    An interactive and user-centered computer system to predict physician’s disease judgments in discharge summaries

    AbstractPurpose: This article describes a formative natural language processing (NLP) system that is grounded in user-centered design, simplification, and transparency of function. Methods: The NLP system was tasked to classify diseases within patient discharge summaries and is evaluated against clinician judgment during the 2008 i2b2 Shared Task competition. Text classification is performed by interactive, fully supervised learning using rule-based processes and support vector machines (SVMs). Results: The macro-averaged F-score for textual (t) and intuitive (i) classification were 0.614(t) and 0.629(i), while micro-averaged F-scores were recorded at 0.966(t) and 0.954(i) for the competition. These results were comparable to the top 10 performing systems. Discussion: The results of this study indicate that an interactive training method, de novo knowledge base with no external data sources, and simplified text mining processes can achieve a comparably high performance in classifying health-related texts. Further research is needed to determine if the user-centered advantages of a NLP system translate into real world benefits

    Constraints on the cosmic string loop collapse fraction from primordial black holes

    A small fraction, f , of cosmic string loops can collapse to form Primordial Black Holes (PBHs). Constraints on the abundance of PBHs can therefore be used to constrain f. We update these calculations, taking into account the PBH extended mass function, and find f < 10 −31 (G”/c 2) ^−3/2. This is roughly one order of magnitude tighter than previous constraints. The improvement from the tighter constraints on the abundance of PBHs is partly offset by refinements to the theoretical calculation of the cosmic string loop formation rate

    Children\u27s Exposure to Violence and the Intersection Between Delinquency and Victimization.

    Presents survey results from the National Survey of Children\u27s Exposure to Violence (NatSCEV) regarding the co-occurrence of victimization and delinquency among children who are exposed to violence. The survey confirms findings of earlier studies that identified three groups of youth: delinquent-victims, primarily delinquent youth, and primarily victim youth. The survey found that the youth identified as delinquent-victims had higher levels of both delinquency and victimization than youth who fell into the other two categories. In addition, youth who had higher levels of delinquency and victimization suffered more adversities, including more mental health symptoms, more inconsistent/harsh parenting and less parental supervision, and less social support. The bulletin further categorizes delinquent youth according to whether they engaged in violence or carried weapons; committed property crimes such as arson, burglary or car theft; or committed minor delinquency such as drug use or truancy. This is the fifth in a series of bulletins that present findings from NatSCEV, the most comprehensive nationwide survey to date of the incidence and prevalence of children’s exposure to violence across all ages, settings, and timeframes

    Energy deficiency, menstrual disturbances, and low bone mass : what do exercising Australian women know about the female athlete triad?

    Purpose: Prevention of the female athlete triad is essential to protect female athletes&rsquo; health. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of regularly exercising adult women in Australia toward eating patterns, menstrual cycles, and bone health. Methods: A total of 191 female exercisers, age 18&ndash;40 yr, engaging in &ge;2 hr/wk of strenuous activity, completed a survey. After 11 surveys were excluded (due to incomplete answers), the 180 participants were categorized into lean-build sports (n = 82; running/ athletics, triathlon, swimming, cycling, dancing, rowing), non-lean-build sports (n = 94; basketball, netball, soccer, hockey, volleyball, tennis, trampoline, squash, Australian football), or gym/fitness activities (n = 4). Results: Mean (&plusmn; SD) training volume was 9.0 &plusmn; 5.5 hr/wk, with participants competing from local up to international level. Only 10% of respondents could name the 3 components of the female athlete triad. Regardless of reported history of stress fracture, 45% of the respondents did not think that amenorrhea (absence of menses for &ge;3 months) could affect bone health, and 22% of those involved in lean-build sports would do nothing if experiencing amenorrhea (vs. 3.2% in non-lean-build sports, p = .005). Lean-build sports, history of amenorrhea, and history of stress fracture were all significantly associated with not taking action in the presence of amenorrhea (all p &lt; .005). Conclusions: Few active Australian women are aware of the detrimental effects of menstrual dysfunction on bone health. Education programs are needed to prevent the female athlete triad and ensure that appropriate actions are taken by athletes when experiencing amenorrhea.<br /

