Promoting reminiscences with virtual reality headsets: A pilot study with people with dementia
This study aimed to explore the feasibility and effects of promoting reminiscences, using virtual reality (VR) headsets for viewing 360° videos with personal relevance, with people with dementia. A study with a mixed methods design was conducted with nine older adults diagnosed with dementia. Interventions consisted of four sessions, in which the participants’ engagement, psychological and behavioral symptoms, and simulation sickness symptoms were evaluated. Neuropsychiatric symptomatology and quality of life were measured pre- and post-intervention. Caregivers were interviewed regarding the effect of the approach. In most cases, participants appeared to enjoy the sessions, actively explored the 360° environment, and shared memories associated with the depicted locations, often spontaneously.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Still a Powerful Tool?
Background: New therapies with prognostic benefits have been recently introduced in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic power of current listing criteria for heart transplantation (HT) in an HFrEF cohort submitted to cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) between 2009 and 2014 (group A) and between 2015 and 2018 (group B). Methods: Consecutive patients with HFrEF who underwent CPET were followed-up for cardiac death and urgent HT. Results: CPET was performed in 487 patients. The composite endpoint occurred in 19.4% of group A vs. 7.4% of group B in a 36-month follow-up. Peak VO2 (pVO2) and VE/VCO2 slope were the strongest independent predictors of mortality. International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) thresholds of pVO2 ≤ 12 mL/kg/min (≤14 if intolerant to β-blockers) and VE/VCO2 slope > 35 presented a similar and lower Youden index, respectively, in group B compared to group A, and a lower positive predictive value. pVO2 ≤ 10 mL/kg/min and VE/VCO2 slope > 40 outperformed the traditional cut-offs. An ischemic etiology subanalysis showed similar results. Conclusion: ISHLT thresholds showed a lower overall prognostic effectiveness in a contemporary HFrEF population. SARS-CoV-2 introductions and early dynamics of the epidemic in Portugal
Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal was rapidly implemented by
the National Institute of Health in the early stages of the COVID-19 epidemic, in collaboration
with more than 50 laboratories distributed nationwide.
Methods By applying recent phylodynamic models that allow integration of individual-based
travel history, we reconstructed and characterized the spatio-temporal dynamics of SARSCoV-2 introductions and early dissemination in Portugal.
Results We detected at least 277 independent SARS-CoV-2 introductions, mostly from
European countries (namely the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland),
which were consistent with the countries with the highest connectivity with Portugal.
Although most introductions were estimated to have occurred during early March 2020, it is
likely that SARS-CoV-2 was silently circulating in Portugal throughout February, before the
first cases were confirmed.
Conclusions Here we conclude that the earlier implementation of measures could have
minimized the number of introductions and subsequent virus expansion in Portugal. This
study lays the foundation for genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal, and highlights the need for systematic and geographically-representative genomic surveillance.We gratefully acknowledge to Sara Hill and Nuno Faria (University of Oxford) and

IMPLANTAÇÃO E AVALIAÇÃO DO SISTEMA BACIA DE EVAPOTRANSPIRAÇÃO (BET) PARA O TRATAMENTO DO ESGOTO DOMÉSTICO NO MEIO RURAL: O CASO DA COMUNIDADE TERAPÊUTICA REDENÇÃO NO MUNICÍPIO DE CAMPO MOURÃO - PR
O déficit relacionado ao saneamento básico no meio rural é um agravante no Brasil, em especial, para a coleta e o tratamento do esgoto doméstico, onde os sistemas são arcaicos, conhecidas como fossas negras, contaminando o lençol freático, lagos, nascentes e rios. Observando esta realidade, o objetivo deste trabalho pautou-se em implantar um sistema ecológico para a coleta e o tratamento do esgoto doméstico produzido em uma comunidade rural no município de Campo Mourão. Foram implantados dois sistemas na Comunidade Terapêutica Redenção (CTR), para atender 30 pessoas diariamente e visitantes nos fins de semana. O primeiro foi instalado para tratar águas negras provenientes dos banheiros e o segundo para tratamento de águas cinzas provenientes da cozinha e lavanderia. Para averiguar a eficiência do sistema em relação a remoção de patógenos nos efluentes produzidos foram selecionados os parâmetros físico-químicos: demanda química de oxigênio (DQO), demanda bioquímica de oxigênio (DBO), pH e turbidez. A eficiência de remoção da DBO e DQO foi calculada a partir da diferença dos valores médios obtidos entre as amostras do tanque séptico e sistema BET. A demanda bioquímica de oxigênio (DBO) apresentou eficiência de 86,64%, para demanda química de oxigênio (DQO), com desempenho de 90,29%, a turbidez apresentou eficiência de 88,2% e o pH ficou estável dentro da faixa 6 e 8
