    An occam Style Communications System for UNIX Networks

    This document describes the design of a communications system which provides occam style communications primitives under a Unix environment, using TCP/IP protocols, and any number of other protocols deemed suitable as underlying transport layers. The system will integrate with a low overhead scheduler/kernel without incurring significant costs to the execution of processes within the run time environment. A survey of relevant occam and occam3 features and related research is followed by a look at the Unix and TCP/IP facilities which determine our working constraints, and a description of the T9000 transputer's Virtual Channel Processor, which was instrumental in our formulation. Drawing from the information presented here, a design for the communications system is subsequently proposed. Finally, a preliminary investigation of methods for lightweight access control to shared resources in an environment which does not provide support for critical sections, semaphores, or busy waiting, is made. This is presented with relevance to mutual exclusion problems which arise within the proposed design. Future directions for the evolution of this project are discussed in conclusion

    Understanding the economic contribution of tourism in Malta : a literature review

    The paper presents a critical assessment of the key studies which present empirical estimates for the contribution of the tourism sector to the Maltese economy. The observed discrepancies in the estimates derived from these studies has in part led to a situation in which there is an effective widespread divergence relating to the specific economic contribution of tourism in Malta. The paper evaluates the estimates derived by these key studies in the context of both the strengths and weaknesses of their respective modelling frameworks, which range from the construction of tourism satellite accounts, to input-output models and computable general equilibrium modelling, as well as an evaluation of the overall quality of the data utilized. The paper therefore attempts to identify and clarify the main causes behind the observed variations in the resulting estimates and through a systematic comparative assessment also aid in the providing a further understanding of the potential economic contribution of tourism to the Maltese economy. On the basis of this assessment it is suggested that the contribution of tourism to the Maltese economy should account for approximately 5.7% of total gross value added when taking account solely direct effects, 12% once indirect effects are included and roughly 17% accounting also for the induced effects. Furthermore, on the basis of this assessment the paper highlights the need for further research in this area given the significance of the tourism sector to the small island economy of Malta.peer-reviewe

    Design activity in Malta : a macro-economic analysis

    The present economic analysis focuses on design and innovation. It compares Malta to leading design innovators in the EU, namely Germany, Italy, Sweden and Finland. Findings include positioning of Malta in relation to these focus countries, overall, by firm size and by sector. Furthermore, manufacturing fares timidly in design innovation both internally in relation to other sectors, and also when compared to other EU Member States. Within services, IT and consultancy are relatively high design innovation spenders, whereas financial services come in at the lower end. The analysis also evaluates the multiplier effects of design services and the inter-industry linkages involved in design activity.peer-reviewe

    EUROMOD update : feasibility study : Malta (Tax-Benefit Systems 2007-2010)

    The purpose of this study is to examine the technical feasibility of micro-simulation model application for the analysis of impact of policy on social integration from the national as well as from the EU perspective. This is the first time that Malta’s tax-benefit system has been analysed from the angle of the main elements of this system implying the policy rules that are underlying the entitlement criteria defining them. This was an opportunity for the main players in this field to work in synergy on this vital issue: the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity, in charge of social benefits, Ministry of Finance responsible for the fiscal policy and income tax system in particular, and the National Statistics Office tasked with income data collection based on the EU-SILC methodology. This Feasibility Study describes the situation as it was in year 2007 and the major changes that have taken place in 2008 and 2009 and 2010. Firstly, the study describes the main elements of the tax-benefit system namely: income, income tax brackets, capital resources and Social Security contributions. The second section of the study illustrates the main sources of data to be used for modelling purposes and also shows the examples of the calculation of income tax and social benefits. It has been agreed that the EU SILC 2008 data would be used, for income element since Malta has joined this system of data collection way back in 2005. The third section of the study firstly outlines the qualities and limitations of the input data set. This section also focuses on specificities of Malta’s data collection and possible difficulties regarding model application. The study points at the possible combinations of sample and population databases. Also, simulation possibilities have been specified for both systems separately. Finally, the non-take up of benefit and the issue of tax and benefit fraud illustrate the situation and the possible unknown element on both sides.peer-reviewe