    Western Maine Coastal Current reduces primary production rates, zooplankton abundance and benthic nutrient fluxes in Massachusetts Bay

The definitive version was published in ICES Journal of Marine Science 71 (2014): 1158-1169, doi:10.1093/icesjms/fst195.Primary production was measured from 1992-2010 in Massachusetts Bay and just outside Boston Harbor for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority’s outfall monitoring program. In 2003, annual primary production decreased by 221-278 g C m-2 year-1, with decreased rates continuing through 2010. Based on a conceptual model, oceanographic and meteorological variables were analyzed with production rates to determine if concurrent environmental changes were responsible for the reduced primary production in Massachusetts Bay. Results indicated that stronger influx of low salinity water from the western Maine Coastal Current (WMCC) in recent years might be responsible for the decreases. The WMCC appeared to have become fresher from increased river discharge in the western Gulf of Maine. Northeasterly winds in recent years promoted WMCC intrusion into Massachusetts Bay. Correlation between primary production and surface salinities suggested the impact of the WMCC on production rates. We hypothesized that increased stratification resulted in reduced vertical mixing and nutrient concentrations in surface waters for phytoplankton growth. However, no significant correlations were observed between the annual primary production and nutrient concentrations in Massachusetts Bay.     A young star-forming galaxy at z = 3.5 with an extended Ly\,α\alpha halo seen with MUSE

    Spatially resolved studies of high redshift galaxies, an essential insight into galaxy formation processes, have been mostly limited to stacking or unusually bright objects. We present here the study of a typical (L∗^{*}, M⋆_\star = 6 ×109\times 10^9 M⊙M_\odot) young lensed galaxy at z=3.5z=3.5, observed with MUSE, for which we obtain 2D resolved spatial information of Lyα\alpha and, for the first time, of CIII] emission. The exceptional signal-to-noise of the data reveals UV emission and absorption lines rarely seen at these redshifts, allowing us to derive important physical properties (Te∌_e\sim15600 K, ne∌_e\sim300 cm−3^{-3}, covering fraction fc∌0.4_c\sim0.4) using multiple diagnostics. Inferred stellar and gas-phase metallicities point towards a low metallicity object (Zstellar_{\mathrm{stellar}} = ∌\sim 0.07 Z⊙_\odot and ZISM_{\mathrm{ISM}} << 0.16 Z⊙_\odot). The Lyα\alpha emission extends over ∌\sim10 kpc across the galaxy and presents a very uniform spectral profile, showing only a small velocity shift which is unrelated to the intrinsic kinematics of the nebular emission. The Lyα\alpha extension is ∌\sim4 times larger than the continuum emission, and makes this object comparable to low-mass LAEs at low redshift, and more compact than the Lyman-break galaxies and Lyα\alpha emitters usually studied at high redshift. We model the Lyα\alpha line and surface brightness profile using a radiative transfer code in an expanding gas shell, finding that this model provides a good description of both observables.Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, accepted in MNRA

    Associations of dietary intake on biological markers of inflammation in children and adolescents: A systematic review

    Background: In children and adolescents, chronic low-grade inflammation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of co- and multi-morbid conditions to mental health disorders. Diet quality is a potential mechanism of action that can exacerbate or ameliorate low-grade inflammation; however, the exact way dietary intake can regulate the immune response in children and adolescents is still to be fully understood. Methods: Studies that measured dietary intake (patterns of diet, indices, food groups, nutrients) and any inflammatory biomarkers in children and adolescents aged 2 to19 years and published until November 2020 were included in this systematic review, and were selected in line with PRISMA guidelines through the following databases: Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, Global Health, Medline COMPLETE andWeb of Science-Core Collection. A total of 53 articles were identified. Results: Results show that adequate adherence to healthful dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet, or food groups such as vegetables and fruit, or macro/micro nutrients such as fibre or vitamin C and E, are associated with decreased levels of pro-inflammatory biomarkers, mainly c-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), whereas adherence to aWestern dietary pattern, as well as intake of food groups such as added sugars, macro-nutrients such as saturated fatty acids or ultra-processed foods, is associated with higher levels of the same pro-inflammatory biomarkers. Conclusions: This is the first systematic review examining dietary intake and biological markers of inflammation in both children and adolescents.