Age Differences in Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing Parameters in Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction
Background and Objectives: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a cornerstone of risk stratification in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, there is a paucity of evidence on its predictive power in older patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic power of current heart transplantation (HTx) listing criteria in HFrEF stratified according to age groups. Materials and Methods: Consecutive patients with HFrEF undergoing CPET between 2009 and 2018 were followed-up for cardiac death and urgent HTx. Results: CPET was performed in 458 patients with HFrEF. The composite endpoint occurred in 16.8% of patients ≤50 years vs. 14.1% of patients ≥50 years in a 36-month follow-up. Peak VO2 (pVO2), VE/VCO2 slope and percentage of predicted pVO2 were strong independent predictors of outcomes. The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation thresholds of pVO2 ≤ 12 mL/kg/min (≤14 if intolerant to β-blockers), VE/VCO2 slope > 35 and percentage of predicted pVO2 ≤ 50% presented a higher overall diagnostic effectiveness in younger patients (≤50 years). Specific thresholds for each age subgroup outperformed the traditional cut-offs. Conclusions: Personalized age-specific thresholds may contribute to an accurate risk stratification in HFrEF. Further studies are needed to address the gap in evidence between younger and older patients
Sacubitril/Valsartan Improves Left Atrial and Ventricular Strain and Strain Rate in Patients with Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction
Background: Data on the impact of sacubitril/valsartan (SV) therapy on phasic left atrial (LA) and left ventricular (LV) strain in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) are limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in two-dimensional speckle tracking (2D-STE) parameters with SV therapy in HFrEF patients. Methods: Prospective evaluation of HFrEF patients receiving optimized medical therapy. Two-dimensional speckle tracking (2D-STE) parameters were assessed at baseline and after 6 months of SV therapy. LA strain and strain rate (SR) in reservoir, conduit, and contraction phases were compared with LV longitudinal, radial, and circumferential strain and SR and stratified according to heart rhythm and HFrEF etiology. Results: A total of 35 patients completed the 6-month follow-up, with a mean age of 59 ± 11 years, 40% in atrial fibrillation, 43% with ischemic etiology, and LVEF of 29 ± 6%. There were significant improvements in LA reservoir, conduit, and contractile strain and SR following SV therapy, particularly among patients in sinus rhythm. There were significant improvements in longitudinal, radial, and circumferential LV function indices. Conclusion: SV therapy in HFrEF was associated with improved longitudinal, radial, and circumferential function, particularly among patients in sinus rhythm. These findings can provide insights into the mechanisms underlying the improvement of cardiac function and help assess subclinical responses to the treatment
Evaluation of beer deterioration by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/multivariate analysis: a rapid tool for assessing beer composition
Beer stability is a major concern for the brewing industry, as beer characteristics may be subject to significant
changes during storage. This paper describes a novel non-targeted methodology for monitoring the
chemical changes occurring in a lager beer exposed to accelerated aging (induced by thermal treatment:
18 days at 45 ◦C), using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry in tandem with multivariate analysis
(GC–MS/MVA). Optimization of the chromatographic run was performed, achieving a threefold reduction
of the chromatographic time. Although losing optimum resolution, rapid GC runs showed similar
chromatographic profiles and semi-quantitative ability to characterize volatile compounds. To evaluate
the variations on the global volatile signature (chromatographic profile and m/z pattern of fragmentation
in each scan) of beer during thermal deterioration, a non-supervised multivariate analysis method,
Principal Component Analysis (PCA), was applied to the GC–MS data. This methodology allowed not only
the rapid identification of the degree of deterioration affecting beer, but also the identification of specific
compounds of relevance to the thermal deterioration process of beer, both well established markers such
as 5-hydroxymethylfufural (5-HMF), furfural and diethyl succinate, as well as other compounds, to our
