated to be 2.5 percent, while that of Clauser derived measurements was estimated to be approximately 5 percent. Direct measurements by skin friction balance proved to be subject to large errors and were not considered reliable
Synthesis of oxindoles and benozfuranones via oxidation of 2-heterocyclic BMIDAs
The synthesis of functionalized oxindoles and benzofuranones via oxidation of 2-BMIDA indoles and benzofurans, respectively, is described. Interconversion of boron species (BMIDAàBF3K) was necessary to enable oxidation and overcome boronic acid stability issues associated with a difficult BMIDA hydrolysis. Overall, a robust process was developed that allowed access to a small library of oxindole and benzofuranone products and facilitated the step-efficient synthesis of biologically-active compounds containing the oxindole pharmacophore
