The Representation of Nation in the Youth and History Survey in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A research project Youth and History: a comparative European survey on historical consciousness
and political attitudes among adolescents was carried out in 27 countries in 1995-96. About 30
000 adolescents answered to the same questions concerning their ideas, among others about
history, politics and history teaching.
Bosnia and Herzegovina did not participate in the research due to fact that there was a
war in the area.' The manipulative use of history has, however, been characteristic to that
society during the last ten years, and it was therefore considered worthwhile to include
Bosnia and Herzegovina into the Youth and History research later on.
Consequently, in the autumn 1999, I set out to collect the Youth and History data in
Bosnia and Herzegovina. Youth and History provided a suitable comparative method to
investigate empirically contents of historical consciousness and political attitudes in the postwar
situation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In the following I will analyse the representation of nation among the young Bosnians in
the Youth and History survey by first asking, "what is nation" (1.) based on the answers of
the pupils. Then I will continue to consider the duties and rights of nations (2.) and see
whether Youth and History results give us any hints about the historical and future significance
of nations in pupils' minds (3.). Before concluding the paper, I will end with a short
analysis of the associations that Bosnian pupils have between the concepts "Nation" and
"Europe" (4.)
(Ks.
Torsti 2008.) Tästä yksittäisestä historiapoliittisesta tapahtumasarjasta voidaan erottaa ainakin
seuraavat konkreettiset historiapolitiikan aiheuttamat seuraukset: pahimmat väkivaltaisuudet
Virossa koko 1991 alkaneen itsenäisyyden aikana, mittavat aineelliset vahingot Tallinnan keskustassa
ja Viron liike-elämän kärsimät tappiot muun muassa venäläisten asettamien ostoboikottien
vuoksi. Näiden lisäksi patsaskiista muutti ja typisti kesäkuussa 2007 järjestetyn EU–
Venäjä-huippukokouksen asialistaa. Tapahtuma toi myös esiin Viron venäläisvähemmistön sosiaaliset
ongelmat. (Torsti 2008, 33–34.)
Kuten Tallinnassa käyty patsaskiista osoittaa, historiaa koskevat tai historiaan liittyvät poliittiset
tulkinnat ja päätökset voivat johtaa konkreettisiin seurauksiin ja yhteiskuntapoliittisiin
merkityksenantoihin, mikä osaltaan selittää historiantutkijoiden, politiikan tutkijoiden ja didaktikkojen
kiinnostusta aihetta kohtaan (ks. esim. Hentilä 2004; Hentilä 2004b; Löfström
2004; Torsti 2003; Torsti 2008; Villaume 2008). Omassa tutkimus- ja opetustyössäni olen kuitenkin
usein törmännyt tarpeeseen selkeyttää historiapolitiikan käsitteistöä. Samalla tarvittaisiin
jonkinlaista tutkimuskehikkoa, jonka avulla tutkijat ja etenkin opinnäytteiden tekijät voisivat
jäsentää historiapoliittisia analyysejaan. Tässä kirjoituksessa esitän yhden mahdollisen tavan
hahmottaa historiapolitiikan eri ulottuvuuksia
History Culture and Banal Nationalism in post-War Bosnia
This article analyses post-war history culture in Bosnia and
Herzegovina using the concept of banal nationalism. Through a
description of Bosnia’s post-war history culture – that part of
public culture where people face the past in their daily lives, i.e.
books, films, monuments, museums, buildings, pictures,
photographs, plays and so forth – the article demonstrates the
division of Bosnian history culture into three variants and
analyzes the main characteristics of each variant.