    Characterization of brain-derived extracellular vesicle lipids in Alzheimer's disease

    Lipid dyshomeostasis is associated with the most common form of dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD). Substantial progress has been made in identifying positron emission tomography and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers for AD, but they have limited use as front-line diagnostic tools. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are released by all cells and contain a subset of their parental cell composition, including lipids. EVs are released from the brain into the periphery, providing a potential source of tissue and disease specific lipid biomarkers. However, the EV lipidome of the central nervous system is currently unknown and the potential of brain-derived EVs (BDEVs) to inform on lipid dyshomeostasis in AD remains unclear. The aim of this study was to reveal the lipid composition of BDEVs in human frontal cortex, and to determine whether BDEVs have an altered lipid profile in AD. Using semi-quantitative mass spectrometry, we describe the BDEV lipidome, covering four lipid categories, 17 lipid classes and 692 lipid molecules. BDEVs were enriched in glycerophosphoserine (PS) lipids, a characteristic of small EVs. Here we further report that BDEVs are enriched in ether-containing PS lipids, a finding that further establishes ether lipids as a feature of EVs. BDEVs in the AD frontal cortex offered improved detection of dysregulated lipids in AD over global lipid profiling of this brain region. AD BDEVs had significantly altered glycerophospholipid and sphingolipid levels, specifically increased plasmalogen glycerophosphoethanolamine and decreased polyunsaturated fatty acyl containing lipids, and altered amide-linked acyl chain content in sphingomyelin and ceramide lipids relative to CTL. The most prominent alteration was a two-fold decrease in lipid species containing anti-inflammatory/pro-resolving docosahexaenoic acid. The in-depth lipidome analysis provided in this study highlights the advantage of EVs over more complex tissues for improved detection of dysregulated lipids that may serve as potential biomarkers in the periphery

    The Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU)

    The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer of the ESA Athena X-ray observatory. Over a field of view of 5' equivalent diameter, it will deliver X-ray spectra from 0.2 to 12 keV with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV up to 7 keV on similar to 5 '' pixels. The X-IFU is based on a large format array of super-conducting molybdenum-gold Transition Edge Sensors cooled at similar to 90 mK, each coupled with an absorber made of gold and bismuth with a pitch of 249 mu m. A cryogenic anti-coincidence detector located underneath the prime TES array enables the non X-ray background to be reduced. A bath temperature of similar to 50 mK is obtained by a series of mechanical coolers combining 15K Pulse Tubes, 4K and 2K Joule-Thomson coolers which pre-cool a sub Kelvin cooler made of a He-3 sorption cooler coupled with an Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator. Frequency domain multiplexing enables to read out 40 pixels in one single channel. A photon interacting with an absorber leads to a current pulse, amplified by the readout electronics and whose shape is reconstructed on board to recover its energy with high accuracy. The defocusing capability offered by the Athena movable mirror assembly enables the X-IFU to observe the brightest X-ray sources of the sky (up to Crab-like intensities) by spreading the telescope point spread function over hundreds of pixels. Thus the X-IFU delivers low pile-up, high throughput (> 50%), and typically 10 eV spectral resolution at 1 Crab intensities, i.e. a factor of 10 or more better than Silicon based X-ray detectors. In this paper, the current X-IFU baseline is presented, together with an assessment of its anticipated performance in terms of spectral resolution, background, and count rate capability. The X-IFU baseline configuration will be subject to a preliminary requirement review that is scheduled at the end of 2018. The X-IFU will be provided by an international consortium led by France, the Netherlands and Italy, with further ESA member state contributions from Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Spain, Switzerland and contributions from Japan and the United States.Peer reviewe
