Relação entre as concentrações plasmáticas e eritrocitárias de quinina em crianças com malária por Plasmodium falciparum não complicada em terapia via oral
We determined the relationship between plasma and red blood cell concentrations of quinine in children with uncomplicated falciparum malaria from an endemic area of Amazonian region. Quinine was determined by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. In the steady state the ratio between plasma and red blood cell quinine concentration was 1.89 ± 1.25 ranging from 1.05 to 2.34. This result demonstrated that quinine do not concentrate in red blood cell of Brazilian children and characterize the absence of interracial difference in this relationship.
An overview of geological originated materials as a trend for adsorption in wastewater treatment
Adsorption is a unit operation widely used for the tertiary treatment of the most diverse effluents, whose mechanism is based on removing recalcitrant compounds from the organic and inorganic origin. In this process, choosing a suitable adsorbent is a fundamental point. This review article focuses on the adsorbents with natural geological origin: minerals, clays, geopolymers, and even wastes resulted from mining activity. Therefore, over 450 articles and research papers were explored. These materials' main sources are described, and their characteristics, composition, and intrinsic properties are related to adsorption. Herein, we discuss the effects of several process parameters, such as pH, temperature, pollutant, and adsorbent concentration. Furthermore, equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamic aspects are also addressed, and relevant regeneration prospects and final disposal. Finally, some suggestions and perspectives on applying these adsorbents in wastewater treatment are presented as future trends
Reproduction of the blue jack mackerel, Trachurus picturatus, in western Portugal: microscopic gonad analysis reveals indeterminate fecundity and skipped spawning patterns
Blue jack mackerel, Trachurus picturatus, is the fifth most landed fish species in mainland Portugal, but
information on its reproductive biology is scarce. From September 2018 to August 2019, 626 specimens
were collected from commercial vessels to clarify the reproductive strategy of the T. picturatus population
off the west coast of Portugal. The proportion and length range of males and females were similar. Only
three of the specimens collected were categorized as immature, indicating that the fish caught in the
fishery are primarily mature. The spawning season lasted from late January until the end of March, with
gonadosomatic indices being similar for males and females. Fecundity was indeterminate, and estimated
batch fecundity ranged between 6,798 (at 25.4 cm TL) and 302,358 oocytes (at 33.8 cm TL). The low
number of females showing direct evidence of imminent or recent spawning suggests a low number
of spawning events. In addition, 12.7% of females were considered non-reproductive due to ovary
abnormalities including parasitic infection by Kudoa species, atretic structures and skipped spawning
events. This study highlights the importance of accounting for skipped spawning events and ovary
abnormalities in the management of species fisheries.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Description Of The Hemipenial Morphology Of Tupinambis Quadrilineatus Manzani And Abe, 1997 (squamata, Teiidae) And New Records From Piauí, Brazil
Few data are available on the morphology of the hemipenis of teiid lizards, especially those of the recentlydefined genus Tupinambis, a widely-distributed group of large-bodied lizards. This study provides an illustrated description of the hemipenis of Tupinambis quadrilineatus, which is similar to that of other representatives of the Tupinambinae subfamily. New records of the species from the state of Piauí, in northeastern Brazil, are also presented. © Marcélia Basto da Silva et al.3616172Avila-Pires, T.C.S., (1995) Lizards of Brazilian Amazonia Phonon-mediated anisotropic superconductivity in the Y and Lu nickel borocarbides
We present scanning tunneling spectroscopy and microscopy measurements at low
temperatures in the borocarbide materials RNi2B2C (R=Y, Lu). The characteristic
strong coupling structure due to the pairing interaction is unambiguously
resolved in the superconducting density of states. It is located at the
superconducting gap plus the energy corresponding to a phonon mode identified
in previous neutron scattering experiments. These measurements also show that
this mode is coupled to the electrons through a highly anisotropic
electron-phonon interaction originated by a nesting feature of the Fermi
surface. Our experiments, from which we can extract a large electron-phonon
coupling parameter lambda (between 0.5 and 0.8), demonstrate that this
anisotropic electron-phonon coupling has an essential contribution to the
pairing interaction. The tunneling spectra show an anisotropic s-wave
superconducting gap function.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