The analysis shows that contrary to classical, more selfconscious
forms of historical presentation such as museum
exhibits, the past exists in post-war Bosnian society in a banal
way. The article concludes that such a banal presence of history
can have a strong impact on the identity and historical
consciousness of Bosnians
Segregated Education and Texts : a Challenge to Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The article addresses the post-war
education with special emphasis on
history education in Bosnia and
Herzegovina during the twelve
years before 2007. The focus is
on the efforts of the international
community. While there have been
numerous attempts to address the
segregation of education and to
change hatred-spreading history
textbooks, the results have been
modest. The inconvenient truth of
post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina
remains: segregation in education
and history teaching have continued
for a generation, causing many
problems for the development of a
multicultural society. The analysis
utUizes previous research and
debates on post-conflict education
and develops recommendations for
future post-conflict situations based
on the Bosnia case
Security Issue : History Teaching in Post-Conflict Societies
The challenge of teaching history is always present in societies emerging from violent conflicts — in particular civil
conflicts — or major societal changes. This article provides an overall analysis with a normative approach of the
central questions concerning history education in post-conflict situations. Based on her experience as a scholar and
project worker, Dr. Pilvi Torsti offers her conclusions as to the most important considerations when thinking about
history education in a post-conflict/conflict context
Youth and History in Contemporary Bosnia
In November and December 1999, I visited about 40 schools all over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim was to collect a sample in which the three groups were equally represented, as their separation is the present reality. Moreover, the inclusion of each group provided an additional analysis level within the Bosnian country sample. Thus, the sample can be characterised as an "intelligent convenience sample" using the terminology of the Youth and History research project of the mid-1990s (Magne Angvik and Bodo von Borries, eds., Youth and History: A Comparative European Survey on Historical Consciousness and Political Attitudes among Adolescents, 1997). Different sets of strata were also used, such as ethnic criteria, socio-historical and geographical criteria, in other words, the schools were chosen using the background information about the wartime events in the area and about the current social standing of the area. Thus, the sample would include as many socio-historical faces of Bosnia and Herzegovina as possible. For these reasons, the sample can also be characterised as a stratified sample. The portion of my study presented here focuses upon pupils' ideas regarding 'nations' and `national states,' and the table below reflects the types of questions that were asked. The first three items are definitions of nations while the other three deal with the role of a nation in the past and in the future. Such questions are more complicated in the Bosnian case since the pupils are likely not to think that a nation equals a state based on the reality of their home country. While some of the items conflict with one another, none clearly contradicts one another
Bosnialaisnuoret ja historia
Tutkimuksessani keskityin analysoimaan bosnialaisten nuorten
kansakuntaan seka sotaan ja rauhaan liittyvää ajattelua Nuoret ja historia
-tutkimuksen pohjalta. Tämän artikkelin tavoitteena on esitellä
bosnialaisten nuorten käsityksiä historiasta ja historianopetuksesta.
Onko menneisyydellä heille merkitystä? Miten viihdyttäviä erilaiset
kertomukset menneisyydestä nuorten mielestä ovat? Mihin tai kenen
kertomuksiin voi luottaa? Onko historianopiskelu tärkeää? Entä mitä
tapahtuu koulun historiantunneilla? Millainen historia nuoria kiinnostaa?
Tarkasteluotteeni on vertaileva: vertaan bosnialaisten nuorten
ajattelua muiden eurooppalaisten nuorten ajatteluun ja lisäksi tarkastelen
Bosnian kolmen kansanryhmän välillä olevia eroja ja yhtäläisyyksiä.
Pyrin myOs peilaamaan bosnialaisten nuorten ajatuksia
yhteiskunnassa vallitsevaan historiakulttuuriin ja historian oppikirjoihin,
joita olen analysoinut laajemmin toisaalla. Artikkelin taustaksi ja
ennen varsinaista analyysia esitellään lyhyesti Bosnian koululaitosta
tutkimuksessa
Historialliset avainsanat historiapolitiikan palveluksessa
Länsimainen kollektiivinen muisti toisesta
maailmansodasta rakentuu olennaisesti
sellaisten avainsanojen kuin juutalaisten
kansanmurha, keskitysleirit ja holokausti
ympärille. Miljoonien juutalaisen käsittämätön
kohtalo ja sen taustalla ollut suunnitelmallinen
inhimillinen julmuus koskettavat
yhä uusia sukupolvia niin historianopetuksen
kuin julkisen historiakulttuurin kautta.
Mainituille avainsanoille on rakentunut
voimakas merkitys. Sanoja ei juuri voi käyttää
viittaamatta saman tien koko kollektiiviseen
tietoisuuteen toisen maailmansodan
kaameuksista. Sanoilla on vahvasti tunnepohjainen
ja itsestään selvä sisältö, jota harvemmin
keskusteluissa määritellään tai puretaan
History Textbooks Supporting Enemy Images in Post-War Bosnia and Herzegovina
This study examines the national division of history teaching in Bosnia and Herzegovina in
the war and post-war period. The process of division of schooling into three curricula (Bosnian
Serb, Bosnian Croat, and Bosniak) is presented. Representations of other national groups are
central in 8th-grade history textbooks used by the three national communities. 'The others', the
members of other national groups of the country, are typically presented through enemy
images. This study discusses the strength and influence of hetero-stereotypes of history
textbooks and their consequences for reconciliation and reconstruction of a multicultural
society
